About 6 months ago I bought a Dell and got $%^@% over. They eventually took it back and gave me a full refund. Now I want a Sony anyone own one or heard horror storys about them?

I recently read the following message about this very subject:
Like other people, I've also formed some opinions - and that's all they are. However, they are based on observations, not just pulled out of the sky, so here goes:

Firstly, name me one manufacturer about whom one cannot find many complaints. I believe these don't exist. Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, whoever, ALL have people complaining about something or other not working, or about poor service, or poor technical support (this is just about universal, even if some people are occasionally satisfied). Of course, we tend to hear from people who have had problems, not from those who haven't.

...

I'm just pointing out that people's perceptions are often based on nothing concrete. Or even if an opinion is based on one's personal experience, we need to keep in mind the fact that for every x satisfied users, there are y unsatisfied ones, and these are the ones we hear from most of the time. However, when seeking opinions such as those expressed in the OP here, we tend to get responses relating to items that are big sellers. Obviously, the more popular an item, the larger the potential number of responders.
I just did as bxf suggested and found lots of complaints about Sony. You name the brand, I can find complaints. We'll find a very high number of complaints regarding Dell, because they are among the four brands that sell the most personal computers these days. Three of those four brands have "lots of complaints" about quality and service, and the fourth of the four brands have "lots of complaints" about their prices. :rotfl:

Having said all that, if I were to ever sacrifice all I've learned about how to get the most out of my Dell computers, and sacrifice all I've learned about working with the good folks at Dell, and try to learn how to get the most out of another brand and another company, it would probably be Sony. I've got a lot of Sony products, and they're comparable to Dell in most every way. If you are going to switch brands and expend the effort necessary to learn how to work with a new personal computer supplier for yourself, then I think Sony is a great choice.

I have a Dell laptop now, but my previous piece of &^$% was a Sony Vaio. The hard drive bit the dust twice during as many years.

Have a Sony VAIO and haven't had a bit of trouble so far. Had a Gateway and it sucked.

I've had a sony for awhile now also have (work) dell laptop and DD has a HP.
I work my sony very hard video editing lots of deleting of big files and so forth and have never had a problem with it.( I don't do any illegal coping but herd that might be an issue with SONY they are very hard on this)

My Dell I use for work and do alot of SW transfer downloading onto copiers/production printing. And it works great as well.

Now my DD HP as had some issues but nothing that couldn't be fixed so far (I think it's her and her friends trying to get around parental control.

Like Bicker said it's usually not the brand just luck of the draw some models in a certain brand have issuses but the brands wouldn't be around .

computers are like cars. Many people love their Toyotas, but you'll always find someone who had a Toyota lemon. Same with computers. I'd stick with the Dell personally. (Buying a dell today ... my HP laptop is dying.)

I've had a Sony Vaio for over 2 years and have not had one problem.

My only Dell experience is at work and we've had huge hard drive crash problems there. Some of my co-workers have gone through 3 hard drives in 6 months and it's rare to find a person who hasn't had at least one hard drive failure (this is in the ~2 yrs we've had them). This was kind of surprising to me as I'd always heard Dell was the way to go, but it has kind of scared me off the brand.

Love my Sony laptop as well...

It runs great even after 3 years and sadly, a few "accidents", where it fell. The worst being I tripped as I fell down the stairs carrying (not in a case)... went down about half a staircase. The battery cover popped off (didn't break though) and the only thing that broke was a "foot" on it. At least I know this bugger is sturdy ;)

I had a Sony Vaio laptop and it was a piece of junk, IMO. Dumped it and got a Dell and have been happy with it. The Sony problems in models they made from 2002-2004 were that they overheated, shut down, and it was very expensive to fix the problem. They are probably better now, but it's too late for them/me. I'll stick with what works for me.

I agree that you will find people who hate and love every company. Personally, I love my Dell Inspiron 8600. When I need a part, they were quick to respond.

I have a Sony Vaio & within two months, the hard drive crashed completely. After opening it up, we discovered it had a Maxtor hard drive--we've had nothing but problems with Maxtor in the past. DH usually builds our systems, but I was impatient & wanted a system quickly. I replaced the hard drive with a Western Digital & haven't had a single problem since.

Bottom line is, unless you build your computer piece by piece & do heavy research on each item, you'll hear good & bad things about any system out there. Other than the hard drive issue, I have no complaints about Sony though.

I had my first Sony (desk top) for four years and never had a single problem. I loved the thing! I decided to replace it in April and have been so happy with my second Sony that I went out and bought a Sony lap top! So I've had three Sony's and totally love them all. I wouldn't get anything but a Sony! I have two Sony digital cameras and love them as well! In the past, I've owned Compaq Presarios (2), a Packard Bell, and a Hewlett Packard and all three of those gave me nothing but problems. None of them lasted me more than two years. But my Sonys have been perfect!

I have a Compac desktop and I want a lap top and can give this one to the boys so this post is awesome can you keep going. I am not going to use it for work (have no job, yet) just want it where I can be comfortable while on the puter, don't know the ins and outs, like how to hook it up, know how to work it tho. Will check the ones that you mentioned tho, thanks for the info. It appears they have many kids of Sony VAIO, which do you all have? Thanks :Pinkbounc

You can look in Consumer Reports (or their website) for ratings about the different computers/companies, their service, their product, etc. Very helpful.

I have a dell laptop that is GREAT....had it for 3.5 yrs. now looking to upgrade and the Dell Inspiron 6000 gets tops reviews from pcmag.com :flower:

I know it's stupid to say this as I limit myself from a whole product line, but I won't buy any Sony products because of the heavy hand they use for digital rights management for their music products.

Of course, I agree that there should be DRM, but not at the expense of my computer's security.

That's a different division of Sony... That's kind of like refusing to visit WDW because Disney owns some movie studios that produce R-rated movies.

Yeah, I know it's stupid, and it's a different division... It's even funnier because I could care less that they put DRM on songs and movies - I'm 100% for them protecting their rights. I put it down in that category of that cell phone commercial "sticking it to the man." I'm allowed to be a little nutso as a computer guy. :)

I wouldn't want to be in their position, that's for sure.
