I am in the process of purchasing a One-Way ticket home from LA. It has a connection would I need to only purcashe early bird check-in for the first leg or do I purchase it for both legs. I do have to change planes. Thanks,,

Correct. And, in fact, you will get checked in for both legs at 36 hours before your first flight.
