I live in NW New Jersey and am about 45 minutes or so (with no traffic) from Newark. We're about an hour and twenty or so from LGA or JFK.
We're flying to Ft Lauderdale in November for our cruise out of Miami and I can either fly Jetblue out of JFK (the prices out of Newark are outrageous) or I can drive down to Philly and try Southwest.
Right now, the JB price out of JFK for the night before the cruise is $119/pp before tax. The price out of Philly on SW is $87.40/pp with tax.
According to Google Maps, it's about 30 miles more to Philly vs JFK. The flight is about 6:55 PM vs. 7:35 and I think that if we left as soon as school was over (3:25) or a bit earlier, we'd make either one in plenty of time. But I have never flown SW before and am not sure that it's worth it to drive the extra distance for the money.
The other factor is that I already have $80 in credit in my JB account. So the savings between the two is cut down to about $78 at this point if the fares on JB don't change (or I don't get any further credit on my August flight).
I don't think that $78 warrants an extra 30 miles and perhaps 45 or more minutes in the car. Does anyone have any thoughts?
I keep thinking that as time goes on, the JFK fares will come down a bit (really, I just don't see that many people flying the first week of November, unless you're from NJ and have Teachers' Convention week, which makes me understand the higher prices from Newark) and with my credit (and hopefully more) it will be a better option.
