Snow to 80 in 8 days–A spoonful of Holiday Cheer (2/5 update Ch 36 - Final Thoughts)

We had a 5:20 dinner ADR at
252.jpg

I told the boys to meet us at 5:10 so we could get checked in a little early and we would hopefully get right in so we might be able to make the second Candlelight Processional presentation. After our little jaunt back over to Germany DW and I were back in Italy before 5:00. As we waited for the boys to arrive I took a few pictures and kept one eye on the time.
Here are a couple of pictures of the newest restaurant that seems to be getting lots of attention right now......

And here was our view looking back towards the Showcase Lagoon.

After a late breakfast I didn't want to spoil my dinner by eating anything else as we took our world tour, and I was starting to get hungry! I checked the time once again on my cell phone and it was about 5:09. I thought to myself "they should be getting here at any time." As I looked back up I located them coming through the crowd towards us right on time.

It turns out that their latest Kim Possible Mission had taken them to Mexico I think. It was almost time for them to meet us and they still had some items left to complete, so they went into hurry up mode and finished about two minutes before they were supposed to meet us. Andrew described their journey back to Italy and I was reminded of an old TV commercial that I think featured OJ Simpson running through an airport, spinning around people, swerving through small gaps and jumping over luggage to make his destination. The funny thing is when they arrived they were walking along chatting as if they had just completed a leisurely stroll to get there.

We quickly headed inside and I checked us in. They told us it would be a few minutes and handed me a pager to let us know when our table was ready. We walked across the lobby to some empty chairs along the far wall, and I handed off the pager so I could wash my hands in the restroom right beside us. When I walked back out a few seconds later, I saw everyone else following the hostess to our table.

We were seated near the entrance to the dining room and were soon greeted by our server John Henry. John Henry was an older man from Italy (seems like he was from Venice but I don't remember for certain) and had the accent to go with it. He was very professional and did a wonderful job making sure everything was satisfactory and all of our needs were met. He would converse with us and was warm to us, but he never strayed too far from being very professional, which is exactly what I would expect in a restaurant like this.

I know that may not sound like the most glowing of reviews but I would be pleased to have John Henry every time we ate at Tutto Italia. I always tried to pronounce the Italian names on the menu and John Henry would patiently wait, repeat a word here and there followed by good, and then tell me my Italian was perfect. I'm sure he was trying to make me feel good as a paying patron, but I don't think that had anything to do with how pleased I was with his service. It certainly didn't hurt though! ;)

We ordered our drinks first. Typically, being a good southern boy, I would normally order sweet tea with my meals, but tea at Disney is typically a really bad proposition, and to be honest I'm not sure I would have ordered it with Italian food if given the choice. Even after 4 and 1/2 years in college, I never acquired a taste for beer and I do not care for wine. Those are not options for me. When I drink, which isn't all that often to start with, it is a mixed drink of some variety. Water would typically be the choice in this situation, but since the drink is part of the DDP I upped the ante and went with Sprite! And yes it was straight.......

The boys ordered soft drinks. Drew also had sprite with Jon and Matt opting for Coke I think. Alison is the wine aficionado in the family and ordered a glass of the house Merlot to go with her water. When the wine arrived she was very pleased with the taste and offered to let Matt sample it, being our only son of legal age. He thought it was really good too, so after showing John Henry the requisite driver's license, he also got a glass of the Merlot.

With drink orders behind us it was time to move on to the main event. Jonathan was the first to order and he went with the Penne Tortelli Di Vitello Al Chianti, which is veal and chianti ravioli. Here is how it looked when it arrived at the table.
255.jpg

Jonathan said it was good, but I think he would have ordered something else if he knew it was such a small portion. :confused3

Drew is our less adventurous eater. If you get him to try something, he usually likes it well enough, but when presented with a number of confusing options on a menu he will go with what is familiar, and for Drew that is spaghetti. If you ever have to feed Drew you can't go wrong with spaghetti. He likes other things, but he really likes spaghetti. The spaghetti at Tutto Italia comes with veal meatballs and pomodoro sauce. Drew really liked this and ate pretty much all of it. (Sorry no picture, but to me spaghetti is spaghetti....lol)

I was next to order. As I said before I do not like wine, and that includes the taste of it cooked in Italian food, which sometimes limits my choices. But on this night I found something that fit all of my criteria for trying something I wouldn't normally order; something new that maximized the use of the DDP and no wine (at least in the description on the menu. My choice was
256.jpg

which was the Costata Di Maiale Alla Valdostana. This is a breaded pork chop, stuffed with prociutto ham and fontina cheese, with potatoes and sauteed spinach. This is one of the best meals I have ever had anywhere, much less a Disney restaurant! I am trying to figure out if there is a way they can make it for me right now and have it delivered before it gets cold. It was so tender and delicious, and the potatoes and sauteed spinach were well seasoned and very good. I know I let DW, Jon and Matt (possibly Drew too) try some so they could see how it tasted, but man I didn't want to even though this was a rather large portion and quite filling.

DW ordered next and she got the Casareci, which was cavatelli pasta with sweet sausage ragu, tomatoes and Pecorino Ramano. This looked almost like a large plate of penne pasta to me (although cavatelli is split open on one side instead of a tube like penne pasta). I know I should have but I didn't get a picture of it. I think I tried though. Alison sat to my left and Andrew to my right. I think that day I only had the zoom lens for the camera and trying to take pictures of their food was a difficult undertaking and I finally gave up. Besides, even for the sake of a DIS Trip Report, I just didn't feel that comfortable making a scene in this restaurant to get a picture of two items that looked pretty much like you would expect. :guilty: DW really enjoyed her meal and the sample she gave me was very good, but not on a par with my stuffed pork chop.

Matt was the last to order and he went with something new too. He ordered
254.jpg

which was the Arrosto Di Vitello In Prochetta which is a veal roast with mushrooms and potatoes, and also the sauteed spinach. Matthew kept commenting how good this was and the sample he gave me was very good; tender and tasty! He also enjoyed the potatoes and spinach. :thumbsup2

After taking care of our drinks and meals, John Henry took our dessert orders. This was another opportunity to pick items we might not normally order. This was the path I took when I ordered
260.jpg

the Gianduja – Chocolate Torta, a chocolate and hazelnut torte with whipped cream and raspberry sauce. Raspberry is something I like okay, but there are a lot of other flavors I pick first. This was an excellent dessert and I thought a very good finish to my stuffed pork chop. :goodvibes

Alison and Matthew both ordered
257.jpg

the Piatto Delizie, which was a sampler of sorts with a cannoli with strawberries, a chocolate torte, and a chocolate tart of some type. When the order came there was some confusion and Alison got
258.jpg

which was the Torta Ricotta, a cheesecake type torte with strawberries. This was actually the same thing Jonathan had ordered. When John Henry realized that Alison didn’t get what she had ordered, he took it back and brought her another Piatto Delizie. They both thought it was delicious, and Jonathan enjoyed his Torta Ricotta.

Andrew ordered the
259.jpg

Mocha Tiramisu. Andrew really didn’t like his choice and didn’t eat very much of it. He slid it across the table and Alison and I finished it for him. It was very good, but not a taste that Andrew enjoyed. Andrew likes to get coffee on occasion and thought this would be a similar experience, but I don’t think all of the combined flavors and textures went together for him.

Overall it was a very good meal that we all enjoyed and John Henry did an excellent job of taking care of us. We were done around 6:35 and it was time for Alison and I to head out and try to catch the Candlelight Processional, while the boys went off together to worlds unknown since they were yet to decide exactly what they wanted to do next.

Coming Up – Chapter 13 The Candlelight Processional

Delish Review and I got a couple right !!Although The Tiramusu was eaten by you even if not ordered by you sooooo RULES Committee!!:rotfl2:

Hey!!! Where are our pictures of the hunky Italian waiters????

For Rosie of course :rolleyes1

Great update Marv!

I cannot believe your boys made it there on time! :worship:

Having a good server is almost as important as the food... almost. ;)

All of your meals look fantastic! My stomach is currently rumbling! popcorn::

I've read some spoon talk in the last few posts...... Here is what I take pictures of in the grocery store. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Hmmm, I think I got a couple right! Maybe. When are you grading our quizzes professor??;)

Great pics too Marv, the focus on your food pics are particulary good!

That tiramisu looks ahhhmazing! Oh how I love a good one! Soooo, you and Alison finished it then? I'm going to have to side with Rosie then because your question didn't ask who ORDERED, it asked who HAD the tiramisu!

The food looked really good at Tutto and your view was awesome!
253.jpg

If I'd have had that view, I would've stayed there for hours!

Can't wait to see if you got those Candlelight Processional seats!:goodvibes

Great review! There's a lot to comment on, but I am needed for the latest sewing adventure... The ball is coming up!

I figured the tiramisu would get shared if your least adventurous eater ordered it. It's one of those things that looks good to a kid on paper but invariably gets pushed aside if they are at all picky.

A merlot eh? I usualy have problems ordering them myself since they have such a range of fruitiness. I'm sure John had a good choice for Alison.

Arrosto Di Vitello In Prochetta looks like something I would order. Mmmm. Ok, I have to move on before I drool on my keyboard. Look forward to the second part. :thumbsup2

You are welcome Grace :hug:And don't listen to Marv !!!!!:rotfl2:
Hey!!!
Yes and my eyes are very childlike !!!:cloud9:
Eyes? or Mind???? :rotfl2:
This gave me a great :rotfl2: Huge belly laugh with a tiny bit tears.

Great you could squeeze it in to post , I know you are sooo busy.
Yes it is great when we get to hear from good DISfriends, and very sad when life takes them away for a while!!! (Well, most of them anyway......Rosie I'm not so sure.....) :rolleyes1 j/k Rosie!
I would have thought that wooden spoons would have been quite abundant in Germany? :confused3
You know, I looked some but that didn't seem to be the type of thing they focused on in the shops. I guess they can't rely on the occasional Marv trip to keep turning over their inventory..... :confused3
FINALLY home from the hospital and just checking in (wanted to be sure I didn't miss the answers to the contest).
Glad all of your news for the day was better than what everyone feared when you left home to start your stressful day!!! Thoughts and prayers continue your way! :thumbsup2
Well gee whiz,

Now you tease us..... :surfweb: popcorn::
I have many sides..... ;)

Delish Review and I got a couple right !!Although The Tiramusu was eaten by you even if not ordered by you sooooo RULES Committee!!:rotfl2:
Gee, if you had only said that in your guesses BEFORE I revealed the results....... :rolleyes1 As you will see when I post the results of this round, sometimes it is ALL in the way you word your answer! :)
Hey!!! Where are our pictures of the hunky Italian waiters????

For Rosie of course :rolleyes1
:lmao: Sorry, I tried to get John Henry to pose with a goat, but...... :rotfl:

Actually, I don't remember seeing any other waiters that night except John Henry. Everyone else I saw including the two hostesses were female.
Great update Marv! Thanks!

I cannot believe your boys made it there on time! :worship: They were pretty good about it the whole trip, but after hearing the story of where they were and how much time they had, I was a little amazed myself. I built a little slack into the schedule, but as hungry as I was getting, I'm glad they didn't use any of it up! :goodvibes

Having a good server is almost as important as the food... almost. ;) True Dat!

All of your meals look fantastic! My stomach is currently rumbling! popcorn::
Yeah, that was definitely a difficult meal to write about, looking at those pictures and knowing how good it all was. At the end of the trip when I asked the boys about their favorite restaurants this was one of three of them that they struggled to pick a favorite out of. Andrew actually picked this one as his favorite, but he wishes he could have traded his dessert for the one he had at LeCellier....
I've read some spoon talk in the last few posts...... Here is what I take pictures of in the grocery store. :lmao::lmao:
First it's whips, now spoons!!! I'm starting to worry about you Tim!!! :rotfl2:
Hmmm, I think I got a couple right! Maybe. When are you grading our quizzes professor??;) They are already graded but I don't want to spoil the results before I put the other two updates out there. Otherwise you guys won't be able to complain about how you should be given credit for more answers, or be granted more bonus points!!! :sad2:

Great pics too Marv, the focus on your food pics are particulary good! You making fun of that pork chop picture??? :headache: I really hated that one didn't turn out better, but it is certainly no reflection on the quality of the real thing!!!

That tiramisu looks ahhhmazing! Oh how I love a good one! Soooo, you and Alison finished it then? I'm going to have to side with Rosie then because your question didn't ask who ORDERED, it asked who HAD the tiramisu! You're siding with ROSIE!!?? I don't think I would admit THAT to anyone.....:lmao:

The food looked really good at Tutto and your view was awesome!
253.jpg

If I'd have had that view, I would've stayed there for hours!

Can't wait to see if you got those Candlelight Processional seats!:goodvibes
I'm gonna try to have that one out tonight, but I have some meetings and things so no promises......and NO popcorn:: posts! (that means YOU Pat!!! )
Great review! There's a lot to comment on, but I am needed for the latest sewing adventure... The ball is coming up!
You didn't see the "ball" in my last update???
I figured the tiramisu would get shared if your least adventurous eater ordered it. It's one of those things that looks good to a kid on paper but invariably gets pushed aside if they are at all picky. He usually isn't that picky when it comes to dessert, but that wasn't a good choice for him. He isn't overly picky when it comes to food, he just normally orders the standard stuff he feels comfortable with.

Sometimes I think he just takes the easy and quick method instead of looking at more of the menu. When we ate dinner at Boma on a previous trip, he at least sampled a lot of the items, but he still spent more time on the comfort food. Maybe it had something to do with being able to see it first...
:confused3

A merlot eh? I usualy have problems ordering them myself since they have such a range of fruitiness. I'm sure John had a good choice for Alison. She sampled it first and liked it, so she was happy with the choice. Matthew was the same.

Arrosto Di Vitello In Prochetta looks like something I would order. Mmmm. Ok, I have to move on before I drool on my keyboard. Look forward to the second part. :thumbsup2
Hopefully the next two chapters will be out soon.

I am very proud of your boys, I would not have expected anything less than them finishing their mission, being on time, putting a lot of efffort into reaching this goal and then not showing it!! Just like I predicted! :thumbsup2

I guess the ability to run a 5k under 21 minutes did help with that...

Looks like you had a wonderful meal and I knew that those Ravioli looked nice but were too small a portion! ;) Your pork chop sounds very good though, we have a similar dish here in Germany, not with a pork chop but with a pork or veal schnitzel which is filled with ham and cheese and then breaded and fried. Delicious! :cloud9:

I am looking strongly at trying Biergarten for the first time on our upcoming June trip. Have you eaten there? If so, what did you think overall of the authenticity of the food, and in particular what did you think of the schnitzel?

ahh man someone ordered veal.

the food did look good though, im not sure which meal i would have taken, prob your pork chops as the ravioli would have been a good lead for me, but with the portion size, yours looked better.:thumbsup2

and the description you gave was excellent.

(bonus points for sucking up):rolleyes1

I am looking strongly at trying Biergarten for the first time on our upcoming June trip. Have you eaten there? If so, what did you think overall of the authenticity of the food, and in particular what did you think of the schnitzel?

No, I haven't eaten there yet. From the pictures I have seen so farit looks pretty authentic. But recent reports were that the schnitzel was chicken, not pork or veal. That's not very authentic. Traditional chicken dishes would be roast chicken or chicken fricassee, which is pieces of chicken meat in a white sauce.

But I am planning to eat there in October/November in order to do an in depth review of their offerings! :goodvibes I know that might be too late for your trip this year.

Aw Marv, I was being totally genuine when I said your food pics were good!:thumbsup2 It's hard to get the focus just right so my compliment was sincere!

Yup, I'm siding with Rosie, she made an excellent point about the tiramisu!:thumbsup2

Hmmm, so it's all about the wording of our answers? I'll keep that in mind for the next contest. Darn, I've seen some great creative answers from others too. Is there a way to do extra credit?;) How do you feel about bribes??

Great update, the food looks great! I think I failed the quiz though. :guilty:

We always miss our sweet tea at Disney!!!!

The food looked delicious at Tutto Italia. I'm not the biggest fan of Tiramisu either. The taste of liquor that the biscuits are drenched in is just too much for me. I failed the quiz miserably but hopefully will do better on the next round.

We were seated near the entrance to the dining room and were soon greeted by our server John Henry. John Henry was an older man from Italy (seems like he was from Venice but I don't remember for certain) and had the accent to go with it.

He may have had the accent, but his name isn't screaming "Italy" to me. Shouldn't he be "Giovanni" at least? Are you sure he didn't normally work in the American Pavilion?

Alison is the wine aficionado in the family and ordered a glass of the house Merlot to go with her water.

Hmmm. Has she ever seen the movie "Sideways"? Merlot gets a bad rap in that movie.

Jonathan was the first to order and he went with the Penne Tortelli Di Vitello Al Chianti, which is veal and chianti ravioli.

Ooo Ooo, I had "chianti" in one of my answers!

I know I should have but I didn't get a picture of it. I think I tried though. Alison sat to my left and Andrew to my right. I think that day I only had the zoom lens for the camera and trying to take pictures of their food was a difficult undertaking and I finally gave up.

Oh come on! How difficult is it to stand on a chair in order to get far enough away to take a picture with the zoom lens?! Sheesh.

Mocha Tiramisu. Andrew really didn’t like his choice and didn’t eat very much of it. He slid it across the table and Alison and I finished it for him.

Sooo, maybe Alison didn't order it, but she did eat it, huh? Oughtta be worth sumthin'. :scratchin

Andrew likes to get coffee on occasion and thought this would be a similar experience, but I don’t think all of the combined flavors and textures went together for him.

Did he at least learn to never breathe in when taking a bite of tiramisu? That's a good way to launch yourself into a coughing fit, breathing that cocoa dust. (I do it just about every time. )

The taste of liquor that the biscuits are drenched in is just too much for me.

Oh, right! I remember that Segway tour in Canada you went on that turned into a bar crawl.

the food did look good though, im not sure which meal i would have taken, prob your pork chops as the ravioli would have been a good lead for me, but with the portion size, yours looked better.:thumbsup2
The ravioli looked more suited to be an appetizer to me!!! ;)
and the description you gave was excellent.
(bonus points for sucking up):rolleyes1
It WAS excellent, wasn't it! Sorry, bonus points are for creativity, not saying something that is totally and unequivocally correct!
No, I haven't eaten there yet. From the pictures I have seen so farit looks pretty authentic. But recent reports were that the schnitzel was chicken, not pork or veal. That's not very authentic. Oh great, like I can do an adequate German food review that will do YOU any good...... :sad2:
Aw Marv, I was being totally genuine when I said your food pics were good!:thumbsup2 It's hard to get the focus just right so my compliment was sincere!
I know you were, but I was still disappointed that as much as I enjoyed my stuffed pork chop, the picture was out of focus!!! :headache:
Hmmm, so it's all about the wording of our answers? I'll keep that in mind for the next contest. Darn, I've seen some great creative answers from others too. Is there a way to do extra credit?;) How do you feel about bribes??
There's a phrase from college that comes to mind, but I definitely better show some restraint on that one.......
Great update, the food looks great! I think I failed the quiz though. :guilty:

We always miss our sweet tea at Disney!!!!
Don't give up hope yet. Still two more chapters to post before all of the answers are revealed....

Since we will have a kitchen on our June trip again, there will definitely be tea bags, sugar and a tea pitcher in the supply box when we go!!! Maybe I'll take some along to sip on while I'm hanging around those phone booths......;)
The food looked delicious at Tutto Italia. I'm not the biggest fan of Tiramisu either. The taste of liquor that the biscuits are drenched in is just too much for me. I failed the quiz miserably but hopefully will do better on the next round.
As I said above, don't lose hope yet! Still two chapters to go!
He may have had the accent, but his name isn't screaming "Italy" to me. Shouldn't he be "Giovanni" at least? Are you sure he didn't normally work in the American Pavilion?
I didn't think that sounded too Italian either. Then again, with all of those Italian waitresses running around, there was one that looked a lot like Yuki. When I asked John Henry about her he said she married an Italian and was a full citizen. :confused3 I gave up on trying to be funny after that.....even his explanations were professional!!!
Ooo Ooo, I had "chianti" in one of my answers!
YES you did!......and NO, you're not!!! :rotfl:
Oh come on! How difficult is it to stand on a chair in order to get far enough away to take a picture with the zoom lens?! Sheesh.
I tried standing on top of Alison's but she was too unstable. I was going to blame that on the Merlot, but can we really be so sure???
Sooo, maybe Alison didn't order it, but she did eat it, huh? Oughtta be worth sumthin'. :scratchin
YES she did, and NO, you're not!!! :headache:
Did he at least learn to never breathe in when taking a bite of tiramisu? That's a good way to launch yourself into a coughing fit, breathing that cocoa dust. (I do it just about every time. )
Why am I not surprised??? And you said you didn't inhale!!! :sad2:
Oh, right! I remember that Segway tour in Canada you went on that turned into a bar crawl.
Can't wait to hear THIS explanation........ popcorn::
