Spin-off: American and Australian/New Zealander culture thread.

Excuse me, SOCCEROOS?! What a name!

I've never heard it before which, as a kiwi who lived in Australia, points to how unpopular football is compared to league, union, AFL and cricket - as others have said!

I won't be taking any follow up questions, I have zero interest in sports.

A NZ Kiwi you say? Your national team are known as the All Whites(because of their white uniforms)/Oma/Ferns.

Just an FYI, they are playing Greece on November 17th and the Republic of Ireland on November 21st.

Welcome to the thread regardless. I would love to hear questions about NZ and if you have any about the USA. How's the weather in NZ?

The Aussie women's team is known as the Matildas as others have said before.

I do know the All Whites (All Blacks, All Whites, it tracks doesn't it!), and the Matilda's - all the press coverage of the Women's World Cup in the paper!

I left NZ in 2016, right now I live in London (UK). The weather here is cold and grey, unsurprisingly. ;)

I just found this thread. I come from Tasmania which is the small island at the bottom of Australia, it is the island that Disney Wonder is now sailing to. One interesting fact that may interest Americans, we have platypus in our local creek - but they are not blue like Perry the Platypus 😀, we are also home to the Tassie Devil.
my question for Americans which is more popular in America, Survivor or Amazing Race? I love both.

Both shows have a big following here in the USA. I'm a bigger Amazing Race fan to be honest.

Where are the best places for Americans to visit in Australia in your opinion?

It's a massive diverse country with a LOT to see and do that is all very far away from each other (not unlike the US). So the short answer is it depends on what you're interested in.

The slightly longer answer, on the assumption that most international visitors to Australia want to tick off the major iconic features:
  • Fly into Sydney, you can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, iconic Sydney beaches and take a cruise on the harbour. Maybe Blue Mountains if there's time.
  • Fly up to Cairns and take a cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef and drive up to the Daintree Rainforest.
Depending on your preferences, I would then suggest any combination of:
  • Uluru/Alice Springs if you're interested in the Australian outback and Aboriginal culture.
  • Melbourne if you're interested in food/coffee/bar culture and/or sport. Or if you're keen to drive the Great Ocean Road.
  • Tasmania for something a bit different if you're interested in scenery/wildlife, hiking and/or historical convict-built estates.
Most of these places are very far away from each other and will take several hours to fly between (except Sydney and Hobart are both about an hour's flight from Melbourne).
