I bought preferred annual pass to get great hotel rate at royal pacific....
said it came with free parking....
So I figured with free parking it pays for itself compared to buying Power pass.

but free parking is only at parks...
Royal Pacific charges $7 for self parking and $14 for valet per day.

How can these hotels get away with charging you to park at your own hotel?

Welcome to the real world. In most cities I've visited the hotels charge between $20 and $30 a day to park your car! The hotels have to pay for upkeep of their parking areas. It seems reasonable that those with cars pay for it,rather than tacking on an extra fee for all guests.

Universal's website states that the 2-park preferred annual pass provides "free self-parking each time you visit". Maybe they need to include a note that indicates the free parking is only for the parks, not the on-site hotels just so there's no room for assumption.

I've paid for parking at every hotel I've ever stayed at with the exception of a LaQuinta in Georgia. The most I've ever paid was $35 ( ) a night for parking at the Courtyard in San Francisco. Paying for parking isn't fun, but I don't like paying $30 to fill up my gas tank and $50 for an oil change either. Just gotta roll with it... :)

Disney in Orlando doesn't charge for parking but Disney in California does. Just about every hotel now charges for parking.

The annual pass isn't for the hotels so I guess that is why they don't feel the need to clarify. The annual pass is for the parks so free parking would be for the parks.

Royal Pacific charges a one time valet fee of $14, not per day. At least that is how it was the last time I was there, has it changed?

If that was the case, everyone would just use valet if they were staying more than 2 days. I think you got lucky because it should be charged per day.

I'm pretty sure that's not true... we used self-parking at the Grand Californian last June, and I would swear we were not charged for parking.

When we stayed there last year we used valet but also did not leave the resort or the parks at all. Therefore they only charged us a one time fee. Because they really only parked our car once and delivered it to us once. Maybe they charge it differently if you are leaving the hotel during your stay... I don't know.
BTW, the reason we used the valet was because it made more sense than self parking and paying a daily charge.
Now at the parks there is no charge to park if you are a passholder. There is a charge if you choose preferred parking, but it is a discounted rate.

You pay a $10 resort fee per day which includes your parking fee.

A couple of times I wasn't charged for parking at PBH.
Last week though was the best at Wyndham Palace they didn't charge the $11 per day valet or the $10 resort fee, only one $11 valet charge.
You usually pay one way or another. At the Peabody valet is complimentary when you stay on the club level.

We stayed at RP the month it opened. We were told that the resorts charged a parking fee because Universal required them to. The reasoning was that the guests would have payed to park at the theme parks. It really didn't make much sense to me. One night we returned to the hotel in one of the worst rainstorms I've ever seen to find no empty parking spaces whatsoever! We parked at the valet parking, and my DH went to the manager and told him if he had to pay $7 for parking there should be parking. They refunded our parking fees for the whole week.

I have to say that the Universal resorts are the only hotels I've ever payed to park.

I'll be staying over at the Marriot World Center next month and they charge $7 per night to park. I have also paid to park in hotel parking garages in big cities like Atlanta and Toronto.
