So upsetting...

My fellow DISers I think will be the only ones to truly understand how upset we are -

We have a guest room where we keep all our Disney collectibles in. It is mostly older stuff that we accumulated before we had kids and we keep the door locked to keep them out as most is breakable.

I went to go put away a few things from our trip last week and three shelves had fallen while I was gone, breaking everything on them. I'm talking thousands and thousands of dollars. Things not replaceable such as snow globes we bought on our honeymoon at Disneyland Paris, etc. I could go on and on...

It looks like a bomb went off in there. We're going to have to clean up when the kids go back to school in a week. Little pieces of glass EVERYWHERE. It is almost hard to tell what is what. We will try to sort it out to see what all was broken. I think our homeowners will cover it, but there is really no way to know what everything was worth and if we'll ever be able to replace it.

One odd thing is we had a really nice Alice print hanging next to the shelves and water from the snow globes managed to get inside it and ruin it and the wall. The shelves actually sliced the wall itself, too.

A bed is underneath the shelves and I'm pretty sure I'll just have to toss out all the bedding, there is so much glass. Plus, I had been sorting out some scrapbooks and they were laid out on the bed. Most are ruined. Hours of work!

I locked the door again and haven't been back in. It is heartbreaking. I know it sounds silly, but I'm sure many of you can relate unlike others.

Oh, how awful! I'm so sorry.

Shan

I really sorry how really really terrible. I hope you can salvage some things, I would be devastated as well.

Denise :(

Oh Shan, you poor thing. The mess alone is a pain in the butt but the loss of so many precious belongings is heartbreaking.

Thinking of you,

Mandy x

(Thank God that shelf never came down while you had a guest in the bed)

I would be heartbroken if my Mickey wine glass or mug were damaged. I can't even imagine how sad you must be.

What an awful thing to have happen... My condolences.

On a pragmatic level, you might be able to look on e-bay for prices of items no longer readily available. Since you are the one who reports the amount to your insurance company, make sure you figure in the cost of shipping & insurance.

Also, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you have 'replacement value' for your insurance, otherwise, they may try to tell you that the items you lost have depreciated and aren't worth anything (I found that one out the hard way when I was younger).

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I have things that I have collected over the years too and would be heartbroken if anything happened to them. Let us know what you were able to salvage when you can go back in. What a sad thing to come home to after your trip.

I would think that your loss may be covered by home owners insurance. you may want to check it out.

Holy cow that sucks my wife would be heart broken if that happened to her Disney stuff I would to mind you as I love looking at it as much as she does. Sorry for your loss of treasures hopefully your insurance will cover it and you can find some replacements.

Oh how terrible! I certainly feel for you.

Oh so sorry, what an awful thing to come home to after your trip - let alone have it happen at all!

Ahh Shan...how sad. I know I would be devastated if something like that happened. The mess alone is miserable!! Your poor treasures. All I can say is I'm really sorry.

Oh man, that is awful! I know I broke our snowglobe of the castle that my aunt had bought us as a wedding gift(we got married at WDW) and it absolutely broke my heart. I broke it while I was dusting around it of all things! But I was able to just kind of break the glass off around it and I still have the castle on the wood base in a box in the attic. I just couldn't throw it away.

I hope you can at least get your insurance to cover it so maybe you could scour eBay and find some replacements!

Good luck!

My heart is breaking for you.

Your feelings are not silly at all--your collectibles are more than "things," they represent cherished memories.

Wow, I'm so sorry. That is really sad.:sad1:

That will take a while to get over. I'm so sorry.

Once you get it cleaned up, and if the insurance money comes through, you'll have the cash to start collecting all over again. That should be some consolation.
