A friend takes care of her grandmother and can't work because of it. Someone told her that social security or the state will pay for her trip. She asked me if I knew about it. I told her I didn't know anything about that, but I'd ask the disboards because everyone is so helpful! :confused3

There is absolutely no possible way that this could be true. As Simon Cowell would say, "Sorry!" :)

Sorry, that is not true. If grandmother receives social security funds, she can use the funds to pay for her own trip, and the cost of taking a caregiver with her. The monthly Social Security unearned income will not increase for the trip, she is just using social security money to pay for the trip. There are some exclusions to what can be paid for with the SS money during vacation. Your friend will want to check with grandmother's social security worker. Under normal circumstances she would not be asked what she spent the money on, but if audited it could come up.

Do you mean they would pay for a home-health aide to care for the grandmother while your friend is on her trip? The grandmother may qualify for some type of this service. She'd have to ask her social worker.

If you meant pay for your friend's vacation???? I'm a stay at home mom and care for my kids at home. Does this mean I should have a free vacation?
Try again with this one.

There is a group in Florida called Compassionate Friends that may help the Grandmother.

This is too much.

The Social Security Adminstration will not pay for a trip to WDW.

You can spend your social security money on anything legal you want and the Social Security Adminsitration can say nothing about it.

If one receives Social Security benefits, i.e., SSDI, SSRI, Social Security retirement benefits after age 62, etc., then it is your money to do with as you wish and if you choose to spend one month's, 6 month's or 5 years worth of monthly checks at WDW, you may do so.

People who "work" as the caretaker for a family member do not do it because they "can't" otherwise work. If you "can't" work would imply some physical or mental barrier to work, and true caretaking is a significant physicial and mental strain, not suited for someone unhealthy.

Exactly. Even if both of you were on disability (your grandmother and yourself) there would be no extra vacation money for you from the government.

The only people the government pays for to have vacation are government employees...and that's even a stretch

I tried to explain all this to her. I don't know where she got her information. I tried told her it was too far out there to begin with, but I'd double check. (She's just one of those "I don't want to work" types, you know those?) Thanks!

Elderly people often get very confused on things, I think that is what happened here. I hope she can work out so she can have a trip on her SS if that is what she wants to do.
