We went on a cruise two years ago and rebooked 4 rooms with one person in each room. $1000. Our intention was always to go Easter break 2012...My fake date was this dec 4...I never heard anything in about a year and I got a confirmation letter about ten days ago.. I kept meaning to change date again so I could book APril 2012..By the time I got my lazy butt around to calling it was 68 days until the reservation. I lost $1000!!!! I feel like crying. I know I only have myself to blame but I am so upset...I work all day and every night my kids are in activities every night and the time got away..ughhh....

I have cruised three times and I am so turned off I do not know if I can cruise with Disney again..I will keep remembering losing $1k to my own stupididty...I am scared to tell my husband, he is going to kill me!

OK sad vent over

That´s really a pitty. Is there really no chance that they will rebook you?

That's an expensive lesson to have to learn the hard way. Could you have made the final payment a few days late and still have gone this December?

Have you talked to someone about this or are you just taking it as a loss? Keep us informed. Wishing you the best. I know how easy it is to lose track of time.

I am so sorry to hear that, did you have insurance?

I know how easily time can slip away and now I have learned to put important dates on my email calendar so that it sends me reminders. We book through a TA and thankfully she keeps us on our toes about important dates like final payment our ADR dates for WDW, etc

ARe you sure you lost the money? I was under the impression that if you don't pay your cruise in full then your reservation is cancelled and you receive your deposit money back. Is this not the case?

That was my assumption, too.

Nope, this happened to me once too. Lucky it was only 1 cabin on a 3NT. I was able to still rebook the cruise to a different date but when payment came around for actual cruise, the deposit amount I lost was added to my total of the cruise. So it cost me $400 more that it should have.

If it were me I would still move the cruise to keep the 10% and onboard credit, then you are not actually losing the $1000, you just aren't getting the deal you thought you were going to get by booking onboard.

OK yesterday they told me I COULD NOT move the cruise or get a refund. I could only go on Dec 4th cruise. I CAN NOT go on Dec 4th cruise so I lost money. I called this afternoon and pleaded. They said I could move one room to a 2011 date only. I could not switch it again (remember I wanted to go on April 12 cruise/Easter break from schools) The only time I could go would be this April of 2011. The prices for a family of 4 was almost 6k for a inside cabin. I think if I booked a April 2012 it would be much cheaper (booking on the day 2012 dates are released)...Remember I can only move one room and am not allowed to change it again. I am losing $750 regardless. I am not sure what to do.

I think I would rather be out $1000 than pay an exorbitant amount for an April 2011 cruise. I suggest pleading again when the 2012 dates are released.

I still say call back..it's reasonable, we're all human and you booked it sooo long ago, surely someone there is more kind...I can see their point a bit, they held those 4 rooms open for you so they were not able to rebook those rooms when they offered specials and the such....they may still be able to rebook them now with you cancelling, but they like to have them all filled in 75 days prior I'm sure...

Now to just put things into perspective...

Do you drink soda? (Or even if you don't) it's easy to blow $750 a year on soda, beer, wine, heck some people can blow $750 in a week just on their bar tab on a cruise...it's very hard to swallow, but also keep in mind that you may still get a good cruise deal, we got kids sail free for March and if you check weekly, they're always offering deals, right now it was Kids sail free in veranda rooms, so you'd just pay for 2 people for a cat 5 or higher? You might be able to take that April trip after all...and just think of taxes...we don't feel bad when the government takes an extra $750 from us...we just pay it, money is money, it really only holds the value we give it, so don't be hard on yourself, and don't give up trying to get $500 back, I think that would make you feel better! :)

Are you SURE that out of 52 weeks in a year that the Easter week is the ONLY week you can find to go?? That date is just much to close now to find any deals. I'd much rather find a 2nd date in the summer or something that would work...rather than spend the rest of my life " too turned off to cruise DCL" (as you said) (which really, it's NOT their fault). I constantly mark things like this on my calendar for the month before I have to take care of it, then again for the WEEK before something is due and then agin for the DAY BEFORE it's due. If I blow right on by all 3 reminders then I DESERVE to be pissed off at my own self.

When we rebooked for a dummy date on the Wonder back in 2008 we booked the latest Dec 2009 date they allowed and were up front about it being a dummy date. Within days after they opened up the 2010 itineraries they called us to say we could move it to 2010. They KNEW it was a dummy reservation. So in Dec 2009 we just moved it to Dec 2010 'cuz we were wating for the Dream. Who knew they'd screw that one up for us by only doing the short cruises. Did they not call you when the 2011 dates came out last year??? Surely I am not the only one they've ever called with a reminder.:confused3

Anyway, I would just seriously pull the calendar out and have a good look at it again & find another date & salvage whatever I could.

The calls are hit and miss.

I know it is my fault BUT...Yes, I was upfront and told them it was a dummy date. No they did not call with a reminder. The reason I could not sail Disney again is I am so mad at MYSELF it would damper it. Hopefully I will come around.

I love Disney and have been on several cruises and several visits to magic Kingdom. I really believe it will be cheaper to take the loss of $1000 and book on the day the dates are released for April 2012...What I havn't said is I had lost my job last year and just got a new job, we have some catching up to do financialy. It would be more responsible of me to book A cruise (not sure if Disney) for April 2012...

It kills me to lose $1000 ( i know I know my own fault) but I really do not see an option...

I might try calling tomorrow and asking for another supervisor...Maybe I could get some money back...

Or my dream would be that 2012 dates are released tomorrow! Maybe they would let me book 2012 if dates were released tomorrow...

Thanks for listening
H

I consider this especially bad policy on the part of dcl.

Why? They have terms and conditions like every other company out there. Basically when you pay the deposit you are agreeing to those terms and conditions that are listed on the back of the confirmation letter you receive upon paying deposit.

It isn't DCL's fault that the OP misssed their date. If they knew they were changing their date they have had almost a year to do so. The 2011 dates became avaialble almost one year ago.

While I am sorry this happened it is in no way DCL's fault they did send them a letter reminding them that their final payment was coming due

I don't understand how they lost $1000 - if they booked one person per room on a 7nt sailing it should be $125 per person deposit when rebooking onboard
If they did pay more than the required deposit they would only still be losing the $125 per person as that is the cancellation policy at this point for the Dec 4 sailing. They would receive the difference back

She booked onboard 2 years ago, and DCL may not have had 50% deposits at that time. I booked 2 cruises onboard in Jan. 2008, and I paid the full deposit.
