This is a transportation question, not going to WDW but I figure someone witll have the answer. My son will be running in the USATF Jr Olympic Cross Country National race in Myrtle Beach, SC. I want to be able to pack just a carry on with our clothes etc. He will be needing his running/race shoes which to those who are not familiar with this type of competitive running is a shoe with holes on the botom where the runner would put a spike which is a small piece of metal (spike) that is pointed. They are about 1/4 inch long I don't think he will need longer than that for the terrain he is running on. If he were to take all the spikes he wns, the longes would be 5/8 inch. Are these items allowed in a carry on? I am not packing much- our room has a washer dryer so no need to go overboard on the packing and it is just the two of us so no need for a lot of luggage. So do you think we would be ok to take them in a carry on with out having them taken at security. they would not be in the shoes but in either baggies or plastic containers.

Have never heard that spikes are a problem with TSA. Flew with 24 XC runners this fall and none were questioned in any way about it. Didn't hear any other teams that flew in for the meet had any problems either. Most of the athletes leave spikes out of the shoes except to race so what they took through security was the shoes + a bag of different sized spikes.

Am sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know, but make sure you take the longer spikes along just in case. The team I was with was running a very flat sandy course which normally would race w/o any spikes. But 6 inches of rain turned the course into a bog and most of them used the longest spikes they had. For some it was the first time they'd gone that long.

Good luck!

Thanks PlutoPony and others. We ran at a meet after a heavy ran where the trails were completely mud he wore the longest spikes he had that day! We had a lot of rain this year either on meet day or the n ight before usually 1/4 inch is all that he has had to use but this year he was using the longer ones because of terrain and mud! I'll just pack the spikes and go with a carry one so much easier that way!
