so sad...

Yes, it is sad. However, I don't believe that we are intentionally targeting civilians.

All I got was a form to complete so that the Washington Post could "know more about their audience". Do I have to fill that out to see the article?

I would be interested to know where the Washington Post got such details regarding this incident. My goodness, quotes and everything, from a bomb torn area. Amazing!

I am sure that civilians died that day, and that is indeed a tragedy. But I choose to believe my government when they say they are investigating and will get to the bottom of it. It would be quite an eye-opener for all if they determined that the bomb was one of Iraq's own. Perhaps they should have asked the Washington Post guy who was there getting all these quotes to check out the bomb itself, since he must have been fairly close by.

Yes, I had to to read the article.

And.....yes....it's so sad. :(

no doubt, tigh, but those are soldiers. in a war obviously soldiers are going to be targeted.

this was 50+ innocent civilians.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I find the INTENTIONAL DEATH of Americans just as sad as the ACCIDENTAL DEATH of Iraqis. If you want to know where more of my feelings lie it is with the Americans. Because I am an American. If you hurt or kill one of my fellow citizens then you hurt me. I feel more pain at the deaths of Americans than I do at the deaths of Iraqis just as I feel more pain at the death of family or friends than I do at the death of strangers.
Of course the death of the Iraqis might not be accidental if saddam's regime is responsible. Then I believe there is the possiblity that the civilians were targeted and their deaths were intentional also.

Okay, *deep breath*, Keli.

Since I'm not part of the Washington Post's audience, I declined to complete that page just to see this article. I have a pretty good idea what it was about from the emotion I see on this thread.

Death is very sad, civilian death, military death. War is hell, I believe is the cliche. It truly is.

Nothing about war makes me happy, I would be surprised to hear that anyone enjoys war (except maybe General Patton and he's no longer with us). It is very sad that people are dying anywhere for any reason.

Keli... you are not in the minority.. I just wanted you to know that... I feel your passion and am glad that you are speaking out.. Good for you...

Yesterday I attended with my youngest daughter a Support the Troops rally in Mashpee, MA.. it was an emotional and powerful rally......and one so definitely supporting the troops, our country, and our President... so I do not want you to think you are alone in your thinking.. Amazing though it did not get the coverage that the anti war rally got in Boston...Amazing..

isn't it possible to feel bad for both iraqi innocents and americans?

Caity, it is possible. I do feel sad for the casualties of the war in Iraq. The American soldiers, the UK soldiers, the Iraqi soldiers who are forced to fight or die at the hands of their government and the Iraqi people who are in the wrong place at the wrong time and die or get wounded, and the journalists who have died or gone missing.

It's sad that anyone has to die in this war. I know it's going to happen, but I still feel more emotional about the loss of American lives than the loss of Iraqi lives. That's just how I feel.

Caity, as posted in your other link - for which you were so quick to correct me - I do feel sorrow for the innocent people of Iraq. As a mother, my heart breaks for those mothers who have lost children.

It just seems to me that you are so quick to post threads and links about the poor Iraqi's, but you don't post a "so sad" thread about the bodies of our soldiers that were found dismembered in a shallow grave yesterday.

I know you hate our President and I know you don't agree with this war - that's your choice. The majority of this country feels we are doing the right thing. I will continue to pray that we can depose Saddam with the minimum amount of lives lost on both sides - but I will also support my President and my country and those who serve it for as long as it takes.

So what's your point Caity?

Caity, I think everyone feels bad for innocent lives lost whether they be Iraqi's, American or UK. I haven't read in any thread anywhere where someone has said they were happy that innocent civilans were killed.

There are several members of this board that have loved one over there risking their lives to try to help these because become free from the attrocities that they have to live with on a daily basis. Our service men and woman are bringing these innocent Iraqi's food and water which is more than I can say that their government has done for them. They're government will pay their families $35K to blow themselves up to kill our innocent soldiers. I find that REALLY sad & pathetic!!!

Of course its possible to feel sadness for both side who suffer loss. War is a horrible, ugly thing. I cry for the mothers that have lost in Iraq, as much as I do for the mothers of our soldiers. I believe we all feel that pain of a mothers loss.

I dont believe for one minute, that the US is tageting innocent iraq civillians. Not one of our sons, husbands or fathers are over there simply to kill people, its to stop the killing of those innocent civilian.I a sorry for thier losses, and wish there could be another way to bring down SH. There isnt. I feel that we are doing the right thing. I support our decision to be there, now that I am more informed of why we are there. In the beginging, I wasnt. I was very angry and upset about going there, but the more I learned, the more I came to realize, we need to be there.

When we lost 3000 innocents on 9/11 who was there for us?

First of all, I don't think we even know for certain that it was American ordnance that caused this. Secondly, it's not like we are intentionally targeting civilians. Accidents are going to happen, period.

Yes, I feel terrible for the Iraqi civilians that are in the middle of this. But I fail to see why the fault lies with America, when the whole reason we are there is because of Hussein.

Civilians, especially those in the southern part of Iraq are unfortunately going to pay a high price for the tactics employed by the Iraqi military, i.e., ambushing our troops when the Iraqis are under surrender flags, Iraqi troops wearing civilian clothes under their uniforms, etc. I think it is unreasonable to expect our troops to stand around and get killed in order to give the benefit of the doubt to people that have proven they have no problem breaking every rule under LOAC.

Very well said, AFR!! The American military seems to be taking extraordinary care to avoid civilian casualties, even at the risk of military lives. How could we ask them to do more than that?

We can't ask them to do more, and there is no reason we should. I just heard on the news yesterday that due to the suicide bombing involving the taxi, the rules are now changed. Vehicles that fail to slow down for checkpoints or vehicles whose drivers refuse to obey instructions will be destroyed, period, no questions asked.
