Were their estimates too low (it would take longer to decay?) or too high (shorter to decay?)

IMO, it's kind of creepy to think that in a mere 10,000 years post extinction, almost all proof of human existence will be gone.

marcie, how many miles do you walk each morning, do you go before you start work?
i used to do my walks at 5ish during warm weather.
cold weather i avoid it all except for curves

Right now we pretty regularly walk about 4ish miles. When there's not snow, we can walk on the bike trails (which aren't paved or plowed), so we try to go 5-6 miles, but now, walking over banks and piles of snow, 4 is enough. Takes as much time. Although today we managed to follow the plow a ways which made it easier. Unfortunately the plow had come on my street too, which mean when I got home spending another 15 minutes digging my driveway out again! My kids get on the bus around 7, get ready and walk from about 7:15 to 8:25ish, quick shower, then have to be at the HS each day to drive DS between there and the middle school after his HS classes end at 9:05. Come home - have an hour to hang with you homies (or do pesky things like errands, cleaning the house, laundry, etc.), then head to work!

Good Morning all off to work today but had to say that I TOO HAVE THAT GREEN RUG . Can't wait till Feb. we are getting rid of it and re-doing the masterbedroom Just bought our bedroom set and it comes 2/21 , Now we need a new rug ,new paint and well all the help we can get to get the stuff out of the room .

Okay - so what sub-cliques do we have on this thread?

1. The green carpet club! (Not to be confused with the red carpet club!)

2. The "I was born in 1966" club!

3. The "I celebrate my 20th anniversary in May of 08" club

4. The "I'm a Leo" club (I'm not a member of this one!)

The phone rang at 5:30am. School is closed for today. Huh? I checked the weather. Patchy freezing drizzle possible. Again, Huh? I turned on the local weather. We are the ONLY county in Georgia closed today.

So much for our built in emergency days. I think they only give us 2 of those. Methinks they might have pulled the trigger a bit early on this one.

Boy, here I guess after last night that 6 inches and still snowing isn't enough!

Morning all ... Barb, are we in for more bad weather? Going to have to check the forecast since both Mike and I work tonight. Speaking of work, it's annual appraisal time. It's a running joke with me. About 8 years ago or so one of my managers wrote in "Areas for Development" that "Jodie should learn more patience with those who are less competent and less intelligent than she is." (How is that for a back-handed compliment? ). Anyway, the running joke is that every manager I've ever had just copies the same statement verbatim year after year after year. I've never been able to shake it. I can't tell you the last time I told anyone off, but I can't seem to shake the same development suggestion. Can't wait to see if that's on there again this year. I have a new manager too.

I HATE that kind of comment! I've been hearing that about me (and my kids) for years as well. Like it's your fault for being more intelligent or quicker than the idiots you work with! (ok - can you see my bias coming through!)

I want to punch DHL in the face. Repeatedly. How in the bluest of Hades can a company be so poor at delivery???? I'm expecting a package to my dad's house. There was an attempted delivery, but the ticket said "call (name of person)" No tracking number, no additional info, nothing.
That DHL office was contacted and said person was asked for, but guess what---HE WAS NOT IN THAT DAY! Now nobody (me, dad, stepmom) have any idea where the package is or when it's supposed to be delivered.
I tried calling DHL this morning, but nobody had any idea what was going on.

First package I shipped at this job with DHL they lost completely. Luckily it was promotional material we were shipping a client and could be replaced, but the attitude was like "sorry we lost it, oh well!" Never use them again!

Ok, I'm in for Wednesday and Thursday for your wake up calls. Hopefully, MF is back on Friday because my big fat butt is sleeping in on Friday!

No green carpet here, but I do have a nasty brown shag in my basement!

Had some bad days here as well. DS12 had piano yesterday and all 3 boys had math team at a high school about 20 minutes away. Left work right on time and had told his piano teacher we'd try to be early so we could get to math team on time. Well, the normally 18 minutes drive took a full HOUR! Nope, we didn't make it to piano at all (and he has a competition Saturday so we have to find a time to make it up) and go to to math team barely on time in horrible driving.

Only to find that my 3 boys were 3 of the 4 kids from their high school to bother showing up! Even the teacher/coach didn't show! But they got 2 medals. Most of the other schools had full teams there so I'm not sure why we didn't!

Then this morning, DS14 obviously got up, showered, and laid back down to watch TV and fell asleep. Since I'd seen him awake, I didn't worry about it until about 2 minutes before the bus came and asked him if he had his gym clothes and he staggered down in his boxers. Had him throw clothes on, grabbed him gym clothes and pop tarts and threw him out the door while he whined non-stop!

Sigh - it has to get better from here!

only areas in my abode that have decent HW floors are the bedrooms. When we 1st moved in years ago, master BR had avocado green & yellow striped wall paper & shag carpet to match . Funds were short, so we decided to place our huge water bed over the carpet (think a pad) and tear up most of the rest; leaving carpet on each side of the bed.

fast forward....even now that we have a replacement/traditional mattress we haven't removed either the carpet or wall paper. we tried to strip the wall paper & the plaster came off; put an end to that bright idea. DH refuses to paint over it and i won't let him rip the plaster off the walls for fear it will become one of his unfinished projects.

neither of us shows signs of cracking, afraid i'll die (hopefully) years from now in bed and the rescue crew will make fun of my BRs decor.

i sent for certified copied of both DH & my dad's military discharge (DD-214); you need them to apply for various benefits (cruise discounts lol) & including surviving spouse in my mom's case.

got my dad's today, so shocked to see that earned stars, ribbons, medals & citations a mile long . Evidently, he was a turret gunner aboard the USS Raymond during WWII, knew he served aboard a battleship & that was it refused to discuss it other than to say war wasn't like you see in the movies

I'm requesting replacement issues

My dad was the same way about not talking about his time at war. He almost never talked about his time in the Navy and never ever about anything specific from his tour of duty.

the concrete we have used in the last 100 years has more water in it.
cheaper for building more and bigger profits.
the concrete of roman times still stands.
partial amount of the Colosseum still stands.
gladiator areas have seats and walls still standing.

not all concrete decays.
and in the roman and greek era dynasty, many buildings still are in tact with very little updo by modern man.

brick roads do not deteriorate at the pace the show stated.
streets where i grew up in a german town still have the same bricks with no upgrading.

there are houses in southern illinois that have been abandoned over 100 years ago. still partially up.
my grandparents house of wood and stone still has 3 outer walls standing.
if plaster was used like in the roman and greek era, walls can last.

our driveway is concrete. it was poured 1979.
it has cracks but no overgrowth.
if i did nothing to the cracked areas and not weed them, it would take longer than 10 years as depicted in the show last night, to deteriorate.

take into account the weather/climate of an area when you factor in time to crumble period.

for new york, i could guess the closer to the ocean would help the demise of decline. i would give it a lot more time than the 10,20 50 years used in the show.

i would think that so many of the buildings would not burn rapidly as shown last night due to the modern building ordinances for fire protection we have on the books.

i'll end here, i have more thoughts.

but, i am looking forward to the new show of UFO in february.

It does suck that you are having problems with your delivery, but it isn't your tax dollars paying for it. The Post Office is supported by postage sales alone. Remember, my day job is in the Maintenance Dept at the Reading PA Post Office. We're technically part of the Federal Government, but self sufficient. Since 1970 anyway.

Nothing beats good old southern gospel.

The people are mostly my family (Mom, Dad, Susan, Darryl, Carol), but there are a few pictures grouped together in the middle of it of my circle of friends. One of my best memories from Dad's memorial was something a friend said (Donald, who shows up in some of the pictures... poker night at my parents house was always his favorite). He walked up to me and said, "Did anyone call him anything but 'Dad'? I don't ever remember calling him 'Mr.' or anything else other than 'Dad'." That was the way it was. My parents were always Mom and Dad to all my friends. Priceless.

Anyway, don't cry. If you are tearing up, then Lori will be shedding buckets when she catches up with the thread. I really have tons of happy memories of my dad. I wasn't ready to see him go... and he was gone so quickly... but my only regret is that Daniel won't have any real memory of him. He was such a fantastic Granddad to my boys.
