DD2, age 17, is allergic to soy.

Anyone familiar with something that works for skin-itching from undetected soy in food? She's really good at asking, and knowing, but sometimes it's hidden and undetectable. Until you get the allergic reaction.

So far none of the antihistamines haves worked.

An epi-pen has been suggested but her reactions aren't anaphylaxis.

TIA.

I use a cream. It's called Hylatopic Plus and I got it from my dermatologist (prescription only). Antihistamines didn't work for me, either.

Thank you. We will check it out.
Does it always work, and if so, how long does it take?
Also approximate cost?

I've never had it not work. It usually takes about 10 -15 min. or so for the itching to subside to a reasonable level and some of the redness starts to fade. It continues to improve with time. As an example, if I run into something soy-laden at dinner and put the cream on in the evening, I will have no trouble sleeping and usually wake up with no redness or itching. One good dose does the job.

I don't know what it "really" costs b/c my Dr. always gives me a coupon from the mfr. that makes it "No More Than $25." So since I have an HSA and pay OOP for all meds, it's always $25. If you don't have that coupon or have copays, I don't know. Sorry.

I would give Ranitadine (Zantac) a try. It is sold at Wal-Mart and drugstores as a generic "acid reducer". It is also a non-drowsy histamine blocker. I know this sounds weird, but I take it before I drink alcoholic beverages to help with redness. It is super cheap and safe. I think it would be worth a try. She could even take it before eating foods that she may find suspect.

Have you seen a dermatologist? We took DS to one because his allergist suggested it. They sent us home with a bag of samples. Outside of steroid creams the best for him has been the $3 up and up hydrocortisone with aloe cream from target.
