We were all set to purchase points at GCV in mid June. The price seemed too good to pass up and having just stayed at GCH last October we knew we would really enjoy it! We decided to watch incentive rumors and try to hold out until our September cruise to purchase to hopefully get a little bonus like onboard credit along with the good price. Well...we blew the money! No GCV unless we buy resale in a few years or something.

But we are happy with what what we purchased instead. We bought a cabin on a lake in central Wisconsin. We can certainly use it much more often than DVC points, (and we already have 400DVC points so we could always try to exchange for GCV.)

If you love the place, it will definitely be worth it! Enjoy all your lake time with your family. We have a "cabin" on a river in north central Minnesota (about an hour away from home) and it was fabulous while the kids were growing up and we could spend virtually every weekend there. Now, it seems like we HAVE to go to WDW and use our DVC points every once in a while for a large family gathering because they/we are all too busy to spend any time there! So you will find there is value to having both of your "homes away from home." Congratulations!:goodvibes

Congratulations on your purchase! We bought our Cape May home before buying into DVC and it's been well used for many many family gatherings. Some of our family prefer it to WDW, and all of us like something about the Jersey shore!!!

Bobbi:goodvibes

PS. Today we're using our "add on at BLT" money for a heat pump for our Ohio house. That's a bummer, and there won't be any DVC add ons for us this year.

OP - Congrats on the purchase of your cabin! I wish you many happy memories there! :thumbsup2

Bobbi - I am sorry to hear about your heat pump. Those things are never fun to deal with. Good luck getting everything fixed. Maybe the incentives will be better next year anyway! :goodvibes

Good for you! I'm sure your family will get great enjoyment from the cabin. Let the dreaming and decorating begin!

Congratulations!! :yay::yay::yay:

We bought our northern lake cabin years before our DVC purchase (which was just this spring) and we absolutely love it! Every year we find ways to spend more and more time there:) You won't regret it, and will enjoy having the best of both worlds! :goodvibes

Hi dr&momto2boys,
Congratulations on your purchase. I think that sounds like a great way to spend the money especially since you already have DVC points.

The good news is GCV is going to be around for a long time so you still have time to buy points in the future. Sounds like you really have the best of both worlds. Enjoy the new family memories the cabin will create. :woohoo:

Having grown up in MN, I am jealous of all you midwesterners and your cabins. There is nothing better than a lake in the summertime. As DH and I age, we are looking into trailers and becoming seasonal campers at Calumet, the NE synod camp for Lutherans, but we're 8th on the list.:confused3 We may have to settle for a season or two at Danforth Bay.

Congratulations on your cabin!:woohoo:

Amen. Given the choice between DVC and a lake house, I would choose a lake house. Too expensive though.....:sad2:

We just returned to NJ today after 7 weeks (we're teachers) at our cottage in the Finger Lakes region of NY. Our boys are 7, 4 and 4 so we have a few years on your kids but here's what they were up to just a few days ago.

This is DH flipping DS7 for the 10th time.

We've been back for 6 hours and I'm already missing it!

You have so much memory making ahead of you! Congratulations!

7 Weeks? Oh, I'm jealous. While we use our 'ranch house' nearly every weekend the longest single stay in 3.5 years of ownership has been 4 nights. Most visits are just 2 nights ... and it drives me nuts to leave. I'm dreaming of someday taking a full week just staying at our own place. :cloud9:

Thanks for sharing the photos!

While waiting for the VGC Founding member period to be announced, we purchased a cabin in Lake Tahoe. The deal was too good to pass up, but since we decided that it will be a rental for the next year or two, we decided to move forward with the VGC add on as well. So, we'll get our Disney fix now, then look forward to Tahoe and hopefully Hawaii in the future! Love knowing we have lower cost vacation opportunities in the future!

Seriously though...I work at a boarding school and live with 33 ninth and tenth grade boys for 10 months of the year in order to be able to have my summers. Believe me, it's no easy task.

Well deserved -- thanks for your patience, care and hard work!

Completely jealous of your Tahoe cabin!! This summer we've spent many weekends up there and are contemplating our own purchase of a cabin.

Congrats on the purchase...I live in the Wausau (WI) area and work in Stevens Point, can I ask what lake your cottage is on?
No, I'm not a stalker :scared1:...just curious. Enjoy your time "up north!"
