Dh has received a ticket (dated 4 June). He can opt for a fixed penalty, but has to send the payment, together with his driving licence, within 28 days.

We are due to fly to Orlando on 5 July. Does anyone know how quickly the licence is likely to be returned?

I would phone the DVLA Deb - see if you can pay extra for record/special delivery :)

tickets are admin. by your local magistrates court with the fixed penalty ticket office of the local police..its nothing to do with dvla. suggest you ring the number or contact the police address/mag clerks office on rear of ticket and see if you can take it straight in

I'm only guessing here but, regardless of who actually takes the fine (police / mags court/ other), surely the licence has to go to the DVLA at some point to have the penalty points amended.

I have a friend who works for the DVLA, so I've left a message asking her if she knows the answer, and I'll let you know if she calls back.

Hiya Deb!

I had exactly the same problem in November of last year!

I filled in and returned the form and then had the letter about paying the fine within 28 days. I was due to be in Orlando in December and taking into account the Christmas post thought it unlikely that my licence would be back in time.

I wrote them a letter asking for a 'stay of execution' giving them my dates and explaining the situation. They sent a letter back almost immediately saying that I didn't have to send my licence or the fine until the end of December.

Be honest with them and I'm sure you won't have any problem.

When I sent my license a couple of months ago to have points added for speeding I had it back within a week. It was really fast. The court dealing with it all put the points on handwritten - it didn't go to DVLA.
I'm pretty sure that you can pay Speeding fines in person at the court before the 28 days are up - and have the points put on by the Clerk of the Court there and then - but maybe that's just in Scotland - I vaguely remember doing this about 10 years ago (honest I don't speed that much - this is my only two offences for speeding!!! ;) )

I have just spoken to my friend in the DVLA and she's confirmed what's been said - the licence doesn't go to them at all; the endorsement is added by hand wherever the fine is sent.

As this is something you're obliged to produce on demand, I would think there must be a pretty quick turn-around in getting the licence back to you a.s.a.p.

Fingers crossed you manage to get it all sorted out quickly.

Your best bet, if you don't want to trust the Royal Mail (stop laughing...) is to go to your main Post Office in your area and get an INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT.
They cost £4, are valid for 12 months and act as a driving licence in the US.
You will need to take along your current driving licence (hope you haven't sent it away yet), your passport and a passport size photo. Just fill in the required parts on the small application form and the counter staff will do the rest.

Hope this helps.
