So Annoyed at Chase Right Now

Every time we are about to charge outside our normal zone I call Chase and tell them that we are going on a trip or we are about to make a large purchase. They then put a notation on my account that I will be doing this. They then email me to confirm this and all is fine and dandy. I think this is a good thing for me and them, too.

Anyway, at the airport, the security guy pulled it out, and really belittled me, with "what size is allowed?" and then when I looked at it, and saw it was in fact .5 ounces over the 3 ounce limit.

I said sorry I hadn't noticed, and fully expected him to just toss it, but instead he put it back in the bag.

If it was such a big deal to be so rude to me, and make such a huge deal over, why give it back instead of just tossing it?
You are permitted 100ml, which equates to 3.3714 US oz, which is turn is rounded up to 3.4oz in the US. The rules are listed on TSA.gov and I do recommend that travellers read there so that they know and understand what is permitted.

Worse, the actual limit is 3.4 oz (100 ml), so he was doing that over one ounce.

I do believe the OP would have preferred that.

Honestly, if someone got into your mail, couldn't they have access to enough info to be able to answer the questions? So the OP could have been just about anyone on the phone.

I too would have preferred they denied it.
Thank you! I'm glad somebody actually got the point I was trying to make. :thumbsup2

And the only thing I needed to verify that it was me was my birthdate, that really doesn't seem to be that much to verify.

Well, no, the questions are things like your mother's maiden name, how often is that in your mail?

I don't see the problem. When I had an unexpected purchase and had to call in they would ask questions like. What was the store that you recently purchased $X at. Some times the purchase was a real one and other times not. Mother's maiden name is also used. That is why putting it on your Facebook account, like many do, is a stupid idea.

Why would you not have your mail going to your address? Seems like too much chance to miss an important mail, as seemed to happen here.

I have to say that with all the trouble you have had over the years with your parents snooping through your stuff, and your mother taking things that don't belong to her, I am ABSOLUTELY STUNNED that you haven't changed your address and continue to have your mail sent to their house! I am pretty sure that at least two years ago I personally suggested you get a post office box somewhere so they wouldn't have access to your bank statements, etc, because I remember you posting that they had opened your credit card statement and made comments about your purchases!

Now with this latest episode with Chase, it's time to change your address and have all your mail go to where you actually live, so nobody has access to it but you, and you will receive important mail in a timely manner.

Sage advice on deaf ears.

Sorry if this has already been addressed.

I understand that you are frustrated though I understand why they did what they did, but do you understand? You did verify that you were the cardholder, so that's why they authorized the purchase. They then closed the account on the chance that the new card was stolen since you hadn't received it. If they would have kept it open, it was stolen, and then purchases made, would that have been better?

On a happier note, congrats for moving out of your parents house! I must have missed the anouncement. Are you now living with your fiance? I remember you trying to look for places with him, but your schedules didn't mesh well. Did he finally get to go to WDW with you? I was reading your old TR, but I saw the new one (haven't had a chance to read it). I just love your food reviews! Sorry for going OT. :flower3:

Actually what they asked me was my birthday. IMO, that's not that difficult to find out.

DO NOT put check id on the back of your cards. Fake IDs are a dime a dozen but your signature is unique to you.

Credit Card companies themselves are the ones who are responsible for fraudulent charges, not users. There is a reason every single credit card ever issued has a box that says "Sign Your Card Here." It is because they want you to SIGN YOUR CARD.

As for the card canceled and new card issued, they sent the card in September and it will be November tomorrow. It has been a month and you do not know the location of a card that when activated --- they will be responsible for any fraudulent activity on. What exactly do you expect them to do?

I have to respectfully disagree here. I do write "ASK FOR ID" on the back of all of my cards because it actually makes the person take a second look. My signature is already on my ID so they can compare that to the signature on my receipt. Most fraudulent card charges these days are from duplicate cards made with your existing card information, and just about anyone can fake a signature. When I used to have my signature on my cards, it was more formal than what I would sign receipts with, and no one ever questioned it, or asked for my ID to verify it was really my card.

You may disagree but the owner of your card - which would be the issuing creditor - wants you to sign in the box that says "Customer Signature"

I forgot to address this in my initial post, but I would be cross that they closed the account as well. They didn't have to close the account completely, they had at least two other options available to protect themselves and the OP from fraudulent activity. First, they could have suspended or frozen the account until such time as the OP confirmed whether she had or had not received the new card, or, and this would have been the easiest, they could have just reported the card as "lost or stolen", cancelled the CARD, and issued a new one with a new number.

OP, are you SURE they closed the account, and didn't just cancel the CARD?

I was shopping today. At the checkout they had to call my credit card company because it was a $1,000 purchase, and they had call them since I almost never make large purchases with that card.

When I talked to the lady at the credit card company, she said I should've recieved a new card by now, since the one I was using was going to expire at the end of next month. This was after I confirmed that it was in fact me using the card to make my purchase.

She asked me if I had recieved the new card, it had been sent to me at the end of September. It may have come in the mail, but I had been in Florida right after they sent the card, and my mail doesn't even come to my apartment, it goes to my parent's house, so stuff easily gets misplaced, especially considering I didn't collect my mail for over a week.

She ended up closing my account, even though I never had any problems with the card. But she approved the $1,000 purchase.

Seriously. You close the account "just in case" it was stolen, which annoys me. But you approve a $1,000 purchase? Where is the logic in that?

If she had just closed the account I would've just been annoyed, but I don't understand where the logic is of closing an account, but approving a $1,000 purchase, after you go to all the trouble of closing the account because it "might be stolen."

That makes absolutly no sense to me.

Well, actually, it does sound like the new card was lost or stolen, so there's no "just in case" about it. Where is the card? They sent it the end of September (a month ago) and you haven't received it. Either it was stolen from the mail or it was misplaced at your parents' house. Of course this is assuming you have picked up your mail in the last couple of weeks...

I have to concur with another poster who said have your mail sent directly to you. I know it's sometimes tempting to keep things at a more permanent address, but they don't sound too responsible if things easily get misplaced. It wouldn't take much to throw all your mail in a box for you.

It isn't me you are disagreeing with - it is your credit card company. I will not put through the transaction and I will confiscate the card - which is what the credit card companies have asked me to do.

NB - I am in Canada, so the rules may be slightly different in the US (in terms of what happens), but I know that the card is not valid in either country without a signature.

.

FYI-credit cards usually come in a very, very plain envelope with no clue on the outside what it is
If it is going to another person's home-it could easily be mistaken as "junk" mail and be tossed

I'm glad Chase is so diligent-they have questioned purchases we've made on vacation before.

Any sales clerk worth their 'salt" asks for ID fpr $1000 purchase-doesnt matter your buying history at all

My DH put "Ask for ID" on the back of his card, and was told that he had to order a new one. It's easy to make fake ID. If you put "Ask for ID" on the back, the thieves can put whatever signature they like on the fake ID...and then their signature on the receipt will match it.

But what happens when someone makes a fake ID after getting their hands on your card? The fake ID will have their version of your signature and the person checking them out will only have their version to compare with the charge slip.

If you signed your card and the person was not an expert signature forger the cashier may see that the signatures don't match and stop the transaction.

Sooo...OP, what did you buy for $1000? Anything good? Inquiring (nosey) minds want to know!

Makes a lot of sense to me. The CC customer service person obviously asked you the right questions so she knew that you were you, thus she approved the purchase.

But, if you don't have your new card, and you don't have any idea where it is anyone could use it if it got into the wrong hands. She was actually doing you two favors.

1. Allowing you to still make the purchase

2. Protecting you against someone else using your card

I really don't see why you would be upset.

From what I can see she must like to complain a lot. Cause she was just posted about the liquid at the airport which was handed back to her, which was over the size limit, but yet again she is complaining. :confused3

Then she is complaining about not being asked for extra ID when she uses her credit card. :confused3 Again, that would be an ideal way for someone else to use her card. Their fake signature on the fake card. Ideal.

As said I don't see why she is complaining so much and why she is so upset?:confused3
