Disney has officially announced that WDW's Space Mountain will close on Sunday April 19th (one week after Easter) for major rehab and is expected to reopen in "Late 2009". Nothing else has been stated.

Yeehaawwww, looks like we will get to ride it one more time on our March trip.

Thanks for the update.

WOOOOHOOOO!!! I am thirlled to hear this! I know it probably won't be re-opened for my trip in late September/early October, but that's ok. I'm hoping that when it does re-open, it will be a much improved ride. Right now, it's so jerky and breaks down so often that I avoid going on it.

Woohoo, now we can stop calling it a rumor. Really, that had gotten so annoying I was about to cold turkey this place.

Do we know how extensive the rehab is going to be? Is anything being completely changed ?? (track layout? trains?)

I like the ride the way it is. It really feels like you are riding a rocket. Changing it over to a two seater roller coaster type is going to ruin it in my opinion. The classic feel, (which is outdated I know) is something that makes the ride great, just the way it is. I will certainly miss it the old way.

Yeah! I'm so glad it's after my February trip as I've never been brave enough to go on it! I'm going to make myself this time because I know it'll be completely different next time! My DD5 is excited about it now too!
It's funny, I was just talking to them about it yesterday and how it's been rumored that it'll be refurbished but I was hoping it would be after our trip!

I don't see it posted on the website or anything yet. Where did you see this Cheshire?

:worship: :worship: yea yea!!
we will get to ride it !!!!!!!

thank you Disney for not closing it in February :wizard:

well, I have mixed feelings on that one...we thought it was terribly jerky & not dark enough when we rode it in Sept. 2008...felt it really did need a major refurb, and vowed we wouldn't ride it again until they worked on it. So bravo for that.:thumbsup2

But, In September, we'll be taking DS, 28, who hasn't been to WDW in 10 years, and his friend who has never been...too bad they'll have to miss out completely on it. Don't suppose they'll be done if "late 2009" is the estimated finish time.

:cool1: We, too will be able to ride it one more time and hopefully my 7 year old will try it this time:thumbsup2

Hmm... any guesses on when Late 2009 is? I'm crossing my fingers it will be back up by our trip in late November! :)

Thanks for the update. It sounded like it was inevitable.

Also, I can't seem to find it officially posted anywhere. Do you have a link?

I have only rode this ride once and that was 13 years ago. What is it like? If I remember right, the riders are in a row. My DS's are both tall enough to ride this ride, so I am sure that they will want to try it out. We will be there the week before it closes down. I would like them to get to experience it, espically if it is going to be completely different when it starts up again.
