Soda and Fruit Juices Should be Banned

Picking out a handful of items and saying that food was processed back then isn't really an argument. It's like finding some outliers and saying that's the norm.

What percentage of groceries sold in the 70s were processed versus today? That's the metric I'm talking about.

Easily 75% of the food items sold in supermarkets in the 70s were processed. Probably the same as today.

This is where we need to get to:

We just have to make sure that the robots don't mess it up! 😁

I don't think it's activity related. The amount of exercise you have to do to offset diet is huge. For example, one can of soda is equivalent to 2-3 miles of walking. We're consuming too much. And not all calories are equal. And the way our bodies processes certain calories changes as we age. The science is too complex for the mainstream consumer.
But it's simple enough to be boiled down to a 7 minute Youtube video? OK.

Personally I ate like crap the first 50 years of my life. Lots of processed food, fast food, junk food, etc. For the first 40-45, it wasn't an issue. Then I started gaining weight. I didn't change what I was eating, but my job changed to become more sedentary. My lifestyle did also. So, between diet, physical exertion, and age, only one thing stayed the same.

Most people are typically just making decisions by eating on autopilot, directed only by hunger and taste (and cost).

Even if you say the physiology behind all this is too complex, you still sum it up by saying "we're consuming too much". I think most consumers have a rudimentary understanding that eating too much of what's bad is not good for their health, especially in the long-term. But in that moment, they're primarily looking to satisfy short-term cravings.

While that is true, I think activity levels do play into the general lifestyle. I mean, as a kid, I could watch TV and snack, but I couldn't ride my bike and snack at the same time! My body wouldn't want to anyway. So while it's not really an equation of burning calories, it does play a role.

The biggest issue is definitely just having too much of this stuff. I've alwyas been the type who can have one cookie, but I know a lot of people who will unthinkingly have three or four, maybe more. It's normal to them.

Yet you, and a random youtube video are able to explain it to us perfectly. mmmkkkk

The body processes different types of food in different ways as we age. You can get away with eating badly when younger, but then the processes change and the impacts are felt. That video is a shorten version of a nearly two and half hour video. I doubt anyone here is going to watch it or read the research by the guy being interviewed. And as we have learned over the last couple of years, people aren't good with science especially as it changes over time. A lot of different studies are discussed.

Here's the full discussion:

and the show notes that breaks down the science more:

I'm telling you. The average person isn't going to consume this much information or spend the time trying to figure it out.

I simply said to ban soda and fruit juice. The science is pretty clear that they're both really, really bad for you especially as you age.
Which is it? Is the science too complex for "mainstream consumers" to understand as you said a little while ago, or pretty clear?

If fructose alone is the problem, we aslo have to get rid of a ton of vegtables and fruits too. Excess fructose a problem yes. But for most people fructose in moderation is fine.

We've banned and stopped producing all sorts of things to protect consumers. Toy cap guns that looked real guns come to mind. I had these as a kid.
you can still get lawn darts. All be it safer ones.
i don’t think the lawn darts were banned…. They just be came a liability to produce.

you can Still buy toy guns…. as well as real ones

you have the right and can the choice note to purchase soda and juice drinks for your family.

But, if you push bans to far some day someone is going to ban something you enjoy, Like free speech

Did you miss the bit about the obesity paradox? This is under review. Lots of studies coming out on it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity_paradox

You can look it up for yourself. Lots of studies on it.
Its important to note these studies are on mortality, not overall health. People with high BMI defiently have more health problems…..

But they do not die younger….
