My mom, 86, wants to go to Disney "one more time". My brother and his wife are actually taking her but I'm making all the arrangements. I am stymied by her air travel though!

Obviously she needs to provide a government-issued photo id. Her driver's license expired long ago, as did her passport. I checked at the DMV to see about getting a photo id card, but she needs to present her birth certificate (which I have) and marriage license (which I don't!) in order to get an id card.

Yikes! What other id's might work for her so she can fly?? They are traveling in mid-Jan so I'm in a time crunch too.

Can you check to see if it is possible to get another passport on an emergency basis? I know it will be expensive, but it may be possible with a birth certificate only.

Needing the marriage license seems to be a really tough obstacle. I just looked at the ID requirement which is:
* If you are using a name other than your birth name, you must bring the document that initiated the change of name, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court name change order.
* The Identification Card will be mailed to your Maryland address on record.
* Please pay close attention to the expiration date of your Maryland Identification Card. The MVA is not obligated to remind you when it is time to reapply for an Identification Card.

Call your local congressman's office to see if they have any ideas.

Check with DMV on other types of valid identification. I'm sure she's not the first person to run into this issue.

if she can't get any form of ID, she can still fly. She would be subjected to additional security screening at the TSA checkpoint.

How about this list of requirements for a passport renewal?
Renew by Mail if All of the Following are True:

Your Most Recent U.S. Passport:

Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application
Was issued when you were age 16 or older
Was issued within the last 15 years
Was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change

but check with your local congressman's office.

Thanks, Duds, I didn't know this. It will help the OP.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, I'm sure something will work!

I'm not sure if this is legal or not, but can she just get an ID using her maiden name and buy a ticket using that name also. Name and ID will match then.

If ths is not legal, please ignore it.

Happens when someone has lost their ID...... they have to tell TSA they don't have ID and they will be subjected to additional screening...

Can't you just get a copy of her marriage license? It should only be a few dollars if you know what county she was married in.

She should be able to request a copy of her marriage liscense. Go to the state where the marriage took place and go to their website for vital satistics. This is the site for Maryland:

http://vsa.maryland.gov/html/marriage.cfm

It looks like Maryland costs $12.

Bring both her expired passport and drivers license when she goes through security. She may be subject to additional screening but likely not. This is not an uncommon situation with older travelers.

Go here http://www.mva.maryland.gov/Driver-Services/Apply/apply.htm and click on the link for the types of identification documents you and she will have to present when you go to your local branch office. Make sure you have everything in hand when you two go there. Be aware that the name on the ID card will need to match her Social Security records. Go armed with bank statements and other documents which contain that same name.

Get the marriage certificate.
