I have done the snorkeling at the family beach but was wondering about snorkeling on serenity beach. I know that it is not netted and bigger things could be out there. How far do you have to go out to see anything and is it worth it?

I went snorkeling in Serenity Bay during our 4/25 cruise! It was wonderful! Check out the Castaway Cay day in my trip report (link in my signature). There are photos as well.

It's definitely different than the family snorkel area....there are a lot more star fish. Recently, (April, 2009) DCL has put some "fish attractors" out there too, so there are more fish than in previous years. The major difference is that there are no life guard stations out in the water....this doesn't mean that CMs aren't watching you from the beach--they are!

Last time (early Jan 09 ) I snorkeled in SB I followed a baby (2'wide) stingray around most of the time. There were alot of other fish and starfish also. No "hidden" stuff however, at least that I saw.

Have fun

Just last week DH and I did both the family beach snorkel and serenity bay and both experiences were totally different. The family beach of course had all the hidden surprises, huge schools of fish, and we say a small stingray (granted we were one of the first people into the lagoon that morning). You can snorkel really far out in serenity bay. We did see near as many fish but saw alot of starfish, hermit crabs, live conchs, sea urchins, and a baracuda!!! I must say his long pointy nose freaked me out a little.

What do you mean no hidden stuff in Serenity Bay? Dh found a Casio watch!!

Here are some photos and video from Castaway Cay last Friday May 22nd.

They didn't have any hidden Mickey statues or anything like that at Serenity Bay. I did see some stuff that looked like huge links of chain (I think it was supposed to look like a ship wreck). Our April visit was the first time I'd seen anything like this at Serenity Bay. The fish are attracted to the "hiding places."

I haven't been in 3 years, but I remember that there were some old sunken what looked like engines or other types of machinery parts. There were a lot of fish hanging out around there.

We will be snorkeling on Castaway Cay in 12 days. I've already got my new snorkel gear packed. I can give a better update then :goodvibes.

We were on the DCL western last week :cloud9:. If you have aqua socks, you should wear them at Serenity Bay. My feet are still cut up from the very rocky bottom .

does everyone just bring their snorkelling stuff over from the family beach?

Yup! I actually brought my own gear but yes, you can get rent gear from the family beach and bring it to Serenity Bay.

I could recommend using fins if you plan to snorkel far out enough to see all the fish. I wore water shoes and I was exhausted. I think fins would have made the swimming a lot easier.

We love snorkeling at Serenity Bay. I think it is an old airplane engine that is out there. Lots of fish. Depends on the time of year but when we went last April we were able to walk out to where all the fish were. In fact you could walk out all the way to the bouy.

That is good to know. I'll be careful but nice to know someone may see me out there.

I actually read it before posting question. Awesome pics. :thumbsup2Thank you.

Hey tigger2002 (Tim, right?), your photos look just like our snorkeling trip that day! It was great to meet you on boarding (two weeks ago today, wasn't it?), and I am sorry we didn't get a chance to talk with you again during the cruise.
