Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this, but thought I'd give it a shot.

Has anyone attempted to stick with the South Beach Diet while on vacation at Disney? My cravings for carbs, sweets, and starches are definately pretty much gone (at this moment in time).......but I'm afraid that I'll totally cave when I hit my first ice cream cart (Mickey bars were always a weakness). I also made a priority seating at Le Cellier (if nothing else, the pretzel bread will do me in) :rolleyes1 . Can I nibble a bit without totally reversing all the progress I've made losing cravings?

I'm in Phase 2. Thanks a ton.

I'll bump this up for you! I'm in phase one and my cravings are OK for now but after reading all the menus and see the pics of the restaurants in the World I may be back in phase 1 after the trip! :rolleyes1

Okay, I don't do South Beach or Atkins or any of those, just the 12 carb per day diet my endricronologist put me on to deal with my recent diagnosis of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. I've been doing this for about 6 months now and no, I'm not perfect with it. I get some very strong cravings and they win from time to time. But, I can say you can eat healthy at WDW. I was able to maintain my glucose levels to my target range of 120 or below for fasting and 140 or below for 2 hours after meals. I only blew it one morning and I know it was because DS and I stopped at McDonalds in DD for a late night snack. I had only planned on drinking a light lemonade, but DS didn't eat all of his fries and they looked so good...I ate about half and the next morning my sugar level was 130 something.

I did indulge in the Pretzel bread at Le Cellier and the kids chocolate "moose" and other things that I really should not have under the strictest dieting, but I also did not eat any snacks while I was there and I walked a lot...we all do when we go to the parks. That in itself helps keep my sugar down more than anything. The key was that I didn't eat the whole chocolate moose, DH and I split it, so moderation is important.

The same thing happened on our DCL last Thanksgiving. I had only been diagnosed 3 weeks and it was so hard to stay on the 12 carb (1500 calorie) diet. I ate fruit every morning, indulged in desserts, ate pasta...all of the things I should avoid, but because I ddi so in moderation and was very active while on the cruise, I managed to keep my sugar levels within the target range.

It can be done with a little planning, moderation, and exercise. Have faith!!

Diet at Disney? Seriously? I couldn't do it. The first walk past the Main Street Bakery would do me in. I love their chocolate chip cookies. I can smell them now!! :rotfl:

I've been on SB since last May and lost 50 lbs in five months. Of course you can stick to it while in WDW, but you're on vacation - live a little! I eat whatever I want, but try to stay away from pasta, breads, etc. When you come back home just be strict again. If you're cravings truly come back, go back to phase 1. Stay active and drink plenty of water.

I have been on Atkins for almost six years now so it is a Way Of Life for me. I definately cannot say that I never cheat and I do believe in a little endulgence on vacation, but I want to *feel good* too! Just eating everything in sight is a sure way to make my energy levels plummet, despite the intense stimulation of Disney.
Now, I was able to get the dining plan for free and I know that if you make ADR, the restaurants are supposed to be able to accomodate your dietary needs with advance (24 - 48 hours??) notice. What about for the Counter Service meals? How do you do it?

Thanks to one and all for your responses. :goodvibes

I do feel a little better now knowing that I can probably eat at least some no-no foods in moderation. :cheer2: I was getting a tad depressed thinking that I would feel deprived on my vacation. I guess the very worst that can happen is I go back to Phase 1.

Hello, Debbie. Like I said, at any sit down restaurant that you made an ADR (formally PS) for, they can accomodate your needs with advance notice. From what I have seen of the menus, they will have food that I can eat, but that particular entree may not come with the vegetable that I can eat. I'm sure that they could substitute the veggie and make the meats with no sauce. My concern was getting a low carb dessert. After all, dessert is supposed to be included so why should I have to have sugar to get one? As far as Counter Service, I think that there is less they can do for you, but you can usually ge a Chicken Caesar Salad if nothing else. All of the desserts sound so good, so I'll probably end up having one or two. As long as you don't make a daily habbit of it, and you will be walking alot, you should be just fine.
