Someone robs your home , they get caught, the judge decides you get to pick their punishment, what do you decide?

That they do community service picking up trash in the city until the cost to repair the damage is covered by being paid min wage. I also believe that finical crimes where someone steals millions should be treated the same way. A life of picking up garbage.

Might actually make them think twice if the wife is sitting in jail with them (in the next cell over)

I am a fan of "punishment fits the deterrent" rather than the normal though of "punishment fits the crime." Fitting the punishment to the crime obviously is not working to deter the crime. If you were going to get a slap on the wrist, it's not much of a deterrent. But if your body was going to end at the wrist if you did said crime, you might think before doing so.

Depending on how much they stole and how much damage they caused, something between two years and ten years in prison.

I don't get involved. Same reason I didn't file a claim for restitution from the guy who broke into my truck and stole my cell phone. He got arrested.......based on my cell phone records......about 2 hours after he broke into my truck. I got the phone back, but it cost me $250 to fix the damage to the door on my truck, and I moved on. I stayed out of it on the advice of many in the criminal justice system. This guy knows where I live. I make him pay for the damage when he gets out he comes back to get even. No thanks. Moving on.
