I see a lot of thread on here talking about Southwest. Are they really better than Delta?

I'm heading down to DW on 12/06-12/12 from NYC. I just check the price for 2 adults at Southwest and it cost about $640. I also checked Delta, and for 2 tickets, Delta only charge about $418. (I already book my flight about 2 months ago on Delta, and got it for $358.

I'm about to book my trip for next February. So, I'm wondering is there something special about southwest that I should consider?

Thanks

When comparing prices, add the checked luggage fee on Delta (if you are checking luggage). Southwest does not have checked luggage fees. Delta has reserved seats, SW has the boarding # system. SW now charges a $10 fee to get early bird check-in.

Delta has frequent schedule changes but they are accomodating. I have flights for December that I got in April that has had 2 major schedule changes but what we have now is better than the original.

SWA does not charge for up to 2 checked bags per person, Delta does. Delta has a habit of changing flight schedules after you've booked, SWA does not. But Delta lets you book 11 months in advance whereas SWA is more like 4 months. Delta has assigned seating, SWA does not. SWA has an additional-cost option of Early Bird checkin that is not necessary on Delta. SWA will let you rebook to a lower fare, if the price of your flight goes down, and give you the difference in future travel vouchers, Delta does not.

If any of the above is important to you, base your decision on that. My priorities are price and schedule. That meant this year we flew down on Delta ($69 each plus a $15 fee for our 1 checked bag, early Sat morning flight) and SWA back ($79 each plus $10 each for Early Bird Checkin and a late Wed evening flight). We also only book non-stop flights out of BDL (Hartford CT).

Hope this helps

My Delta flight did get changed, later by a minute on both to and return trip. I don't know how a minute can make a difference, but doesn't affect me thankfully.

I guess I'm Delta then. Usually carry-on is enough for us. Even at the worst scenario, one checked bag at $30.

I fly SWA whenever I can. I love them...they are great! I love the fact that you can take 2 bags for free and they don't nickel and dime you to death like the other airlines are these days. I also love that you can rebook your flights for a lower fare if the price goes down, and keep the difference as credit towards future flights. I also love the non-assigned seating. The flight attendants are also a lot more laid back and don't have that edginess and kind of stuck up attitude that you find on a lot of the other airlines. I actually used to work for Delta myself. After I quit Delta, I switched to SWA and have been with them ever since! :goodvibes

but the comp upgrade to First Class on Delta last week really spoiled me!!!
