Sorry Gaston, They are MUCH More Interesting Than You!*6/8* NEW Trip Report Link p154

The seminar looks like so much fun! And the finished product looks delicious.

Sure looks like you ladies were having a lot of fun that afternoon!! ;) I have never heard about that Moroccan hilariousness, but I'll have to track it down on our next trip. :rotfl:

Another lovely addition by you, Cynthia. We went into that "Italian Wine Ditch" and it was quite nice...very peaceful. But boy they sure jumped on you when you walk in the door. Gee, can we take a little look first? I think Nicki just wanted to see if she could just buy some of the olives or something...none of us were in a wine mood (well, I don't drink it at all...doesn't agree with me).

Lovely photos of the BOG lady with the cranberries...I hope she didn't fall.

Oh my... I'm not sure where to begin...;)

It looks as if you ladies had a VERY good time at Food & Wine...:thumbsup2

At some point I lost track :thumbsup2 of how many drinks/wine you guys consumed but it sounds like you all were good team players...:rotfl2:

I love your food seminar... I had a meal at La Hacienda... it was quite good... I would have enjoyed seeing his demo... & I've always seen tomatillos and wondered what to do with them... The mole sounds like it would have been excellent...:thumbsup2

(Have I said recently how I need a combo Halloween / F&W trip? lol .... :rotfl2: I don't think I've actually said it this week...)

I'm glad to see your photos of Tutto Gusto... I've heard that in addition to the wines they do have Italian cheeses/charcuterie... some pastas and paninis... I thought it would make a nice escape for a little meal and some nice wine...:thumbsup2

Now Mary Ellen, really? You couldn't help it could you? You had to post that photo in Morocco... now enabling other highly susceptible to suggestion Disers to now go check that out (myself obviously included...;) & then Cynthia just had to go and do it too...;) to just reinforce the suggestion... I think we now have another unofficial Dis meet and greet just like the chairs at the Boardwalk... only their at least PG rated...:rotfl: Only this one doesn't have a name... or does it...? ;)

Cynthia, I had no idea "mole" just meant "sauce"... I always thought it was that really dark sauce, with I think chocolate in it. I'd enjoy it much more with tomatillos! You learn something new...

That steak & sweet potatoes dish looks delish. I love sweet potatoes, but DH hates them, so we never have them here. Sad!

It was a great afternoon! I will definitely do another seminar or two the next time I make it to food and wine. I don't know when that will be but I'll definitely be signing up early!

I think she was picking something out of the shrubbery but it sure looks like she is bracing herself, doesn't it? Bummer about wine not agreeing with you. I've given up all things with bubbles for the same reason, it's kind of a drag. the cheese menu at Tutto Gusto looked lovely and they had some other nice options. The tables are low though so it's much more of an app/drink spot than maybe light lunch or dinner, unless you sat at the bar. I hate hunching over my food if it's a real meal.

That's it! taking one for the team! What was fun is everyone just got what they wanted, it wasn't like we all went to one kiosk and got the same thing, it made it fun.

Well he isn't the chef at La H but they definitely work together he said, I don't think the dish is on the menu at either place (it was asked but I'm not 100% on the answer). I think my concern with tomatillos is step one "remove the husk" I need to inspect one at the store to understand exactly what that entails! The sauce was outstanding! The chicken, basic but good.

I'm glad to see your photos of Tutto Gusto... I've heard that in addition to the wines they do have Italian cheeses/charcuterie... some pastas and paninis... I thought it would make a nice escape for a little meal and some nice wine...:thumbsup2

Yes it would! I don't recall pasta but think there was panini and there was definitely a lovely cheese/charcuterie menu. I have visions of Jeff and I stealing away there.

Cynthia, I had no idea "mole" just meant "sauce"... I always thought it was that really dark sauce, with I think chocolate in it. I'd enjoy it much more with tomatillos! You learn something new...

That is what I always thought too!!! The chef's explanation made more sense. While the word itself may mean sauce, the execution of it through liquefaction and blending completely makes sense.

That steak & sweet potatoes dish looks delish. I love sweet potatoes, but DH hates them, so we never have them here. Sad!

I adore sweet potatoes, could eat them everyday. I make them semi frequently but typically incorporate them into a dish like a stew as then the family likes them better. They will eat them mashed or baked (Evan won't) but prefer them in other ways. I do a African Chicken Ground Nut Stew in the crockpot with them that the whole family loves so that's probably the way they get them most of the time, other than at the holidays when I do a whipped/mashed version with Chipotle Cream.

Ok now I want sweet potatoes!

Great report so far, not that I expect it to get worse!LOL. Tomatillos have a brown papery husk that will come off with no effort. I find them at my Meijer store & Kroger's in my area of Ohio.

im hoping you guys tried some of the Caribbean food?

We really lucked out this first foray around the F&W kiosks, finding seating every time. With that, bellies more than full and having had at least 3 full drinks (the wine is a 2 oz pour so 3 would equal one glass) so for me we'd have...wine at the seminar, mai tai, 3 kiosks wines (France, Poland and S Africa) and then one full glass at Tutto Gusto. Yep, about 3 drinks total, maybe a skosh more. Over about 5 hours according to the timestamp on my photos. So not quite as bad as I'm sure it looks! But hey, we were on vacation! That said, we were ready to give our systems a short break, head back to the Festival Center and see just what the Chase Lounge was all about.

total amount doesnt seem bad at all, we ended up with 7 different drinks during the day, spread out not bad.:thumbsup2

with the smaller glasses it was very nice to try different ones.

Ah, so like an onion skin kind of? I think the word "husk" makes it sound like it would be difficult to get off and require a technique. The only husk that comes to mind is corn...with all those darn strings.

Well done!

Oh yeah! :woohoo:

I can't wait to take Jeff to the wine bar. I loved that place! I don't think my pictures are much better but we will see when I do my update.

I just saw the update and I think the pictures look great. Tutto Gusto -- good to know. I'd hate to be walking around asking where the wine ditch was. :rotfl2:

Great updates ladies! :thumbsup2

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How did YOU know that! I know Cynthia already said that was correct, but darn - you must cook. :thumbsup2 If we were giving out slushie credits I think you deserve two for that one!

No, I'm more of an "eater". :lmao: And I've watched a cooking show or two. I told Judy your description and she guessed it too....but she does cook.

:rotfl: OK - THAT's funny - and could possible happen given the right set of circumstances. :rotfl2: What a lucky kid!

I was kinda pleased with that joke myself. :)

It's super cool. But from this point on I am referring to it as the "Wine Ditch" thanks to Stringbean!

Love it, and that's what I'm going to call it too....I already used it in my reply to Cythia.

Mole just means sauce and all this says is that it will be a green one.

You put that there for my benefit, didn't you? :rotfl2:

There are 2 full seminar locations, one for food and one for beverages, as Mary Ellen mentioned they were just putting the final touches on the next beverage one which was to be a Lasseter wine seminar and it had sold out quite early.

That's the same John Lasseter who runs Pixar and Disney animation, right?

I actually like the Pipeline Porter--it's brewed with Kona coffee.

Now since you've already seen our photo voyage to Morocco I wont belabor the point, only showing this just to give you a better idea of where it is in the pavilion

Oh, ok, 2

:sad2:

While we did that, I think Pat swung over to Germany and picked up one of these (The Apple Strudel with Karamel and Vanilla Sauce I believe)

Ooh, that looks like a winner.:thumbsup2

Cynthia - you are absolutely not a dork for planning what you wanted to try at F&W. I say that because I also planned! I printed off all the menus, highlighted things...I did not take them with me to the park.

There were a couple things I missed too - that strudel, that steak and sweet potatoes. I love sweet potatoes too!

Sure wish I could pop back down next October for a weekend of F&W!

Were they serving/selling the Lasseter wine anywhere other than the seminar? I didn't notice, but wasn't particularly looking. Wonder if it's any good?

im hoping you guys tried some of the Caribbean food?

I didn't, I have no idea what Mary Ellen ate on her last night though! It got a super bad rap on the podcast I listened to so I didn't go there.

Well, our day isn't over :rotfl:

pretty much

Yep!

Kona makes a really great IPA but it isn't sold outside of Hawaii yet. On the big island, they have a brewpub not far from where you guys are staying. We liked it so much, we ate there twice! Super yummy food and you can get beer to go (in a growler) should you so desire. One of our favorite souvenirs from that trip is the pint glass (we had 2 but one broke) that says "liquid Aloha". They also have one on Oahu but it looks pretty far from Aulani. Doesn't mean we won't go there but only if we are headed that way so it will be a spur of the moment thing.

:goodvibes

Yeah....I'm a dork. I went through them, put them into a spreadsheet to make sure I was budgeting enough and then sent a "short list" by country, to TripIt so I'd have it on my phone for reference.

There were a couple things I missed too - that strudel, that steak and sweet potatoes. I love sweet potatoes too!

Sure wish I could pop back down next October for a weekend of F&W!

I missed several things as well, though I did make a good dent in my wish list and tried some things that weren't on there to start.

They had it at the festival center by the bottle (it's not cheap!) but that's the only place I saw it.

The new updates just confirm for me 2 things....

1. I missed so much! I believe f&w was going on for about a week of my trip. Wanna know how many things I had from a kiosk? Well, I had two glasses of hard cider (angry orchard to be specific and yes... it is now a new favorite of mine..especially with some fireball whiskey added to it. YUM), one order of escargot and one other drink... some fruity slushy boozy drink.

2. I MUST go back!!! Good thing another fall trip plan is in the works.. and then next year I am going to make dh go with me just for F&W since it will be our 25th anniversary. Between those two trips, I bet I catch up on all that I missed this year.

My cute little name tag which I immediately put on my camera bag
Does the sombrero have some kind of Cava significance?

My idea of cooking is boiling water and throwing pasta in the pot. OK - so I exaggerate. But that's not too far off from the truth. Just sayin'
Open freezer, take something out, put in microwave, push some buttons, enjoy!

This caught my eye - wine in a pouch! Easy to conceal at your next soccer game or family outing.
Hey mom, can I have one of your Capri Suns??? :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

(I say soccer game because I was cleaning the bleachers at one of the last state tournament game and I found some lady's booze on the stand - nothing like making it obvious!
Well, if you try to hide it that makes you an alcoholic. :rotfl2:

I took about four pictures, but I think one will suffice
You felt the need to take 4 pictures of that??? :rolleyes1

Hey - get your mind out of the gutter!
Hey, you're the one that took 4 pictures of it.

I think this picture illustrates what you look like AFTER you come out of the wine bar. There is some serious squinting action going on here
Whether that is due to alcohol consumption or moving from dark to light is open to interpretation. :rotfl:

We may or may not have stopped in Poland

Apparently that last picture was just a warm up to this -

Was this in Korea? I think so. Close up!

Apparently we stopped in Argentina
I'm seeing a lot of uncertainty here. How many drinks was that again??? :rolleyes1 :lmao:

I guess I found something amusing about that hat
Yes. Yes it is.

Having arranged to meet up with Pat, we headed out. Apparently I found the bog more interesting than the pretty wine bottles!
Well, you both started taking pictures of different things, finally! :lmao:

Hey, she went there first!
But she only posted one picture of it... how many did you take??? :confused3:rotfl:

It is a seriously Zen kind of place (for me). I hope it retains that and Jeff and I can escape there during our next big trip as heavens knows we will need to run away from 5 teenage boys at least once!
By "retains that," you mean "doesn't get overrun by loud, sloppy drunks," right?

And I think a refuge from 5 teenage boys will be a mandatory thing. :rotfl2::lmao:

While we did that, I think Pat swung over to Germany and picked up one of these (The Apple Strudel with Karamel and Vanilla Sauce I believe)
Of all the food pictures the 2 of you have posted this one is the most cruel. I want one!

We really lucked out this first foray around the F&W kiosks, finding seating every time.
Well, that certainly is a win. I've never made it to F&W, but it seems like I'm always reading TR's about it where people are standing next to trash cans eating.

So, what you're saying is that it was a failed effort at drinking around the world...

But hey, we were on vacation!
Absolutely. Calories and drinks don't count! :thumbsup2:rotfl:

I didn't, I have no idea what Mary Ellen ate on her last night though! It got a super bad rap on the podcast I listened to so I didn't go there.

thats why i dont listen to people who are suppose to be experts...we had the ropa veja stuff there, and it was one of the best things i had of all. kids loved it as well. it was a sort of spicy beef shredded with cilantro rice, very good.

i also dont listen to people who vote on the award show best moves etc...i have never even heard of 80% of the ones up for awards. stupid experts. :rotfl2:

I'll get to that cider in my next update I think! I wanted to get the escargot and then was too full everytime I was by there. YAY for going back, I want to plan another trip but just don't see it in the cards for so long it makes me really sad. Probably 2015, if I'm lucky.

Does the sombrero have some kind of Cava significance?

First drink of our first girls trip!

Well, you both started taking pictures of different things, finally! :lmao:

It was bound to happen!

And I think a refuge from 5 teenage boys will be a mandatory thing. :rotfl2::lmao:

The whole thing scares me to death

Of all the food pictures the 2 of you have posted this one is the most cruel. I want one!

Me too. Right now! And it wasn't even mine.

Well, that certainly is a win. I've never made it to F&W, but it seems like I'm always reading TR's about it where people are standing next to trash cans eating.

Me too. I had heard they'd added seating and while it might have taken a little walk a few times, we always found something. Then again, we didn't attempt to sit anywhere during the weekend, which did get insanely crowded.

So, what you're saying is that it was a failed effort at drinking around the world...

Absolutely. Calories and drinks don't count! :thumbsup2:rotfl:

it's not failed if the calories don't count! :thumbsup2

thats why i dont listen to people who are suppose to be experts...we had the ropa veja stuff there, and it was one of the best things i had of all. kids loved it as well. it was a sort of spicy beef shredded with cilantro rice, very good.

:rotfl: well none of those folks are experts, it was a rather random group of people they got together for it, which was good. A few had it and said it was dry and bland and since more than one had it, though not together, I opted out. That said, I do think time of day when you hit some of the kiosks and how busy it is can really impact how fresh things are. By in large the podcast didn't dictate where I went, it was just one data point.

i also dont listen to people who vote on the award show best moves etc...i have never even heard of 80% of the ones up for awards. stupid experts. :rotfl2:

I am the opposite. Not so much when they first come out unless reviews are really really bad and then I do a check with friends that have seen things but we do take note at the awards shows and have watched some things (video at that point obviously), bought some music we'd never ever have heard of otherwise so it expands our horizons a bit which I like.

:woohoo: another update!

It's so fun to read "the same trip report" from two different perspectives. :thumbsup2

Guess we will have to check out the Italian "Ditch" on our next trip - your choises look lovely. ;)

Cynthia is doing a great job holding the fort down here, so I'm not going to worry about replies. If I can get to them tonight, I will. But I am working on my soccer video and shadow boxes, so I am going to try to keep the DIS from distracting me tonight.

Late guys.

And - I see some updates that I want to read, but I am going to force myself to walk away from the computer now. :rotfl:

It is lovely, you definitely need to visit it and it has lots of lovely snacks!

Too funny, on the same podcast someone had gotten the Chili Colorado. He's going on and on about it and his wife pipes in that it wasn't real meat. He couldn't believe it. I did go to Terra later in the trip so that will get covered.

I'm with you though, in general I'm an equal opportunity eater but when it adds up $$ I did have to make some tough choices. That and you do get full eventually!.
