I had a root canal yesterday morning. I am still in quite a bit of pain today. Is this normal? The pain is manageable with Advil and a Vicodin thrown in there once or twice. If the pain is not any less tomorrow, I plan on calling the dentist. Just wondering, not looking for serious medical advice.

TIA,
Kim

Not a dentist but I would think that is not so normal. I had 2 at once my first experience with root canals and the only thing that hurt was my jaw from the shot. I didn't even need anything but a few ibuprofen.

My second experience was 4 root canals on my front teeth for crowns. All at once. Now, I believe I heard that these are the easiest teeth to do root canals on so that may make a difference but these 4 were also a breeze.

The first were 2 back molars though.
I would just think still having pain might be cause for a phone call.

I would call now. When I had a root canal all I needed was some advil a couple times then I was done. I do have a high pain tolerance though.

Call - sounds like an abscess starting up. If the tooth is infected, you might not have any problems until after they get it and clean it out - basically unleashing the germs on your mouth.

And yes, I know from experience. :) I had a tooth in the back of my mouth that the filling fell out of - basically the tooth rotted out around it. It was like that for months, but it wasn't until I got to the dentist and he started working on it immediately that I had problems. I was in tremendous pain an hour after I got home and my face was swelling. Got the antibiotics in and after two doses my face was back to normal and the pain was gone. :) (I won't tell you about the rest of the root canal. :P)

I agree with the others. I would call. I've had my fair share of root canals. It seems that every cavity I get goes straight to the nerve. :headache:The only one that caused me pain was a back molar. It wasn't the tooth so much that hurt but my jaw. I had a lot of shots and had my mouth wide open for quite awhile.

The only other time I was in the pain that you describe is when the dentist cracked the root of a tooth that had a root canal years before while he was taking off a bridge.

I had one yesterday also and I am still in pain. I had mine done around 4. I took one vicodin last night but have only done advil today. I am planning on taking another vicodin soon. The outside of my jaw is very sore and at times it feels like someone is stabbing me in the tooth. Its my back bottom molar. I also cant eat anything on that side.

Unfortunately this is their closed day. If the pain in the same in the morning I will call. It is a bottom molar that had been previously capped. The pain comes and goes. I have a feeling I will be heading back to the dentist tomorrow.

how are you feeling this morning?

I think I am going to have to call my dentist today.. 2 pain pills last night did nothing for the pain.

Went back to the dentist. I now have an antibiotic and my own Vicodin. If this doesn't work, I will need to go to a specialist. Fingers crossed.

Good luck!! I went back also and the dentist ended up grinding down more of the tooth. Now I have no pain when I bite down but the tooth still throbs.

Im suprised your didnt give you the antibiotic on Tuesday. I have to take one 4 times a day.

I was a little surprised I didn't get the antibiotic on Tuesday as well. He also did some work on my bite. I got Novocain as a temporary pain management option. Unfortunately, I think he caused more problems with it today. The joint in my jaw has been aching ever since. I added some Advil to the mix to work in the inflammation. Just took my 2nd doses of antibiotic and Vicodin. At least I can drive on Vicodin. And I am off from work tomorrow too. Another day of rest and hopefully I will be back to normal.
