DH and I are doing a couples only trip next month. I made an adr for the princess dinner soley for the food.We ate at Akershus years ago when they first made it a princess meal. DH is european and this is one of his favorite meals. The menu description on allears is kind of generic, I want to make sure they haven't "Americanized" it. Also, is there a way we can ask that the characters NOT stop at our table?

I only ate at Akershus for the first time two years ago and I thought the food was very bland. We went for the princesses and atmosphere and really enjoyed it. I would never recommend it on the basis of the food alone though.

Oh no! Glad I asked. When we went there were lots of cold sliced fish selections, Scandanavian cheeses, etc. We definitely are not going for the princesses. I may have to cancel. Thank you for your input .DH will be disappointed though.

I was there last week.

They have a cold bar, and you order an entree through the server. The cold bar definitely had some cold fish, salmon, I think. There was the brown Norwegian cheese I've heard about on here that was mild and creamy. There were other options on the bar like tuna salad that definitely wasn't your usual American tuna - it had a briny flavor that I loved, DH not so much.

DH and I both had the meatballs - 3 large meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy and ligionberry sauce. The ligionberry sauce was not as sweet as what I'm used to at Ikea. :) But we both very much enjoyed the entree.

It was first visit, and I was pleasantly surprised. Have you checked other reviews like at allears.net?

If you don't want the characters, let the server know.

Thank you. Do you remember if the cold appetizer options included more than one fish or cheese? I don't remember ordering an entree at all when we went several years ago, just a buffet.

We went in December and there were quite a few cheese selections. Not sure about the fish, but there were cold meats too. There were also cold pastas and more. I felt there was a good selection. You can check Allears menus to get an idea of what the main meal choices would be. As for the princesses, I saw quite a few couples who continued to eat, and just nodded at the princesses, who continued to the next table.

The cold bar is apparently not nearly the variety they had before they went princess, as the restaurant is no longer a full buffet. But it is still there. I haven't been there in years but they still have brown goat cheese according to reports.

The entrees have been Americanized for the most part.

You can alert your server that you do not want the characters to stop by your table. However, if all the characters don't get the word, they'll probably assume than anyone who eats there wants to see them as this restaurant is all about the princess greetings now. Most of them are pretty good at reading non-verbal cues though.

There were other cheeses for sure, but they were ones I was familiar with, but they definitely weren't run of the mill grocery store cheeses or anything. I don't do most cold fish options, so I only remember seeing salmon. There were other seafood salads other than the aforementioned tuna. There was a very good shrimp salad, too. Not saying the foods hasn't been Americanized, but they were definitely not fully changed!

If you are looking for something more like the old buffet, I'm sure it's changed. I wasn't interested in eating there until they changed the menu. I'm well traveled and like to try new things, but the old menu didn't appeal to me.

We found the quality of the entrees at dinner to be on par with tgi fridays. It was not good at all. I had the salmon. I can't speak to the buffet because the night we were there we had a table right next to it and we witnessed a little girl suck her hand and then run her hands along the clean plate stack...And then along all the buffet. I was super grossed out and we didnt eat the buffet. The particular night we were there was so loud, kids running everywhere. It is a character meal and the tables are close together so it can get really crazy in there. We said never again for dinner. We did do breakfast on 2/25, had an 8:05 res. It was great! We were the first table seated and were the first to hit the buffet. We had smoked salmon, bagels with dill and lingonberry cream cheese, loads of fresh fruit and yogurt. They had the brown cheese and cold cuts i believe. Then they serve a dish of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and AMAZING cheesy potatoes to your table. We really enjoyed breakfast but would only go if we got the first seating again. This is not a restaurant I would recommend to two adults just for the food, because it is a princess meal and 95% of people have small children and it can get very rowdy.

. . . DH is european and this is one of his favorite meals . . . want to make sure they haven't "Americanized" it . . . ask that the characters NOT stop at our table?

1) Hubby will be severely disappointed.
2) The Scandinavian dishes are few.
3) Everything is now Americanized
. . . they started Princesses for more income
. . . to get people to see princesses, they changed the food
. . . folks who want princesses don't like adventurous eating
4) As for princesses, yes, you can request they don't stop.

Thanks everyone . I guess I'll just show him this thread and let him decide. He is not picky at all but really enjoys more unusual foods like ox tail, escargot and tripe. As far as cheeses go, the stinkier the better.

I agree - there's nothing really adventurous there, but that doesn't mean it's poop, either. I disagree that it's like a subpar casual dining restaurant. I personally like to eat when I go to Ikea, and it was better than that, but that's the best comparison I can give you. ;)

Just because someone is seeking a meal with princesses doesn't mean they aren't adventurous eaters, either. :)

Did you check the menu at Monsieur Paul over in France? They've recently updated that restaurant and it's menu. It may be more to your DH's liking.

I have the opposite problem. My MIL is concerned the food won't be Americanized ENOUGH.

For someone quite picky, will there be anything to eat on the cold bar?
