Southern Food..........MMMMMM......

I love starting food threads, I like to see what others enjoy. I am from the south, I have always lived in NC. Anyway we eat certain dishes that are considered southern. One of my all time favorites is chicken and dumplings but I would have to say that country fried steak with milk gravy is a close second. If you live in the south or have traveled to the south, what is your favorite?

Ahh man favorite is fried chcken , collard greens, and cornbread.

For dessert is a sweet potato pie.

I true southern at heart. I loved bisconts and gravy and grits together.

I love buttermilk and cornbread. Very good combo. I also cook a big ole pot of pinto beans each week and fry some fried taters to go with them. And I make cornbread to go with it.

Grits! (Girls Raised in the South )

Homemade Apple Dumplins (not the movie) with vanilla sauce....cornbread and fried chicken. Fresh Watermelon. I don't care for turnip greens though....

My mother's favorite is fried corn!

A good southern breakfast can't be beat....with eggs, sausage, bacon, homemade bisquits, and gravy.....mmmmmmmmmmmmm

For lunch, maybe a tomato sandwich... or for one of the King's favorites, a peanut butter and banana sandwich!

And for dinner....pinto beans, cornbread, and fried okra....mmmmmmmmmmmmm

And dessert???? PECAN PIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all need to get together and have a good ole fashioned pot luck. I was planning on tomato sandwiches for lunch tomorrow, but you know they NEED Duke's mayo, salt and pepper.

There is so much to love...

Mrs. AlabamaAlan's personal favorite is the backbone area meat of a slaughtered hog/cracklins', pinto beans and cornbread.

Shannon, she grew up kind of poor and ate a lot of pintos and cornbread! And yes, Poke Salat too!

She's a great biscuit maker too!

My folks are big fried okra and fried green tomato eaters.

alabamaalan-- I was sure that nobody else would know about poke salat, my great grandmother had it in her garden every year, just for me. I eat spinich now, out of despiration for the taste.

I was born and raised in Texas, and we ate red beans (pinto's) and cornbread (heck, I didn't know we were POOR, I thought it was because we liked them!") Well, when we moved south, I was shocked to learn that "red" beans were kidney beans...and they ate them with rice!

Every Sunday Momma fixed fried chicken, masked potatoes, cream gravy, biscuits and banana pudding (she added a can of crushed pineapple to her pudding...boy, was it good!).

Since my parents are from 'Bama, Alan, I know what poke salat is and I think it's NASTY. But I think okra is nasty, and grits are pretty nasty too.

Hmmm... I'd like a plate of butter beans, collards or mustard greens with vinegar (over rice), fried side meat, corn bread fritters with onions in them, and a piece of pecan pie for dessert.

Great thread! I've got a cousin getting married in May, and I just found out this week, that his fiancee has decided that she doesn't want us to throw her a conventional bridal shower. She is from up North, and instead she wants us to throw a traditional 'Southern meal' for her family when they come down here for the wedding! I guess we got her hooked on southern cooking.

How about a NC bar-b-que sandwich. Even though I grew up in Florida, my Grandma is from NC and that's how we did BBQ. It wasn't until I was older that I began to realize there are other types out there. My mouth is watering. Her slaw is the best EVER!

Any of the foods mentioned above are good. *smacking lips* Is it too early for lunch?

Almost forgot, a slice of buttermilk pie would be good for dessert. Yum!
