Space Mountain - Not for tall people

So we're having a blast at out first trip at DL. The biggest downside is that I couldn't ride SM because I'm too tall! I'm 6'8", and there was just no room to cram my legs under the lap bar to ride; the cars just aren't long enough. Actually ended up with a few bruises from trying (was worth the extra effort).

Just thought I'd share, being tall at theme parks can be rough!

My husband is 6'5" and in order to sit down in the Space Mountain car, he has to rock back and forth and wedge himself in. Screamin' is also a really close call for him - he can sit, but his knees are crammed against the front. Despite the tight fit, I hope you continue to have a great trip!

Not fitting on a few rides here and there is the norm for me. If Screamin' is about the same as SM as far as car size goes, I no longer have to be bummed about it being closed this week!

This may be an ignorant suggestion, but could you ride alone, and sort of sit sideways, so that the bulk of your legs are in the other side of the car?
(I'm exactly five feet tall, so I know not what I speak of.) ;)

The cars in Space Mountain have two separate seats and two separate lap bars - it's not a bench seat as on Big Thunder Mountain, for example. While I haven't personally seen anyone do this (or be told they can't do it), I can't imagine that Disneyland would permit guests to sit improperly in a ride vehicle. If anything were to happen - for example, having to apply the brakes suddenly, a guest not seated properly could be injured. For that reason I'm pretty sure if you can't sit upright in the seat then you wouldn't be able to ride.

My DH is 6'4" and it was entertaining watching him cram into the seat on Goofy's Sky School. The Astro Orbiter is another fun one.

When he sits on any lap bar ride with DS (5) I make him hold on to DS because the lap bar is up so high to accommodate DH that DS could stand right up and walk out. :scared1:

Sometimes being tall does have its draw backs. People don't make things for people over 6 ft. Unlike weight, there is nothing to be done about being tall.

I can tell you from experience that the answer to that question is "No."

I'm not exactly tall (5'8"), but I have really long legs for my height. I was riding alone and had one leg bowed out so it was basically in the other seat's area. They stopped, lifted up the lap bar, and made me pull my other leg into the proper compartment before they'd start the ride.

I do fit with both legs in front of me, but it's a bit tighter than I consider comfortable. And, if it's a tight fit for me, with a 33-inch inseam, I can't imagine how anyone with longer legs can fit comfortably!

Yah, but studies show tall people make more money than shorter people. So it is all tradeoff.

My husband is 6'5", but most of his height is in his torso. Not too many issues at DL (Matterhorn - hasn't tried Astro Orbiter since he was a kid). Screamin' can give him issues because of the shoulder restraint, but nowhere near as bad as most other amusement parks for him. He also wears a size 18 shoe, so his feet can sometimes be a problem!

I am only 5"8 and had trouble fitting into The Matterhorn! My mum was behind me, she is about 5"6ish, and my knees were crammed into the front of the cart which gave me a fair few bruises.

Yeah, gotcha. After posting I thought, "Disney would never allow someone to ride in an unsafe position". It does suck that you're not able to fit on it though. But I bet that you have a great view of parades, fireworks, and pretty much everything else. At my height, I have a great view of backpacks or armpits.

My DH is 6' 9" and we are heading to DL in the spring. It will be his first time going there, as well as my youngest DS (17) who is 6'1".

Will DH be able to ride the Matterhorn? Will he hit his head? I remember zipping around curves when I was younger - I haven't been there since I was about 10 or so.

They both can ride Space Mountain in WDW. In fact, there is nothing DH can't ride in WDW.

Thanks for any advice!

I actually asked that, but was told both legs have to be under one lap bar. And then a given really strange look for suggesting it. Seemed logical to me!

He will be fine on Matterhorn, the seats are built for two normal-sized people to fit, so one large one is no problem. SM is the only ride I haven't been able to cram myself in so far, although some of the dark rides have been a tight squeeze. If I find anything else that isn't bigfoot-friendly I'll be sure to share. Enjoy the trip!

I'm only 6'0" and "pooh-sized," so I worry a lot more about my width than my height. My best friend is 6'3", though, and he said his shoulders were pressed up against the speakers on that ride and pounding against them the whole time, so it's probably better that you didn't ride.

The only problem with Matterhorn is that they are changing the ride vehicles during this current refurb. Instead of those (extremely) comfortable seats that can theoretically seat 2 people, or if you are tall like my entire family, we each get a seat to ourselves, there is going to be 3 seats per each car with a total of 6 seats per bobsled. I have the strangest feeling that it is going to be extremely tight for people over 5'9" and those who have long legs. We'll see what exactly it will be like when it reopens.

mickeymom629, it might actually not be open when you go depending on your travel dates. I think it is reopening June 14 (somebody correct me if I am wrong) so if you will be there when it reopens, maybe you could let us know how it is.

Unfortunately, Matterhorn is closed until June 14 for a major refurb. So unless by "spring" you mean the last week of spring, you won't get to experience Matterhorn this trip. Sorry.

I'm 6'5" 36" inseam and barely fit into SM. cross your ankles and scoot your butt down in the seat. For SM it's all about the legs.

I am basically 5'8..just a smidge under...and I definitely feel yah on the tight fit. I have long legs so I am always very close to being uncomfortable!!! my legs always make a perfect 90 degree angle..sometimes less but never more lol!

My hubby is 6'6" and "Pooh sized". Don't ask me how but somehow he manages to ride SM and all the rides in Fantasyland too. He usually sits in the front because they have a few extra inches of space. He definitely gets banged up but our kids would be so disappointed to have to ride without him!:rotfl:
