so what are you eating tonight

Sounds great Tony! (I made my gravy Sunday ;) )

Homemade Italian sausage patties (they make sandwiches out of them), baked mostaccoli, 2 beef roasts, 2 jell-o molds, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, salad, Italian olives, geen onions and radishes.

My niece, gotta love her, is bring all of the desserts.

We have a traditional italian dinner on Christmas Eve as well. Ours will start with this yummy clam dip served with triscuits then shrimp cocktail, fried calamari, fried shrimp, mussels marinara, scungilli salad, spaghetti aglio olio (spelling?) which is spaghetti with olive oil, black olives and anchovies YUM! (That's 7, right?)For dessert, homemade cookies and pie. Everyone enjoy their dinners and have a Merry Christmas!:Pinkbounc

Traditionally, always a pizza for us on Christmas Eve...but SINCE we weren't thinking and had one last night... we'll probably opt for chinese take-out instead this year :o

Sounds wonderful, Tony....not so far away, I could hop in the car and be there in no time! ;) :p

 Hi, Tony.

I can't do the seafood thing. I'm not skilled at cooking it, and it's so expensive to feed to a crowd.

I'm doing a delicacies-we-grew-up-on dinner tonight. I ordered cold cut platters from the deli, filled with prosciutto, ham, soppresata, mortadella, salami, provolone. I'm serving that with pepperoni, Abruzzi sausage, chunked provolone (the stinky kind) and a lazy susan full of stuff like pickled eggplant, sundried tomatoes, marinated mushrooms, roasted peppers, and lupini beans (I made all of these myself this year), pepperoncini, olive salad, artichoke hearts, and anchovies.

Later on, we'll have baked ziti and prosciutto pies.

Dessert is cheesecake (we have 3 kinds), cookies I've been making all month, and fine chocolates. Also, espresso and/or cappuchino. Breaking out my machine!

Merry Christmas, everybody!

We go to the candlelight service at church at 6:00 PM tonight so I told oldest DS and DD-I-L to come over around 4. We will have sub sandwiches and pizza before leaving for church. Then after church we will all come back to the house for cookies and the opening of the presents. We will have our big dinner tomorrow. Now that oldest DS is married they have Christmas Eve with me and Christmas Day with his DW's family. Next Christmas will be so different with a new baby in the family. In case you haven't heard;) I'M GOING TO BE A GRANDMA NEXT YEAR!!!

TC:cool:

After our 4:30 church service where the kids sing, we head to MIL's house (other side of Toledo) for ham, etc. and presents. Tomorrow morning after we open our presents we head to my parents (5 minutes away) for presents--mom usually makes egg casserole--then roast beef for dinner.
I used to make us Christmas Eve dinner when the in-laws lived in Lexington, but now all I do is mooch off of others and make many cookies!

You're not Italian are you, Tony? Wait, Tony from New Jersey, what a stupid question. LOL

Tony, I grew up on macaroni and gravy.

Nowadays, everyone says pasta and sauce, but we of pure Italian blood know better. ;)

Nice to see so many fellow Italians on the boards. :) I have to ask, paras4ri, what is lobster pilaf? Sounds fabulous! Can you share the recipe?

Janice, I haven't heard the phrase "gravy" in years. What a nice memory. :)

OK, now I get it! Gravy is SAUCE! You can tell I'm not Italian...

But on New Year's Day, OUR traditional meal is Pork & Sauerkraut, whereas my Italian MIL makes lasagna.

Pork & Sauerkraut is a Pennsylvania Dutch/German tradition on New Year's Day. Having 12 people for it and I make my own egg noodles by hand and cook with the sauerkraut!! YUM!;)

Technically, Snoopy, my Mom's side of the family is Sicilian (you should have seen my grandmother's face when as a kid I asked what's the difference between Italian and Sicilian! :o  :teeth: )

and you lived to tell eh Steve??? LOL

LOL!! Got smacked around a little (I was used to it by then :p), but yeah, I survived! :teeth:

Oh, don't I know, Steve. I'm from a long line of Sicilians. Of course, I was somewhat of an embarrassment to them anyway, being 5'10", blonde and blue eyed. The blonde sheep of the family, for sure. Or the milkman's daughter maybe..... :teeth:

Our poor kids are Italian, Greek, Swedish & Irish!!!

Tony....we'll be in NJ for the weekend....please save us the leftovers!

Northern Europeans settled in Sicily hundreds of years ago, Snoops. My MIL is blond with blue eyes also.

Now to the good stuff! Christmas Eve is our traditional party at our house. We are doing an oriental twist on the traditional Italian fish dinner. We start with sushi (yeah, you heard right, Snoops) and mushrooms stuffed with feta/spinach/walnuts. The we have pesto, linguini (or perchiatelli) with white calamari sauce (we're big on choices in our family), garlic shrimp, crabcakes with wasabe sauce, and stuffed calamari. This year in the veggie department we are doing bok choy with sesame oil, snow pea pod tips with garlic and soy and a green salad.

Dessert is a whipped cream cake with fruit, pecan pie (don't know where that came from....my sister wanted it badly), and cookies.

I'm exhausted. ;)

I'd be happy to share the lobster pilaf recipe. I've done it for so long that I really don't "read" the recipe so I'll grab the cookbook from my mom's house tonight and copy it, just to be sure I don't leave anything out.

Send me a PM if you'd like it and I'll send it off after Christmas!
