I have a little Sony CyberShot that DH gave me a few years ago. It took decent photos, but it has been dropped, the lens "grinds" when it opens, and it is just wearing out. I want to take a step up, but I am so very confused as no one in the box stores around here really have any clue to what they are selling. I have been looking online and there are too many choices. I was going to stick to a small compact camera that I can toss in a purse or pocket, but have been thinking this......

Nikon Coolpix P100 10 MP Digital Camera with 26x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Black)

It was recommended by a friend that is a professional photographer. She warned me that it may be bulkier than what I wanted. But for $50 more than a new Cybershot, I can get a lot more camera. I can use this but keep my little old one in my purse until it dies.

In laymen's terms, what do you think? I want to order it soon from Amazon. I also need advice on getting the correct memory card.

Thanks!
Karen

I don't know the camera myself, but you might be able to find some reviews. You can google the model number and the word review. Also, check to see if sites like DPReview, steves-digicams, and DCResource have reviews.

As for cards, I really like Kingston. They are very high quality at a really good price. I typically buy from Newegg for them, but sometime from Buy.com. I suggest avoiding places like Ebay for cards because there are often counterfeit cards selling through sites like that.

There are certainly a lot of cameras out there to choose from. Most of them now take a fairly large file so you don't have to worry about that. Anything 10 mega pixel or larger is good. The other thing I like to watch for is a camera that has a closing lens protector. P&S's tend to get handled a lot and easy to get your fingers on the lens if not protected. Large viewing screens are nice and an easy to work with interface is important.
The Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is a great camera. Has all the stuff I talked about plus it is impact resistant and waterproof. Don' have to worry about being rough with your camera or getting it wet. Takes great quality images.
They have a couple or Tough models depending on your price budget.

Most cards are pretty good, just don't buy the cheapest one.

Hope that helps, good luck.
