I got called into my supervisor's office yesterday while at work, so I be-bopped in there, thinking she wanted to ask me about my schedule or if I would teach a class. She told me it would just be a minute, no need to even sit down.

Then she looks at me and says, "Can you think of any time when you would have pulled Dilaudid (a very potent and very addictive narcotic) on more than one patient at once, or more than one dose?"

I racked my brain, and though, well, yeah...If I've got two or three patients with orders for pain meds, I'll pull them all at once to save some steps. Everyone does that. Or if I was sedating someone and needed a larger amount, etc. But never more than two or three doses at one time. Any more and you set yourself up for a med error or you'll get flagged by pharmacy. It's also very unusual for three patients to have an order for Dilaudid at once. If you do, then you've got some bad ju-ju and some very injured patients in your care.

Then she said, "Do you remember on May 25 if you would have done it?" I said, well...I'd have to think about it, but I didn't think so. Then she said, "Let me interrupt you...I know you didn't do it, and I didn't think you would anyway."

When I asked why, she said, "Well...it shows that on May 25, at 6:22pm, you, or someone using your code, went in to the Omnicell and took out NINE one milligram Dilaudids. And I already checked, and you were OFF that day. Even if you were at work, that's not during your shift. And you're not the only one. Two other people have large, large amounts taken out too."

I almost threw up. It makes me sick to think that someone I work with, that I trust, that other people trust, would have such blatant disregard and disrespect for me not only as a co-worker, but as a professional and also as a friend. I offered to go take a drug test on the spot, even to let them cut my hair, but she said there was no reason to, and to not even worry. That made me feel good, but I'm still so mad I could cry...and I did when I got home.

I also have a sneaking suspicion who it is. I didn't tell her, but it is nagging at me. I decided to let her conduct her investigation, look at the schedule, look at the other Omnicell activity that day, look at physicians' orders, etc. and I think she'll come to the same conclusion I have. The only thing is, the person I suspect is leaving next week, for a new job. It will be almost a moot point, but I don't want to let them get away with it. On the other hand, if my suspicions are wrong, that would be a devastating accusation for me to make. You don't want to be wrong about something like this, you know?

Anyway.. I just wanted to vent, and I can't tell anyone at work because they don't the person doing it to stop...they want to catch them in the act.

I'm just still very, very ticked off...and I have to go to work tonight. It will be hard to be civil to this person that I suspect. They are a close, close friend, and they knew that I used the same password for virtually everything...well, not anymore.

I can only imagine how upset you are. Someone put you in jeopardy for their own personal gain. That would make me furious. I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope the stinker is caught and punished.

That sucks so bad!!! I would be livid and hurt and feel betrayed, too.

How much hair do they need (I am guessing they can test it)? Just trying to think of a way you could maybe find out on the sly.

It would really bother me to let this one go if it turns out to be the woman who is leaving! But you're right, you can't say anything without proof.

I almost threw up for you. How truly, incredibly awful. I've seen careers ruined in one day because of stuff like this, and there are no words for someone who would put your livelihood in jeopardy like that.

Good luck tonight...

That's really upsetting.
:sad2:

Be strong tonight. so sorry you have to deal with this.

That sickens me. Thank goodness your supervisor knows better. I can't imagine the grief you would have to go through to prove your innocence. Don't let this woman get away with it. Her liscense should be revoked.

Woah. That is just horrid. Even worse that it is someone you consider a close friend. :(

I am so sorry you are going through this.. it happened to my mom not that long ago and she was so stressed!

if it is that person you think can they loose their licence to practice??

Then it would not be for nothing..

Mmmm, I would consider talking to your supervisor and telling them about your concerns (while stressing that you do NOT know for sure).

IF it is that person, they need to be caught. They could ruin someone's career over this (not to mention the fact that they're either addicted themselves or are selling to someone else). If it isn't them, they won't be caught doing anything.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Sorry you had to go through this.

I hope whoever it is gets caught and gets caught before they leave-if it's that person.

Can't they be prosecuted for this?

You know that it wasn't you and that you are a good person. Take comfort in that. I know it must be hard.

As a nurse, I'm sure you understand how addictive Dilaudid is. The person who tried to set you up would probably stop at nothing to get his/her fix.

My sister's friend was an RN who got hooked on this stuff. She had worked very very hard to become an RN, came from a crappy family who put her out on the street at 15 and she overcame those obstacles and put herself through nursing school. Somewhere along the way she took a wrong turn and started using this stuff. She worked in a nursing home and started giving the patients a placebo, and took the Dilaudid herself. Eventually her superiors caught on and her license was suspended. She got clean and has been for 20 years, but it was a long hard road. Her withdrawl and recovery was very similar to that of a heroin addict.

I sure hope the person who is responsible for this gets help and soon.

 I'm so glad you were off and she doesn't suspect you to begin with... I hope the one you suspect is the one that did it and they move on so you don't get into trouble of any kind or have to deal with watching out for her! I hope they get the help they need soon.

the problem i see, is if this person leaves before it is determined he/she is doing it, they go on to another place with a clean resignation on their record. if you feel strongly you could approach your sup. so something could be initiated prior to their leave-in this way at least something could be on the record for subsequent employers (i had 2 co-workers both who embezzled BIG TIME, one was found out while employed-her employment records will always reflect the situation, the other not until months after the fact-unless subsequent employers do a felony search, they will know nothing of her history).

you read/hear all too often of mis-doings by medical people and how there were suspicions in prior jobs but they just passed off the problems when the person moved on-i think that is as criminal as the misdoings themselves. you are not making false allegations, just sharing your actual observations about a situation that your supervisor formaly brought to your attention.

WOW...that must have thrown you completely...both my mother and sister are Registered Nurses. My Mom is retired and was Director of Nurses for a large nursing home for yearsssssss and my sis is a Case Management nurse here in Boston.

That being said....

They were and always will be so unbelievably passionate about their jobs like 24/7 ::yes:: ! My DM and DS would have been SHOCKED to pieces if this happened to them ::yes:: .

OP: :grouphug: to you while this matter is under investigation!

Keep us updated! We are here for you! :thumbsup2

My mom is a LPN in a nursing home, in the Alzheimer's unit. It is her speciality.:goodvibes

Anyway she has at least 1 or 2 people a year that steal drugs.:scared1: Then they have to go thru the standard drug protocol to get this person fired. They have to catch them. It is NUTS!

So sorry you had this happen. Probably will not be the last time.:worried:

Sorry to hear you've been so betrayed. I actually gasped when you said how much was taken out. I'm assuming you are changing all your codes?

That would be horrible to go through. We once had a RN who was stealing Demerol. Our counts were always off till she quit. Now we use Pyxis and don't have a password, we use our fingerprints. Can't fake those.
