Some photos from my recent Disney Wonder Alaskan Cruise (more photos in page 2, 3, 4 and 5).

I have a Sony A99 and I used Zeiss 24-70, 70-200G and 16mm fisheye for the trip. I mostly used the 24/70 though.

We did Harv and Marv, 9 of us and got the private boat named Alaskan. We were surrounded by 3 sets of whales, all playing and flapping around us. It was amazing. Even the captain and the boat guide said they have never seen the whale come this close before.
Was the 15 minutes' allotted time at the glacier visitor center sufficient for you to see Mendenhall Glacier? I can't tell if there's a way to get on the glacier, or whether the visitor center is simply a viewing point across from the glacier? I'd like to walk around there, if possible, but I don't know if we can get on the glacier or whether we can only see it from the visitor center and maybe 15 minutes that Harv and Marv's allots to it is sufficient. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

When they take you there with their shuttle, you have an option to take another shuttle back and would have to pay for it. If you just want photos, 15 minutes is enough. If you want to hike to the waterfall, then you will probably need to take your own shuttle back. You won't be able to walk on the glacier. I'll upload some photos soon.

When you say that we have the option to take another shuttle back and would have to pay for it, do you mean that we would have to pay for a different shuttle (not Harv and Marv's) if we want to stay beyond the 15-minutes of allotted time? We are scheduled for a 10 a.m. boat tour, so I'm not sure if they'll take us to the Glacier visitor center before or after the tour. If before, I guess we won't have the option of being able to stay longer than 15 minutes.

Yes, you will have to pay for your own shuttle if you want to stay longer. You might want to contact them and request they drop you off at the end of the tour if you decide to stay longer.

Here are some photos that I took at the Mendenhall glacier. If you walk down a ramp on the right side, you can go all the way down to the water and the view there is spectacular. It's a 2 minute walk from the shuttle drop off area.image.jpg image.jpgimage.jpg

Great pic of the whale fluke, for a moment I thought it was my whale. :) But I checked the Juneau catalog and alas it wasn't. It would have been great if it was!
BTW I didn't see this whale in the catalog, but I'm on my phone so couldn't study it well. If its a new whale to the area and you have the exact location of where the picture was taken you can submit it to be included in the identification catalog.

How do I go about doing that?
I hope this comment was to me, if not, I apologize. :o Go to http://www.juneauflukes.org/ from here you can click Juneau Catalog to see the identification pictures they already have. If you don't see a match, they have contact information on the site, just contact them and ask them about submission. Fifth row down from the top, number 221 is my whale. :D

Thank you. I uploaded my photo to them. Hopefully, it was a never seen before whale.

WOW, thank you for posting the pictures.
A sister and her husband, a couple that are very dear friends, DW and I will be cruising Alaska next year. I was already very excited to go when we reserved our cruise; these pictures make me want to go even more. According to my countdown app only 318 days to go. We booked it over a year out.

Don't let the kids ages keep you from doing it! We were on the same cruise and my almost 2 year old had an absolute blast! She loved dancing with the characters and meeting them. She may have had a better time than the 9 year old! My nephews are 5 and 8 and had a great time in Alaska as well!

LOVE your picture! DS and I are going in May. DS will be 2 years old. He can't get in the pools, so I thought it was a great time for us to go on an Alaskan cruise! I can't wait to get a picture of DS with Mickey and Minnie. Your LO's picture with them is absolutely adorable!!

OP, thank you for sharing those beautiful pictures!

I assume the whale shots were with the 70-200? Were all the shots at 200mm? Or were they wider?
I'm packing my camera bag now... My plan is my 300/4 prime as my only telephoto option (plus teleconverters). I'm a little scared of not being wide enough, but I'm guessing the telephoto reach will get me more shots than I'll lose on the wide end. And I'm not going to lug my 70-200/4 and my 300/4.

Actually, all my whale shots were shot with 24-70. I never really used my 70-200 except for a few shots on Tracy Arm day. Personally, I would not even bother with the 70-200.
