Special "beer" report

I'll let DH know about this for our next trip - he'll be in 7th heaven!! He's become quite the beer snob - thanks for the info!

BTW we name all of our pets after beers:
Border collie - "Dundee" (Honey Brown)
Pug - "Shabadoo" (a local black & tan - her colors!!)
Cat - "Taddy" Porter
Cat - "Drayman"'s Porter
Bird - "Boomer" for Shnortzenboomer (SW Colorado)

The kids totally crack up when we're in a restaurant and DH orders one of our pets! They definitely make for some unique names. I'll have to check the first post again - there was a name that caught my eye for a future pet!

Bearvet,

My heart skipped a beat when I read your post. You must live close to me. You mentioned some of my favorite beers and we almost named our puppy Porter.

Have you found the BBC Kentucky Porter? Tried the Octoberfest? Made an ice cream float with Drayman's Porter?

I'f I'm off on a unreated thread tangent, send a PM.

They were out of Tusker the nite we dined!! Casa is a pretty mainstream Lager--

As an aside, Raglan Road had a couple of beer "samplers" much as you might find in a brew pub--I got one that included Boddingtons Cream Ale, Stella Artois, Smithwicks, and Tucher Weizen.
The Brown Derby also had some good selections-that already noted Weizen, plus Kirin and Amber Bock on draft. And Le Fin du Monde in bottles!!

Boddi's and Smithwicks on the same sampler!!! Please don't tease me like that!!! I used to work in a British pub here in Houston and we had both on tap. Could do without the "Belgian Budweiser" as we used to call Stella Artois and not much of a wheat beer fan unless of course it's Abita Purple Haze or some other Frambois. Well, DH likes those so he can have them.

Can't remember who was talking about Porter floats but we have an ice cream parlor here that makes Guiness ice cream. Talk about yummy!! In fact, I wonder how late she stays open...:drinking1

I 'm not a big fan of Stella either. Funny--not too long ago I hardly ever saw it. Now, it's almost everywhere. Successful marketing, for sure.
Ever have a Marzen?? DH would probably like that style. Can't find any place that has one..

I don't think I've evr had a Marzen. DH has a tendency to go for those light fizzy, Belgians. I can do a Duvel or a Chimay everyonce in a while but I worked in a micro brew pub for 3 1/2 years so I got really spoiled. I'm slowly bringing DH over to the Dark side though. He steals my Guiness draft cans when I'm at work.

I think one of the reasons Stella has become so popular so quickly is the fact that it tastes just like Bud, but the alcohol content is higher. So all the suburban yuppies can say they like European beers without really liking European beer. There is also the snob factor involved as well. They can order an import and look all sophisticated.

I know I'll get blasted for that comment but the pub I was working at catered to a lot of yuppies and I used to call them all wimps when they came in with their power suits and ordered a pint of Stella. I'd tell them to drink a real beer or Bud, it was cheaper. I usually got tipped very well though. Oh well, blond hair and big "you knows" still go pretty far in the way of a bar maid. :)

Poly has excellent beer from Hawaii!! It's from Kona Brewing. I tried the Fire Rock Pale Ale and it was awesome!!

I brew my own beer at home - I usually base my recipes on the recipe for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and I've won brewing contests with some of my beers. :thumbsup2

Big River Brewing over on the Boardwalk has excellent beers!! We didn't make it there this trip, but I've been there several times in the past and they do a really good job with their beers! :drinking1

Many Oktoberfest brews are Marzens. Marzen refers to the month of March which is when true Oktoberfests are brewed. They are then conditioned until mid September.

My fellow homebrewer Tiki Room Fan may be able to verify this bit of beer trivia.

Yes Bunsen...I agree w/you on Marzen's. Marzen's are cold-fermented lagers that are very malty and copper or red in color. I'm not typically a fan of Marzen's because I like my beer bitter and extremely hoppy. I'm not into the sweetness of a malty beer too much. I do love smoke beers, though. And, Sam Adams makes a great Scotch Ale if you get it fresh on tap in Boston.

Do you brew much, Bunsen? I don't as often as I'd like to and as often as I used to. We are currently enjoying my "Crime Scene Pale Ale" - that turned out pretty well. :)

I'm just the opposite--I like beers less hopped and bitter!!
Thankfully there's plenty to choose from either way.
Degrones (a microbrewery in Baltimore, now out of business) had an excellent Marzen. I could even get it on draft at several local spots.
But no more.

My tastes lean towards the hoppy also, but I can't resist tasting as many Oktoberfests as possible when they're in season. You must have tried the Dogfish 60 IPA. It's wonderfully hoppy, but very smooth.

We brew about 4 times a year. We just started drinking a Honey Porter. Great for these cooler months. We'll make a new batch of something for 'the holidays'. Happy Brewing to You! :teeth:

Perhaps we should start a homebrewing thread to compare recipies, tastes, and techniques.
