jodie - tonight's other choice cuts: New Order-Blue Monday & Pretenders-Back on the Chain Gang. 2 of my middle son's downloads popped up too - a Kid Rock & rap ditty, Rock Star? and Darude-Sandstorm:eek: techno; guess i'm rubbing off on him.:lmao:

elmer - way better to regroup @ home, is sis able to eat anything?

gotta luv these boards:thumbsup2

i believe i managed to offend a captain today...

a captain of WDW boat, without even trying:confused3

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1611870

think of it as long-distance, back seat driving:laughing: another thing we were blessed with in the garden of eden.

of course, i still think i'm right;)

when i inquired of one of the captains last trip what time the last boat returned from the Contemporary to WL; i was told 1/2 hour after the park closes. He proceeded to tell me of the many stranded drunks every evening who lingered just a bit too long & had to call a cab (must've had that look about me).

tricia, that's a tough question about having your son go with the gifted program or not.

i'm certified to teach K - 12 and jr. college. have taught in the gifted programs before in elementary level. each state and school district set up their gifted program differently. i don't know how your school does it.

in our district for elementary levels, the gifted break off to a different school once they are in 4th grade. the school only takes 15 of each grade level (4th, 5th, 6th graders) each year.

for 1-3rd grade, the advanced/gifted targeted students are pulled out of class for group activities with about 2 others for about 3 hours each week.

they are taught outside the box way for math, science and writing.

the students that are targeted in the district are the ones that have the staight A's and higher IQ scores.
at the 3rd grade level, the students that are selected are interviewed with the parents and teachers to enter into the program. if a student had a weak 2nd grade score but substantially high score for 1st and 3rd grades, they could be included.

we have 6 feeder elementary schools that are qualified to submit test scores and recommendations for the gifted program for 4th grade.
students can not have an IQ score of lower than 120 to qualify. grades have to exceed the standards and average for the state.
when the kid meets those qualifications, they can interview for the gifted school.
usually all that are invited do go to it.

2 of my boys went thru the gifted program. i didn't let the other one follow in the footsteps as he was not a self started. he qualified but i didn't let him go into it. i believed it would not be in his best interests at that time.

if the gifted program motivates and challenges the student, then go for it.
a student can get bored if they are advanced and the regular classroom teacher does not encourage to work ahead on their own.

kids usually catch up and reach the same educational level by christmas break of 3rd grade time. that is why our district does not separate the gifted group at a different school until 4th grade begins.

mac - forgot to ask, did they downscale the "special" fireworks to a 180 degree display instead of the awesome 360 that had last year???

recently, read on another post that the MVMCP ones were cut back last year.

ixnay on the tommorrowland terrace viewing tip:rolleyes1 :lmao: tinkerbell scared the heck out of DH 1st time we sat there & she flew over his head.

Hey Mac - just wanted to give you a heads up that we'll be at Six Flags next Saturday (Oct 27). It'll just be me and a gaggle of kids, so I'd love some adult companionship if you have any time in your day. Actually I'm sure I won't see DS15 and his girlfriend at all, but may be stuck with the 2 14 year old boys (or maybe not!). We'll probably get there at opening again (well, since I'm bringing 2 not-of-my-kids I can't guarantee how early we'll be!) and stay until 3 or so. I know we want to hit a couple big coasters and at least the hypnotist show if they have that again this year. Let me know if any of this works for you!

Lori and Tricia - we've gone through the gifted route here too. I have to agree with Barb (for you at least Tricia) that it's early enough that it will be easy to make friends and a full day thing might be what he'd need. Of course you know your kids best, and each kid is different.

All 3 of my kids were "gifted" to some extent. However, the oldest was more an "I know everything" type kid who enjoyed showing off in a regular classroom. He did pullout and that probably worked best for him. Middle kid is more a "oh, I'm probably wrong" kid and putting him in a gifted class (especially full time) would have just destroyed his confidence. It happened for a year in middle school (we weren't given a choice at that point) and he was okay, but was really glad the following year when he was no longer in the program.

However my youngest (who you've all heard me brag about here - the musician, knitter, etc.!) was obviously gifted from the get-go. He was reading, multiplying, etc. at 3 and was generally able to do anything academically that his brothers could (who were 2-3 years older) - and they were among the top in their classes. I knew back then that a regular class wouldn't work for him and he ended up attending a different district in order to go to a full time gifted program. Starting last year in 6th grade, he's been taking classes at the high school. I'm very grateful that we were where we were for him to be able to have that opportunity because he would have just been bored out of his mind in a regular class.

So I guess my input is - you know your kids. If it doesn't sound like the teachers are that impressed with the program (Lori), I'd probably pass on it too. If you're just concerned about the social side (Tricia), I'd probably give it a try. He may find he has more in common with kids who are a bit "quicker" and make even better friends than he would have otherwise. Find out the rules - see if you can always pull him if it doesn't work out!

bubba's mom, yes i did see that .
also noticed how you posted my countdown for me...........:dance3:

marcia, sure, i can meet you on the 27th.

my friend is susan rosen who does the hypnotist show.
this will be her 11th year there.

they moved her to the sw territory as that place holds 1500 in seating.
the place they had her last year only holds up to 900 at a time.

the new show this year is a musical and i don't know if it is my thing.
kids seem to love it.
it doesn't really have a story line but has ghouls and halloween type scareactors that sing and dance on the stage.
some people love it as it is new this year.

they still have love at first fright this year.
i went last sunday to meet up with friends there for a short time.

that's the beauty of living so close to it. i can get out there quickly and stay for a few hours then go home and return back again at night.

i'll be in touch with you before that saturday.

i leave town this friday morning. will be home the next wednesday.

something i learned which i really did know but put it off.
you know when you have to do something and you don't have your heart in it so you drag your feet in getting around to taking care of it....kwim???

i made the car ressie tonight. should have made it yesterday when i got my plane ticket.

this evening that same car i need to rent is now $59. plus tax per day.

yea, the closer you get to the date needed, it jumps up in price.

i didn't unpack one of my suitcases.
maybe tomorrow i should look in it and see what i still have in there.

keisha, yea, disney dummy downed the fireworks of hallowishes this year.

i hope i haven't over looked anyone here.

wressing, so good to see you here. i know, i owe you a pm. will get to that before i leave town again.

tricia, everyone here inside the box on this thread sends you this.. :grouphug: :grouphug:

we are here for you. when you hurt, we hurt.

and that goes the same for all of the homies here.
if you need us, let us know either by pming someone here or posting it on the thread.

rose, your dad is in my prayers.

i had a super time with todd.
where is he now? he was sick on sunday and couldn't meet up at the park that day. did get to see him on thursday. we did the houses and had a blast.

are you all catching zzzzzzz's now?

i'll be back later for the card game.
i'll be wearing my poker face tonight.

Tricia - It sounds like your school system has a pretty good G/T program. It would definetly be easier for him at that young of an age to start out with a full class on a daily basis. Good luck with you decision.

I can not believe that you have to pay that much for coverage. That is rediculous.

You just have to wonder sometimes what the nurses/doctors are thinking. Why in the world would they release a patient for rush hour? Idiots! I hope Carol is feeling better being at home.

Thanks for the update on DWS. He didn't ever really seem to fit in, did he?

Lynne - Hope you are feeling better by the time you leave. Have a fabulous trip!!!

Janet - I am really starting to believe that these genious children of ours is all because of our vacation habits! There sure are a lot of them.

Mac - What do you mean the old one. You look marvelous! Thanks for posting the pics.

Penny - You looked great too! Thanks for posting your pics.

Barb - That guy looks kinda creepy!

The Tomorrow Land Terrace is a great place to watch the fireworks from, espcially if you get there early enough to get a table up against the railing. It gives you a nice viewing area to sit down and watch.

Oh and I told you very little on the step-monsters background. There has been a lot that we have found out to cause us to worry. And she is better then her kids. Lets just say it is very disturbing & embarassing.

I love the history of the Garden of Eden. That really eplains it all doesn't it?!?

Jodie - Someone called you out for responding on Tricia's thread??? You know jealousy is really a sad thing. We invite everyone in to play with us. Sorry they don't feel worthy of being a part of the special comraderie we have here with the homies!

Marcie - Thanks for the input on the G/T program. Ally says she wants to do it. I will ask some more questions next week when we go back to school and then decide from there. At least I know I can pull her out if we don't like it.

Mac - I just wanted to thank you again for getting this thread started. I can't believe how special you guys have all become to me. As you said, when you guys hurt I hurt. When you are all excited about something I am too. Thanks for making this home for us.

Night everyone!

thanks lori for the kind words.

in the big world we live in, we need friends to listen to us and care about our needs. my hope is that everyone that comes to yak on the thread will feel they are special to all of us. some post daily, some once in awhile. when a homie returns to the thread, we all are happy. yea lynne for finding your way back home to us.... you too wressing...

i think i was the oldest in that dis group for the mnsshp meet. that's why i said what i said. some of those gals were in their 20's. it was a 16 year old teenage girl that started the thread and got us all together. she did a super job with it.

came back to tuck you all into bed.
sweet sleep........

ps, roll call in the morning.
bring a note from home if you are tardy

Good Morning All!

who is next in posting pics of themselves?

I did it, and the sytem did not fail, crash, or burn:rolleyes1

Morning All! Don't know why but I have been up for about an hour already and didn't go to bed until well past midnight.

I hope everyone has a fantastic day!

Mac - You sure didn't look like the oldest in the group. You look great!

Oh well. what the heck, here's a pic of me at my 2nd job as a sound tech at a local club. As you can see from my Postal Service shirt, I just came from my day job!

Morning all!!

Sorry for not posting yesterday......I have to say mac, you look absolutely fantastic!! Conrats on 40 lbs in 3 months!! I had no clue you lost that much - excellent job!!!

Barb - Loooove the joke....will have to cut and paste that one :lmao:

Tricia - hoping Carol is resting more comfy at home.....continue to think of her often

- as far as the gifted program goes, Kbean was reading at a second grade level just before entering kindergarten. We had her tested at the recommendation of the preschool teacher. We never proceeded with any gifted programs with her. She is still very smart as her Terra Nova Testing has shown, but she is so disorganized. Her mind still goes a mile a minute, she can hold a conversation with adults easier than with her peers and her comprehension is still WAY up there, however her school work is that of an average student at best :confused3 don't know what happened. :confused3 I guess its not cool to be smarter than your friends.

Yesterday my littlest bean (Frank) turned 6.....not my baby anymore - he is my big guy now:guilty: :guilty: He was funny and made me measure him on the basement door (all the kids heights are there for the last 2 years) and he was all excited that he grew a good bit from last year.

Lori & Barb- I don't have a video of him doing his Tank dance yet, I have to take one.....then I will surely share with you all ;)

Penny - GREAT pics. I agree with Katie, its nice to put a face with a name. It makes it way more personal, especially since we are a nice little family here!

Mike - one more day :woohoo: :woohoo: :dance3: :woohoo: :woohoo: :yay:

Lori - you are so sweet and kind. Anyone can tell that you genuinely care about everyone here - Thanks for that - you always have a few encouraging words and it makes you special. :flower3:

rose - how is Dad? I hope he gets the treatment sooner rather than later. Thoughts and Prayers for him

lynne - take airborne, zicam or Cold-eeze.....Hoping you feel much better really soon!!!

jodie - got yer pm :thumbsup2 you are da bomb!!!now where is that trippie??!!?? Can't wait to see what is new with our health plan.....should be getting a packet really soon. The company has switched carriers and its supposed to be better with more docs, specialists, etc - yeah, we shall see:rolleyes1

janet - any new additions to the Halloween display? perhaps a pic of the finished decor is in order??!!?? I may have missed it, but is everything in order for your cruise? Did they tell you where your port is going to be?

marcie - taking a gaggle of teens to an amusement park? Whoa, what a good woman and even better - you will be the "Cool Mom"!! Take lots of pics and let us know how it goes :cool1:

here ya go.....its me and dh and two of the beans as the oldest is taking the picture (try not to be too afraid :scared1: ):
