So I stayed at the GCH this weekend

I am not happy that I am out of the running for a "Founding Members" first crack at GC DVC. I live in CA, and bought my master contract through the mail from CA. Does that make me eligable? Also, did I read correctly that the minimum number of points to purchase is 160? I don't want that many add on points.
I'll be calling my guide in the morning for clarification, and if I don't like the answer, registering a complaint.

boy theres a lot of info here that just not too good

if they want to offer it first to the original purchasers from DL then fine, but next has to be others existing members.:confused3

why would they then lump other members in with the general public? thats really not too cool at all:mad:

the 160 points--maybe they are saying they can buy up to 160 but not more as to be sure the points make their way around. I dont know its just plain dumb if they are going to make existing members add on 160 points. I doubt new members owuld ever need 160 just for DL

Grand Villas- I sure hope not, sounds like th eamount of rooms are going to be minimal as it is.

great pics though--thanks

I'm going to wait until the official annoucement from Disney before getting too upset about this. JMO

Interesting news. Last week i put deposit on AKV ( for which im very excited to be a member) paperwork arrived today to sign . Im all set to sign on the dotted line but find out now that if i bought at DLR i get first shot at the GC DVC . What should i do now? cancel the contract and buy down there ( i live in norcal) or not worry about it and just assume I will be able to do an add on?
PS I think im addicted to reading these boards, thanks
Welcome to the DIS! I think it all depends on how much you think you will want to own at GC DVC in addition to AKV. If you know that you will add on in CA, then it might be worth your while to adjust the sale so you can have priority.

I don't think there will be a huge problem getting an add-on when they come available to non-DLR master contract holders as long as you call your guide right away.

I have a master from DLR, and I still think that this policy, if true, sucks for existing members. I am waiting to hear from my CA guide as well.

One line of thinking is that sales are slowing in CA, because most people are not willing to buy in Florida when GCH and Hawaii are just around the corner.
(WDW is not as big a vacation destination on the West Coast as DLR and Hawaii are). This might be Disney's way of spurring sales between now, and when points go on sale for GCH and Hawaii. I looked at my contracts, there is no clause in them as we speak. This may be something that will be added soon. I will try and confirm.

Something, just doesn't smell right about this. Unless Disney knows something we don't, about interest in sales, ...I can't imagine GVC selling THAT fast. I think it's a sales ploy to make it seem VERY exclusive....making everyone jump when it does go on sale.

We toured at Disneyland also yesterday and we met with a female guide. She told us about a "Founding Members" program. The way I guess it works is this. If you buy through California, either by mail or in person you are "Guaranteed" to be able to buy at least 160 points when they finish building the Grand. Sounds very enticing....

This is not a clause in a contract, I guess this is a document which is given now at point of sale which indicates the same in writing.....

I guess Im buying.... you can only get that in Cali... We Love IT!!!!!!

It's like when AKV went on sale. Members has first choice......

First, welcome to the Dis!

So the guide implied the sales wouldbe open to existing members first, but that if any of us want to buy, we would have to do it through the DLR DVC guides? I thought that we could only add on through our current guide. Would that then mean that we had 2 guides?

Nope...what it means is the only people allowed to buy their GCV memberships first are people that already bought their master contract through DLR. According to the info. given, members that bought thru WDW would be lumped in the same group as people that aren't even members at all.

I really think this whole thing is just a ploy to get people to buy a larger number of points. For the most part, people only visit DLR for about 5 days at most, it's not like WDW where there is so much to do that people come for several weeks at a time. I think they know existing members will be more likely to do a 50-100 pt add-on vs. 160+ pts so they are starting rumors that will get everybody in a frenzy. Honestly, with the competition from some really nice hotels located only minutes way, these units may not sell out as fast everyone thinks.

I agree with Calypso. The small number of DVC Rooms being allotted from the addition being built is a sign I think. If they were expecting booming sales, I think the DVC portion would have been larger. Just my two cents...

Anyway, I will wait and see. My attitude is that I would like to add on at DL but if it can't be done, then oh well. I always have my WDW lol.

My understanding, (From a very reliable source) is that DVC wanted to build more units, but got a huge amount of "push back" from DLR management. Their take was "we are at 96% occupancy all year long, we need more standard hotel rooms, not DVC" I understand that DVC was happy to get their 50 units, and will make the case for more, once the initial 50 sell out.

The decision to build more standard rooms than DVC was based on a high demand for Standard hotel rooms at DLR, not lack of confidence in DVC sales.

Right now there are a mere 2,400 standard hotel rooms at DLR, (compared to almost 30,000 at WDW)

"Founding Members" is what he called it. He did say "clause in the contract" but it could very well be a seperate document. I didn't ask to see it (wish I had) but he did say at some point they will discontinue this so that makes sense that it is a seperate document. When they decide to end it they can just stop including it.

I do believe it is true that they are giving preference to DLR purchasers because, as I previously said, he put in a call to someone in Florida to answer a question I had about this. I was sitting there when he called. I do, however, have a call in to my guide. He is always slower than molasses in January getting back to me but hopefully I will hear from him soon. I would love to be wrong.

I don't think that 160 is the minimum add on. I think that they just guarantee "Founding Members" to be able to add on at least 160 points. Don't know that for sure but that was my impression. There will be points for the rest of us to buy. Not every "Founding Member" is going to add on and a good number that do most likely will not add on that many.

I wonder if these "Founding Members" will get anything special? Their names on a lovely tapestry maybe?

I was told that you were guaranteed at least 160, but could add on in smaller
amounts.

I bought today by mail... YEY!!!

This, to me, sounds as if this "Founding Members" program would only be available to those who purchase through California from this point forward -- not for existing members regardless of where they purchased. It's a sales incentive offered to prospective buyers. So, in other words, if you buy between now and next ____________ (fill-in the blank for whenever GCHV sales will start), you will be eligible to purchase up to 160 points before anyone else gets a crack at it. If you're already an owner -- too bad! :headache: Am I reading this right?!?

It is my understanding that it is anyone who bought their original master contract through DLR. Either in person or by mail. Beginning from the first contract sold there to some undetermined point in the future. I was told there will be a stopping date. It won't be made available to everyone buying until GCV goes on sale. They have calculated a certain total number of points they will guarantee and when that is reached they will end the Founding Member incentive. So there will still be points available for the rest of us to buy.

Are the DVC salespeople paid by commission? We are in the initial stages of buying, and could certainly switch to CA for our purchase. I'd hate to do that to our salesperson though. Does anyone know how he's payed?

If you absolutely insisted that you will not buy unless at DLR, he most likely would contact a guide there and "Split" the comission. I have heard of split comissions before in similar situations.
