We are in Canada, planning to fly out of Buffalo, 2 adults & four teens. Which airline is the best choice? Airtran's prices seem to be a bit better, but it seems we might be more likely to get a Non-stop at the time we want with Southwest. Not sure what to do...

Hi
I am flying southwest for $59 each way. so for my family of 4 it is about
$600 return. not bad can't really drive for that much and we get there faster
I just booked last week. just keep checking back to find the $59 price.:yay:

I personally would take Southwest over Airtran. Keep in mind that with Airtran you pay for your luggage and if you want to select your seats. So be certain to keep those fees in mind when you compare prices.
My biggest complaint with Airtran is that they make so many changes with their flight schedules once they been posted. So you book your trip for the times that you want and the next thing you know the scheduled has been rearranged.
Once Southwest opens up their schedule, it generally set in stone, except for weather delays etc.

No comparison IMHO about SW being heads above airtran.....they change schedules, change times and many have said they got NO notification of the changes.
We LOVE sw, no fees to change, cancel, etc...plus no luggage fees and they are a consistent carrier with on time performance. I'd pay EXTRA to fly SW over A/T any day!

Southwest is the better one. A good rate for BUF to MCO would be $59 each way. Sign up for their Ding if you haven't already done so.

Southwest. Great service, no luggage fees, free soda and nuts. If your lucky they will sing the boring flight instructions.

Southwest......DEFINITELY!!
Heck, you've got 6 people....is that 6 pieces of luggage? Check AirTran to see how much extra THAT is going to cost you.....EACH WAY!

I'm one of those that like to have a reserved seat, so I like AirTran over SWA. I will pay the few extra $$$ for a reserved seat. It seems that AirTran has lower fares on many routes out of IND than SWA. Counting the baggage and seat charge AirTran may be a little more, but that's OK with me. It all depends what's important to a person. The above link tells about AirTran as a good airline.

I also don't like to worry about getting my boarding pass 24 hours before departure on SWA. I have used SWA since the newer boarding system and it is better than the old "cattle call" but still not my thing.

I totally agree with Gary. RIght on.
Everyone keeps complaining Airtran changes flight schedules, I've flown Airtran 10+ times out of PHL, and never had any significant flight changes. 15 minutes tops. Airtran is my airline of choice.

Really, I don't have a major preference with either of them, it just depends on your personal preferences and what is important to you.

Southwest has two big advantages - they do not adjust their flight schedule a lot after it is released (which is why they generally wait so much longer to announce their schedule), and they do not charge for the first two pieces of luggage.

One of the major advantages (at least in my mind) with Airtran is the ability to preselect your seats if that matters to you. You don't have to pay the $6 each way if it does not matter to you where you sit, but if you are travelling with small children or are picky about where you like to sit in a plane, you have the option of preselecting your seats. I personally don't like the hastle of making sure I'm at a point where I can go online with SW exactly 24 hours before my flight and register.

We are flying Airtran this trip because (1) they had much better flight times for us than Southwest had, (2) Airtran was considerably cheaper, even when we figure in having to check a couple of bags for our family of 4 and paying for seat fees, and (3) we have two small children and are traveling with some family, and I would rather pay an extra $48 for our trip to ensure that our group all gets to sit together on the plane than risk it with Southwest and have to make sure I check in exactly 24 hours ahead of time to get a good boarding pass.

So, when looking at the cost, be sure to look at the fact that you will have to pay $15 per bag on Airtran (it is more for the second bag per person, but if you are taking more than one large suitcase and one carryon per person, you need to rethink what you are taking to WDW). Also consider whether you want to pay an extra $6 each way (note if you have a layover, you only pay the $6 once - it is $12 roundtrip, no matter how many stops you have). If you don't want to pay that extra fee, that is fine, but you do run the risk of not being able to sit together.

As for the changing flight times - I think that is somewhat overblown with Airtran. It appears that the vast majority of the time, flight times are not changed more than a few minutes, which is typical of almost all airlines. Southwest is very good about not changing flight times, but our schedule is not so structured that Airtran really concerned me that much.

When it comes to overall quality ratings, Airtran was recently ranked 2nd in domestic airlines (behind Hawaiian Airlines) in the 2009 Airline Quality Rating. Southwest was ranked 6th. This study compares on-time ratings, denied boardings (such as an overbooked flight), mishandled bags, and customer complaints.

I know some people swear that Southwest is the best and that Airtran is run by the devil, but in reality they are both very good airlines. You just need to make sure you know what you are getting with both of them.

I would pay a little more for direct flights at good times---that's more important to me than assigned seating, etc.

We are using both for our trip in September. We had a credit for SW so we used them for our flight going. Coming home we are on Airtran. Price is comparable for both (after baggage & seat fees) but going home we can check our bags at the resort with Airtran. We're leaving on a night flight so it was a big plus to be able to get rid of the bags so early. We will be touring the parks all day. We'll have a rental car so our carry ons will be in the trunk and we'll head to the airport from the MK.

If everything is equal between the 2, I would fly SW every time. But in your situation, if the prices are the same (or close) I'd book by which flight time is better or direct flight.
