I'm still up here in the mountains at the lake - where I believe it's hunting season right now..

Earlier I heard gun shots a bit up the road (densely wooded area), but they just didn't sound right to me - as in someone hunting.. It was a rapid firing of 6 or more shots, one right after another - a pause of probably 30 seconds or so - and then around 8 more rapid shots.. Nothing after that..

Is a hunting rifle capable of firing that many shots so quickly? Tried to call DD's FIL to ask him, but - he's out hunting! LOL..:rotfl:

As fast as you can pull the trigger, It'll go bang.
( not including bolt action )

A typical semi-automatic hunting rifle can fire as quickly as you can pull the trigger. Obviously not 10 or 20 rounds per second, but one per second could easily happen.

It's probably someone plunking with a .22 caliber rifle, since ammunition is so expensive now.

plunking/plinking

the sound a metal coffee will make getting hit by a small bullet
Plink, plink, plink

Thanks.. You would think I'd know this stuff - my late father was a hunter - but obviously I am woefully uninformed..:rotfl:

More likely the second set of shots was the kill. Wounded with the first burst and finished off with the second.

I live in the mountains of NH and am always aware of when hunting season is. Even if I didn't participate there are safety issues like wearing orange when out walking that should be observed.

LOL my DH, FIL, and both sons are hunters, as are most of my friend's husbands and a few of my girlfriends. DS7 will go out on his first hunt this weekend UGHH!! I am totally clueless about all of it.. you would think that I would know something since I am surrounded by it all the time.

I plan on taking the hunter's safety course next year and start going with the boys.

Plinking is a less formal, but often more enjoyable form of target shooting that usually involves shooting a cans.

Multiple, rapid fire shooting can sometimes be encountered in hunting, but is not considered good hunting. It's one of the reasons I lost interest in hunting.

If it takes that many shots for a kill, then it ain't a real hunter.

One shot is all you need.

Sounds like a frustrated hunter popping off his ammo prior to leaving, rather than unloading.
