Somebody that can sew...please help

I have a question first.....Does the person you would be buying the sewing machine for have any sewing experience at all? If not, I would definitely go with the more basic model (the second one) for now since something with a million options just might be overwhelming....however, that said....you know the person and how that person reacts to new projects/learning new things. If they are not easily intimidated then the first machine will perform a lot of functions and can take them a long way in the art of sewing.

How much do think this person is going to sew? I think the more expensive machine woudl be really overwhelming to a beginner and unless they are going to use it a while lot for a variety of sewing projects, I'd go with the 2nd one.

I have been sewing for many, many years and I would go with the first machine (Project Runway). The price is quite reasonable and it has a lot of nice features. I would also suggest they sign up for one lessons at their local fabric store.

I would go with either the Project Runway one, or this one: http://www.amazon.com/Brother-Affor...id=1353875750&sr=8-1&keywords=brother+cs6000i

I have the Brother CS6000i and love it. I am 28 and teaching myself how to sew. I would go with one right around the $150 mark because you will get features that you can use as your skill level rises. They are simple enough to teach yourself on, but fancy enough to do more complex things if she decides she loves it. It will grow with you. When you think about it, $150 is not a lot of money to buy a machine that will last for many years (with proper care).

Wow, I just bought this machine on Black Friday online at Walmart and it arrived today:). I am so excited my current machine is 20 yrs old, looking forward to using it. Great to read your review.:flower3:

I dont sew, but I bought my dd14 one from Walmart on Black Friday. It was only $49 and we waited for an hour for them to unwrap the packaging (it was only available in store). Just saw that it is available online now for their Cyber Monday sale...go figure! Just in case you are buying it for a teen like I did...the price is great and it had good reviews, plus a DVD with instructions (which we need:rotfl:)

There were lots of ladies (that sew) waiting to get one of these in the store and they all said it was good :)

Brother is a fantastic sewing machine company. Their machines are excellent and user friendly. I'd go with the Runway model because it has 50 built in stitches and would have more options for creativity.

I have the first one, and bought it 2 years ago. I had no idea how to sew and did just fine with it out of the box. There is a learning curve to the stitches, automatic needle threader, bobbin threading, etc. but I found Youtube to be a huge help!

1) Go for the better one.
2) Once they learn, they will want to try other stitches.
3) You can never have too many options.
4) Especially since they will probably keep it for a long time.

NOTE: Like a computer,
. . . you can never have too much RAM
. . . you can never have too big of a hard drive
. . . you can never have too much speed

I like the first one better. I prefer digital. I have to replace my third machine, and this looks fine even for me.
