Snow day during your Vacation - Office Issue - What do you think?

I know this is a zombie thread but.....

at my job we have PTO banks. They are used for sick, holiday, vacation, personal. Everything out of that one bank. We are a hospital so if you work a holiday you are paid time and a half but you don't use PTO. If they paid non essential employees that don't work for holidays they would then have to pay essential holiday employees double time and a half.

If you can't make it due to snow they do not pay you. If you are non essential you are excused if you call out BUT they would prefer you come in.

Anyway whether I'm off for a snow day or vacation it comes out of the same bank so no issues.
 
Must be a Florida thread with all this talk about snow days at work, LOL. In western PA, if it snows, you go to work. 1 foot, 2 foot, red foot, blue foot of snow, you go to work.

Us too! No snow days here!

Last summer there was one day where the power went out where I work. Sent home mid morning. We got paid. Coworker was on vacation. She got vacation pay.
 
Our policy is if you are scheduled to take paid time off and the office closes I expectedly, you are still expected to use vacation time for the scheduled day off. Sounds like you've been more than generous and flexible with this woman.
 

I understand it is completely up to the company, as long as I get paid for the work I did I cannot really complain... I suppose the company can pay as many people as they want for NOT working.. However....... I told them straight up that my threshold for calling in sick just lowered enormously.. my company does not have clearly defined amount of 'sick days'.. people get what they need, but I've heard if it's more than 2weeks in the year they have a little meeting with you.. so my current average of 0.5 sick days per year will now increase to 10.. I called in sick the Monday & Tuesday after they informed of their decision to pay everyone else out snow days.. .. fuk dat.. The single healthy guys with no kids already get ****ed over with the whole benefits package anyway.. I'm getting sicker and sicker the more I type.. *cough

This a)says a lot about your work ethic
And b) it swings and round abouts 1 day you are the single healthy guy with no kids and "not getting anything" another you aren't so healthy anymore, or your partner/kids isn't and then you are. Sometimes you give, sometimes you take that's just how the world works

One place I worked the sick days were unofficial even though the standard PTO theoretically covered all absences. My boss said not to worry about it.

I later worked for a company that theoretically had combined PTO for everything, but later we got 5 days of non-accruable sick time per calendar year. Once I went on vacation and had one day where I got sick and ended up in bed all day. When I got back I sort of half jokingly mentioned that to our HR director. She said (totally serious) that I could actually use the sick day for that and they could credit back the PTO hours.
