Sofa/sectional

What brand do you recommend? Need something that will hold up with 2 kids, a dog and 4 declawed cats (back only).

I know we don't want pillow back. I don't want the cushions to sag after only a few months.

in 1999 we bought a flex-steel sectional. It had a sleeper and two recliners on the ends. It has a big pillow back design but it's attached. It is now in our basement. The cushions have held up, seats, everything. It was a wonderful couch. Hubby decided we needed a new couch, he constantly fell asleep on it, would mow the lawn and come in and sit down on it (sweaty and nasty) so it really needed to be reupholstered. So we went shopping. Ended up at Sofa Select. Bought what appeared to be a nice set, with the attached pillow back. These have pulled away from the sofa. They still look nice after 3 years but definitely not the quality of the flex-steel. When I decide to replace these (sooner rather than later), I will find where they are selling flex-steel around here. We bought it from a flex-steel store which is no longer there, but the brand is still being sold.

(ETA: I have three boys, two dogs and had one cat. The sectional went through moves to three houses and from my youngest being a toddler until three years ago. Now they see the boys and all their friends using them for sleep overs and video-gaming. It had seen a lot of abuse. Whereas the newer couch has seen less and did not hold up as well.)

Also, the family I am babysitting for have Smith Brothers of Indiana. I do like their couches. They seem to pretty sturdy but very comfortable. The dad is very tall and the couches are deep so he can sit comfortably. I'm short (5'2") and I don't feel like Alice.

I also am in the market for a new couch/sectional. I am wondering what pillowback is? Does anyone have a picture? I want something that holds up really well and doesn't sag.

To me a pillow back is the back of the sofa is just pillows. They can be removed and move around. The other option are still pillows but they are attached to the sofa.

Pillow back, attached or not, is no guarantee it won't sag. Quality and a company that stands behind their product should figure largely in the decision.

I will say our flex-steel did sag after a few months. I called, they sent someone out to fix/restuff it. There were no problems after that (I had forgotten about this happening).

One bonus for an unattached pillowback is they should be slipcover-like. You aren't supposed to, but in a pinch if you needed to, you could take it off and clean them. If they do sag, you can restuff them easier. Our attached pillowback that did sag, was a bear to restuff. The recliner had to be laid back as far as it could go, to reveal the zipper. Then trying to get it in was work for a contortionist. It was fun watching, felt sorry for the guy who had that job.

I have come to the conclusion that our disposible society does not make products to last longer than 5-7 years. I have spent LOTS of money on furniture and appliances and then also done it on the cheap. Our family room furniture is used EVERY day. Our most recent purchase is a Basset leather sofa and chair with matching ottoman. It was very expensive and has held up pretty well for almost 5 years. The leather color is starting to wear off in several places, looking worn. It think this has worn better than our last recliner purchased from Bob's Discount Furniture, but will probably start looking real bad in another 2 years or so.
Here's what I'm getting at: The next time I have to buy furniture for this room, I will probably go the cheaper route and just plan on replacing it every 5 years.

My parents bought a Lane sectional several years ago and it is one of the best peices of furniture I've ever seen. Super comfy and has withstood years of abuse from dogs and grandkids and my fairly heavy family. It's been retired to the sunroom, but is still everones favorite furniture to sit on.

JC Penny was carrying the Flex Steel brand, I don't know if they still do.

We ended up buying our sofa from a small store in our town. They would customize what I wanted, it was cheaper than the nationally advertised brands and made in our area. I love it! We have had it for over a year, it looks brand new. Nothing damages it, not teenage girls with makeup during a sleep over, a standard poodle lounging on it, nothing. So look around your area for that small, overlooked shop and stop in. You can always just leave if you don't like what you see.
