Solar Storm & Computers/Cells/Power?

Does anyone know exactly what problems the current solar storm can cause with computers??? The news hasn't been too helpful on this. They've told us that cell phone service could be interrupted & the power grid could go down.....but when it came to computers, the only comment I've heard is "it could cause problems with computers."

Are we supposed to keep them off, simply back up all data (never a bad idea anyway), or perform some sort of voodoo ritual to keep them safe?

I think it disruptive possibly only to maybe communicationsbetween computers, as a result of possible disruption of communication means. I do not think a computer itself is in any way in harm's way.

Thanks, Dan. I'd seen that link (I tried a Google search before posting, but didn't come up with much.) & read the info at ABCNews too. I wasn't sure if they were being deliberately vague in print or the whole thing was just another doom-and-gloom-end-of-the-world news report.

Although I can't figure out how, this site says the last one caused computers to crash.

Being in PA you should be fine anyways because the majority of the storm will hit canada near washington state, but you will be able to see the arorus borialous (sp?) in PA

Yeah, I read about the areas that are supposed to most affected, too.....something about the igneous rock. That's why I was so curious - our local news made a big deal out of it. I was surprised they even bothered to report it, considering how much air time they're giving the federal probe into Mayor Street.
