I SOOOOOO feel like crying right now.

Detroit Zoo to close

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!! :sad1: :furious: :sad2:

Any thoughts??

I didn't know the zoo was doing that bad. :( They kept it so well kept. I LOVED the way the animals could walk freely. Unlike the Toledo zoo...

They thought ppl raised a stink about when they closed down Belle Isles stuff??! lol Just wait till ppl protest this.

That STINKS!! I was looking forward to taking my son there some day. I remember my dad taking me there as a kid. :( :( :( I thought it was such an amazing place - I can't believe it's going to close.

You can come up to the Toronto Zoo which is great but I know it's not the same. I would be furious if they closed Toronto. wE love it there.

Maybe if enough people raise a fuss they'll keep it open??

You did not read the headline correctly: COULD close. It does not say for sure that it will close, just that it will not be in the City of Detroit's hands, but Royal Oak's instead. The article did not say it WAS closing!

Ahemm.... On Channel four yesterday. they said they were already planning to be be closed as of tomorow (today)

:( :( :(

This really upsets me. So much for my once a week excursions with the kids.

Great. Maybe the can turn it into another casino.

:( Have some great memories from there when I was little (many many years ago) And had hoped to take the kiddos there someday. :(

Yep, I heard it too & this morning too. Zoo employees were supposed to receive their pink slips today. My opinion is that if Kuame Kilpatrick would stop squandering Detroit's money, this would never have happened. But he's too busy throwing lavish parties with strip teasers & buying his wife fancy SUV's on the City's budget.

The last time I was at the Detroit Zoo was a few years ago. The animals (whatever ones they had that day) all looked like they were on their their last leg(s)! To me, it had really changed from when I used to go years ago. While I am saddened, I'm certainly not surprised.

After all these years of being there, it surprises me that they are closing it. :(

What are they thinking? The Detroit Zoo is really, really nice. It's a lot nicer than the Pittsburgh Zoo, and I think it's nicer than the Columbus (OH) Zoo and just as nice as the Indianapolis Zoo. At least, the Toledo Zoo is pretty close, and it's a pretty decent zoo for the size of that city. Is this an indication of where the rest of the city zoos are headed?

That was my first thought... It's funny that we didn't hear ANYTHING about this until the vote...

Hmmmm.... which do we need better... something for the entire family to enjoy, or fancy hats and Escalades for the city council members.... :scratchin

HOw many people in Michigan have had their pictures taken in front of the bear fountain at the Zoo?

Frankly, I am not a big fan anymore of the Detroit Zoo. It's been unkempt for awhile and the staff there just doesn't care. The picnic gounds have been nasty and my DH's company no longer even bothers doing an annual picnic there.

I have fallen in love with the Toldedo Zoo. It's much cleaner, user friendly and the workers there actually WORK and don't chat on cell phones with their friends. It is also more kid friendly with the exhbits and hands on stuff at the musuem.

Wow, I'm shocked of the poor opinions of the Detroit Zoo...I have had an anual pass for a few years, and go to the Zoo about once a week when the weather permits.

I have NEVER had a poor experience there. Everyone is friendly and helpful, and the animals are great. My son LOVES the polar bear exhibit and DD loves the Snow Monkeys. They always have tons on volunteers (at least during the week) giving out info on the animals and working on the flower gardens and exhibits.

I am so disappointed. :(

I'm confused by "Unlike the Toledo Zoo...." many of the aniimals at the Toledo Zoo walk freely. Those of us here in the Toledo area don't have much to crow about but we do have our zoo. It's one of the top zoos in the country. Doesn't look like much from the road, but it's awesome. I can name 2 dozen species that "walk freely". When I was a small child most of the animals were caged, but now that is rare.

I remember going to the Detroit Zoo as a child and have taken my kids there. I live near Grand Rapids now and the zoo here sucks. Too small, takes about an hour at best. Guess we'll be going to Chicago more often now.

I agree, as a Royal Oaker and my home is less then 2 miles from the zoo I think it is a good place. :goodvibes We enjoy our weekly visits there in good weather. I have no complants about it. The animals are well taken care of and in good health. Nor do I bash other zoos. :teeth: :thumbsup2

I have to agree with Mishetta about Kuame (Detroit current joke of major.)

However I do not see this happening. It is all a threat by a very poor potliction and Oakland Co and Royal Oak (and the people of it and the surrounding area) will not let it happen. I will be one of those people protesting loudly, writing letters and making my voice heard (along with almost every other person I know in this community. :)

Big news today in Metro Detroit. Lot's of opinons, but no one wants it closed.

I still don't think it will, but in all honeslty I think Detroit should loose it. They voted to close it, I don't think they really should have it anymore!

I plan to go to a rally on Thursday about it at the zoo.

I don't see what the big ta-do was of them (city council) not giving over power to a city/company that could take care of it.. :confused3

Seems like they're too proud to see any other perspective... Jeeze... Maybe they will get their heads out of there prosterior regions..
