All this time I thought that the Captain's Gala was on Sunday night?
Was the Captain's Gala always Thursday or am I losing my mind? I could have sworn I saw somewhere in print the Captains' Gala was Sunday!!
And then I found this on Barbara's website that the rotation is:

Sat: Rotation
Sun: Rotation
Mon: Rotation
Tues: Tropicali
Wed: Around the World
Thur: Captain's Gala
Fri: Best of Master Chef

Okay, I'm a spaz! I have to go tell the family that I was wrong now, LOL

Hmmmm...... just took a quick look at the 2/21/04 Navigator on Barb's site, and it looks like the Captain's Gala is Sunday night (formal night).

I was on the 3/6 Eastern and I am pretty sure it was on Thursday night. I'll check my navigators tonight.

I just got back from the 3/20 Eastern and Sunday was formal night and I beleive that Thursday was Captain's Gala.. and semi formal..I will check my navagators when i get home from work.

I'll tell you honestly: on the 3/20 Eastern I could differentiate formal and semi-formal nights in my mind and in dress, but for me the Captain's Gala was a non-event. I have no clue which night it was or what distinguished it  That doesn't bother me; it's simply the way it was for us. Sunday night (formal night) they were passing out free drinks and the captain was available for formal pictures, with many other officers out and about for conversation...maybe that was the Captain's Gala?

3-20-04 Eastern cruise: Formal night was Sunday night. Captain's Gala was Thursday night and was semi-formal. I remember because the lobster was served the night of the Captain's Gala.

See, I thought the Captain's Gala night was supposed to be the MORE formal night of the two. Interesting.:scratchin

So, Sunday is FORMAL night, Thursday is the Captain's Gala and it's considered semi formal? But from what you folks are saying, there is really no big difference between the two?
Thanks so much for the responses! :D

I just noticed on Barb's website that on the Western - the Captain's Gala is listed as "Semi-Formal".
On the Eastern - the Captain's Gala is "Formal"

Tink we are going on the 5-1 Eastern Magic cruise. I'd be happy to post as soon as we get home what night was what if you'd like.

We were on the 2/7/04 Eastern Magic and formal night was Sunday night, where you could meet the Captain and have pictures taken with him. Thursday night was semi-formal and the menu was Captain's Gala. So maybe you confused meeting the Captain with the Captain's Gala menu? In which case, you are absolutely correct, meeting the Captain is the more formal night.

As to your question about the difference between formal and semi-formal...I think many (but certainly not all) people were a little bit more dressed up on formal night than semi-formal, but of the people I noticed (I will admit that I really wasn't looking around much) pretty much everyone who was dressed up on either night would've looked appropriately dressed up on the other night as well. Our friend's dh wore his tux both nights and looked fabulous; my dh wore a suit both nights (with a slightly white shirt on formal night, striped shirt for semi) and looked great both times. Other folks didn't dress up for one or the other or both, but it really didn't register with me; I mostly know that because dh told me so!
