I will be going on my first trip to Disneyland in a couple of monhts. My 12 year old sister will be joining me as well. I've been trying to convince her to get on Space Mountain, since it's a relatively mild roller coaster. However after riding Splash Mountain over at WDW she has since been scared of any rides with huge drops. Which is where I come to ask the help of my fellow Disboarders, if I could get some feedback about this ride to show to my sister I know it would be very helpful. Any other ideas? As a comparisson point she did enjoy BTMR.
So if any of you guys could chime in and provide some feedback I'd appreciate it very much. =)

My 6 year old DD and 3 year old DS absolutely loved this ride in June - they begged to ride it over and over again. It really is very mild - and it is not like it is really dark - but you are actually flying in space!!!

Sorry - just read the BTMRR comment - space is very comparable - just that it is dark.

Space is one of my family's favorites at DL. Its our first ride every visit. My girls 7 and 9 like to start the morning with their roller coaster.:) If she likes BTMRR, then she'll like Space IMHO. BTMRR is much more jerky, and hard on the lower back. Splash is scary b/c you see the drop. Space is a dark coaster. If you don't want to see where you are going you won't. And it doesn't have the same big drop. Honetsly, even my inlaws rode it without much complaint afterward. My FIL picture is one of astonishment, and my MIL had her eyes squeezed shut, death gripping the bar (she hates heights BTW). But she admitted it was kinda fun.

Well, if it helps any my 3 year old is FINALLY 40" tall so when we go in 2 weeks he'll be going on Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Matterhorn, etc. Space Mountain is pretty mild in my opinion, not AT ALL like Rockin' Roller Coaster  , my FAVORITE ride at WDW.

I think it's funny when people are scared of the coasters at Disney. Wait till they go on one at Bush Gardens or the Hulk at Universal, that's a roller coaster, scarrrrryyyyyy!:scared1:

Yeah, Space is similar to BTM. And it's sooo much better at DL than at WDW, with the music.

:woohoo: when we took our first family trip in 2005, my 5 yr old DD had never been to an amusement park of any kind. (yes, i am a bad parent!;) )
we could not get her OFF of big thunder, she loved it so much! After we rode space mtn., she felt the same way! I honestly don't think space is even as fast as big thunder, but it may be the dark makes is feel slower. It's very smooth.
I think your sister will love it:love:

Well, Splash Mountain isn't quite the same as Space Mountain. There is no "big drop" on Space Mountain, and honestly, if you're going to ride Space Mountain, the one at DL is the one to ride. I found the one at WDW jerky and unpleasant, while I love the one at DL. If it helps, tell your sister that my 8 year old daughter has been riding Space Mountain for two years, and she *loves* it. We always fight over who gets to ride in the front because that's the best seat--it feels like you're flying! It's really incredible, we would never miss it. I think if she likes BTMRR, she's going to like Space Mountain--there aren't any drops that are any worse than BTMRR, that's for sure. I completely sympathize with not liking large drops, and I seriously, honestly love Space Mountain. It's definitely worth at least a try.

Does any of that help?

Space mountain tops out at roughly 25 mph with no big drops. Take her for a ride in the car at 25 mph and she'll know exactly what it'll be like. :)

Thanks very much for all the feedback, I will be showing her to this post later today!

Last year my son was 9 and having been to DL in 2004 he didn't want to ride the coasters because of getting scared on Splash as well. We made him go on Splash again first, it was a real mission but we thought it important for him to conquor his fear, after that first run on splash he was pleasantly suprised saying it wasn't as bad as he remembered first time, he didn't want to ride it again that day but he said he would before the end of the trip. From there it was easy, we only had to tell him that all other coasters were less scary than splash and he gave them all a go, by the end of the trip we had done splash, Space, BTMRR, Matahorn at least a dozen times each, he even went on ToT (once!) and the mailboomer (also just once) and Cal Scream (couldn't get him off that one either). The trick will be getting her back on Splash first, my son can testify to the fact that splash was no where near as scary second time round and in fact became his favourite ride of DL, often its the thought of doing something that is far far worse than the actual doing...

I would try and do Splash early though, so she has less time to worry about it and can enjoy the rest of the day. She will be very proud of herself if she does it even just once, try and sit her one from the back with you right at the back (DL splash is a single file of 6 seats)we found with my son someone reaching forward and holding his shoulders and reminding how proud he would feel really helped. The back is nowhere near as scary...

BTMRR is slower and less scary at the front, Space is the opposite, it is less scary at the back. Hope this helps

Splash Mountain is far scarier than Space Mountain!
Space Mountain you can't see where you're going but there is no huge drop like in Splash Mountain (as mentioned above). A castmember told us that Space Mountain never goes past 35 mph but that it feels way faster! That's the one ride I never put my arms up on though. Better safe than armless, haha.

But if you convince her to ride it once, she'll love it.

I haven't been on Space Mt. at DLR or WDW in YEARS. My ds6 wants to go on Space at DLR on our upcoming trip. Is it at DLR, or at WDW that the seats in Space are next to each other. I'm remembering at one park they had seats next to each other, and the other park had seats in a single row.

Also, I haven't been on Matterhorn in probably over 20 years. How is that ride for a first time coaster rider (ds6). Ds6 likes Splash and the Goofy Roller Coaster at WDW. Oh and he went on that new roller coaster at Animal Kingdom and loved it (Expedition Everest). Will Matterhorn be too much for him?

TIA,

Mary

:lmao: No, the Matterhorn doesn't even compare to the scariness of Expedition Everest. If he wasn't scared by Expedition Everest, he won't even blink at Matterhorn.

Yes, I seem to recall that DL was the one where two people could ride on Space Mountain side-by-side. Also, they re-did the restraint system so that each individual has their own lap bar--excellent for people who are bigger to ride with people who are smaller. :cheer2:

SM and EE are my ds6's favorite rides. I think I'll like the one at DL better than WDW because you can sit side by side instead of all by yourself.

The monorail goes faster than SM. Just keep your arms in. Friends took a backstage tour in the dark.

Ask her to do it one time and you'll never ask her again.

Thanks everyone! I showed her this post and she agreed to give it a shot! :cool1:
