My Nephew just came home from his honeymoon and bought it. He told my SIL that he is buying 25,000 worth (not sure how many points that is) With the idea he is going to rent points out to his family when we need to go. He told her I know Aunt Gina will want to rent some points from me. Then I had to listen to them say how silly it is that he is spending so much money on a timeshare, how many vacations he could go on for his money, blah, blah, blah. Well I just sat there and listened because I already have my share in DVC and don't plan on renting out any of my points and happy I never told them my business. LOL Why anyone cares what you do with your money is beyond me, but they do. :guilty:
  one week till my first DVC trip to Disneyland. The Disney Grand CA. Hotel. Woohoo

Wow...you could work in national security!
About the time the "blah, blah, blah" started, I would have shot back
a zinger about how smart his was to follow in his aunt's footsteps and purchase DVC.
I would have loved to see their mouths drop. :rotfl:

I'm not sure why people ever feel it's their business to say how we spend our money. We bought into the DVC in 2005. For us it wasn't so much that we bought into Disney as much as it was we were buying into a timeshare. My DB and DSIL had purchased a timeshare in Mexico and had never used it after their initial trip. To everyone in our family it was a total waste of money. I've learned now that I do not need to defend our purchases to anyone. How we spend our vacation is our business. Time with our children and grandchildren is priceless and if it means spending that time at Disney then how lucky are we! :Pinkbounc

Never feel bad about buying into DVC. It was said on the TODAY show last week that visits to Disney keeps you young and is good for you. Tell your family it's therapeudic! :thumbsup2

I think your story is funny. I have been blessed with a family that doesn't judge about the money spent on things (at least not to each other's faces). They all know I bought, but when I talk about points and trips and such, their eyes just glaze over. I thought my younger sister and family might be a candidate, but on their last trip, they didn't take the time to do the tour. Then again, it took us five years to take the plunge.

It took us 9 years to take the plunge.
(After orthodontist and college for the children.)

I wish I had the nerve! That would have been great. Don't think the thought didn't cross my mine but I wasn't with my DH and had no backup.

Thanks, I would never feel bad about my purchase but to try to explain the benifits to them would just be too hard. They already think I'm insane because I love it so. ( I'm 47, youngest kiddie is going on 16) I am going to tell them about the Today show information. That's what I have been saying all along. (Note my Tag!) We are the lucky ones!

:lmao:

That is funny! I cant hold water, so our family knows all our business. :rotfl2:

I tell, but I dont care what they say. We still pack it up every 3-4 months and take trips.

I can see your Nephew getting offended when you continue to take Disney trips to your secret DVC and not rent his points, as he so skillfully planned ;)

Well, he may have to branch out from his renting to family plan to renting on the boards or else find some way to use all those points himself? Do you have the same home resort?

Of course if he is buying SSR from Disney, it's only about 250 points, isn't it? Or is my math off? Unless he is getting a heck of a deal (like $62 a point), it's going to be a good deal less than 400 points, right?

Anyhow, we aren't really telling anyone about our DVC either - why should they care when and how we pay for our vacation accomodations? :teeth: In reality, it's true that people feel a need to comment.

:thumbsup2 for keeping mum. That must have been SO challenging. Only certain members of our family know we own and few friends. We learned from the experience of others how some people respond negatively and then months later suddenly remember and "realize" your ownership might finance the hotel portion of their trip. I admit I smiled and chuckled when you mentioned your nephew's DVC plan to assume he could charge the family. Good luck to him. ;) In my case, I will just continue to hide our DVC membership.

I sort of feel sorry for him, if he bought more than he needed thinking he was going to be able to rent them to someone he trusts. But, then again, he should have called someone with "hey, if I do this, will you....."

We have the oposite problem .They all (family ) Know I spend for the now and don't really care much about tomorrow ( not really true have retirement at work and have been in 401K from beginning). But I like my toys and like them now .So when I invested in my Future vacations they were like WHAT!!!!.

Now they are all asking about it and what made me to decide to do it.

I just have to find a way to better explain it to DW she thinks we can take everyone and treat all to our points .We treated DM & DsF to our 1st trip home as we had the extra buy-in points and explained that if they wanted to come again we could rent /transfer some points in and split the cost of doing that with no problem.

I don't want to start borrowing I would rather rent or pay Cash for POP or an AP discount.I want to make sure we get our full week in the summer and at least 1 fall/winter trip for one of the parties.

We bought 520 points so that we could try and convert all our friends and they can stay with us whenever we go. However they will have to pay their own flights and currently that is so much during the school holidays. We are managing to take two other families with us this year and still have points left for an exchange in europe later in the year.

I love the idea of treating our friends. They would never stay on site otherwise.

I also feel sorry for him. It sounds like he was thinking of his family (and esp the OP) and how they would like to share DVC. It seems kinda mean to laugh at him for it.

Since my post referenced.............I did not laugh at him for that. My laugh smilie was misplaced in the quote.
Please see my original post for proper placement of the laugh smiley. I laughed because the OP kept a secret I cant hold.

Just pointing out, that there could be future family tension when the OP continues her trips without taking some of those points off her nephews hands.

We got reamed by both our families about buying. Well two yaers later my DB owns more points than us. My DBIL is thinking about buying also. My other brother and BIL are always asking if we have extra points. How the worm turns in two years.

I actually didn't mean you. I got that feeling from the OP.

I'm sure when we first told my inlaws they had things to say. But at least they kept it to themselves. Our first trip "home", we brought the four of us, DMIL, DFIL, DSIL and DD best friend. We had a great time. Whenever DSIL comes home we always talk about Disney. In 2008 we have decided to have a family reunion with DH side of the family and use our points for all of us. DH's other sister has 2 kids, they will be 4 1/2 and 6 1/2. It will be a blast with all of them. And to see the kids faces when they are there will be priceless!!!! Don't be ashamed about owning in the DVC. I would shout it from the roof tops if I could. Hey but that's me, I'm a kinda here I am sort of person. :joker:
