Spin-off: American and Australian/New Zealander culture thread.

Sorry Buzz but whilst soccer / football is the world’s game, it’s dwarfed here in Australia by NRL (Australian rugby league), AFL (Australian Rules football) and cricket. At present Australia is over in England playing cricket and our football season is in full swing. Our first grade soccer comp plays in our soccer months whilst local comps play in winter alongside football.

NSW and Queensland as well as Victoria to a lesser degree are NRL dominated states. Victoria, WA, SA then QLD & NSW to a lesser degree are more AFL dominated. NT and TAS are still aimed more towards AFL.

If you asked a large percentage of Aussies about the Matildas they could probably name Sam Kerr but not many more. The Socceroos I personally (52yo female) couldn’t name any. However we are a massive sporting nation so when there is an Australian team playing whatever there will be a bit of press coverage and national pride.

We are fortunate to travel to the US at present almost monthly plus we have a family member living in Tennessee so we get our fill of questions and information first hand from friends in our chosen sporting team. We just had a great chat last week about the massive differences in Federal governments / Bureaucracy / voting policies etc between Australia and the US.

Weather today in mid-coast NSW is gorgeously sunny, little to no wind and reaching a top of 69’F however it currently feels more like late 50’s early 60’s. Massive change to our temperates in Ohio last week which were around the 80’F.
Thanks for the information and welcome to the thread. 😃

Thanks for providing this extra context on sports in Australia. Since I'm really not into it, I'd kind of forgotten about the footy and cricket too 😂

As the other PP mentioned, the US is not really that mysterious to Aussies, particularly the ones on this forum who tend to have American friends and travel there semi-regularly. But I know where to come if I think of a burning question!

It doesn't have to be a serious question, just topics that keep the thread going.

Ok here’s two for you:-

1. whenever I happen to watch reality type shows (very rarely) or YouTube videos I’m always amazed to see families use paper / plastic plates for meals instead of proper crockery. I’m talking about meals inside the home - is this a thing or just happens on certain shows?

Definitely not a thing over here - disposable items are relegated to outdoor / picnic / party type occasions.

2. why the heck don’t the majority of homes in the US have outdoor clotheslines? Even driving through rural type areas in Ohio last month I was amazed that lots of the properties didn’t have any outdoor clotheslines. Here in Australia the only homes that don’t have one would be in an apartment.

We (my family) only really use paper plates and disposable utensils for parties, not for everyday use.

Most people have dryers instead of air drying clothes outside these days. I'd be too afraid of bugs, myself. My grandmothers both had clotheslines, but they've largely fallen out of use.

1. It depends on circumstances. If the dishwasher out or someone doesn't want to clean dishes, disposables are a cheap effective option.

2. Washers and dryers are standard in most homes. Some people will dry using a clothesline but if you can afford the electricity, you will do it the modern way. It's just part of the culture here.

Anyone familiar with the Tindal/Katherine area in Australia? It looks like I might be going there for work next year sometime.

Any questions for today?

Also, just an FYI, Australia's Socceroos are playing Mexico in Texas this week.

Will any Aussie Disboarders be tuning in? ⚽🏟️:-):happytv:🇦🇺🇲🇽
Sorry, I won't be... If it's on it will probably be some ridiculous time of night! Seems like you're a big soccer fan 😝

Lucky you! My parents have just been around the top end in their caravan and loved the Katherine area! I can probably get more information from them if you've got anything specific you want to know?

I believe it's on at 12pm Australian time to the best of my knowledge. My 10 other soccer threads weren't a big clue on my passion for the sport? 🤣 I actually post about a variety of national teams on my threads during FIFA International Breaks (this week and next week being this month, with another in October and November). I just like to inform everyone about their national team if they are not already in the know. I hope all people around the globe will one day appreciate the sport as much as I do, even if it's only their national team.

Does Australia have a national tourism website?

Oh, I haven't checked your other threads so no, didn't get any clues 🤣

There is an Australia tourism website: https://www.australia.com/en
