SNAKES - Gulp - I gotta ask..........

I'm also completely terrified of snakes, stumbled upon one too many poisionous snakes, not at WDW, but my hometown in Tennessee :scared1: . I cannot stand to see them on tv, in photos, and absolutely cannot stand any of the fake toy ones. :earseek:

I've never really recovered from when DS (then about 5) put his rubber snake in my drawer with my undies :scared1: I cannot stand snakes, but have only seen one while at WDW and I went the other way!!! It was at the AKL bus stop. Don't sit on the benches...stand closer to the road. The bugs are bad back there anyway.

When I was little, my sisters bought a rubber snake, and the three of them spent years tormenting me with it. They thought it was hilarious, but I've never gotten over it. I'm thinking of getting therapy and sending them the bills. :rotfl: I am terrified of real ones, and still have heart palpitations when I see kids with fake ones. The kids of our daycare provider thought it would be really funny to scare me one day 'cause my DD told them I was really afraid. They had no idea just HOW afraid I was, until they saw me screaming and crying in their driveway. Their mother was so apologetic, and so were they the next day. I told my kids that if they ever did that to me, they would still be suffering punishment when they move out of the house to go to university ... and I was serious!

I've been to WDW 23 times and have never seen one. I do watch the walkways at the resorts at night, especially if there is lots of vegetation on both sides. Now someone did say they have problems at River Country with them, which is maybe why we haven't gone there.

I have seen many snakes at WDW. Mostly at POFQ last April - we caught one to have a look at it. I knew it was a non venomous species. Unless you know where to look and what to look for you probably wont see one. They live in the leaves and shrubs in the resorts usully near the food courts where the mice and rats hang out, as that is what they eat. I have never seen a venomous snake at WDW, but once heard a water moccasin was found at Tom Sawyers Island.

I absolutely hate snakes!!! I have seen 4 snakes at WDW. Snake #1 - I was in the lazy river at BB and so was a snake. It floated/swam right past me. It was just looking for a way out but still. I stayed out of that stupid lazy river the rest of the day. Snake #2 - BB on the steps going up to the water slides. Snake #3 - CS in the pool. Snake #4 - AK.. I was sitting waiting for my dh and I look down and there it was. I FREAKED out.

I have a huge fear of snakes but I don't let it ruin my vacation. Actually, I forget about them until I see one. Don't let it ruin your trip. I do close my eyes in the snake section of Honey I shrunk the audience. :)

I have never seen an alligator but we did see an armidillo (sp). That thing was freaky looking.

I'm wondering how the OP will handle the "Serpent" themed slide at POFQ's pool?

The OP would never make it on DLR's "Indiana Jones" attraction as it has a huge snake that jumps out at you during the ride.

Count me among the people here who have a snake phobia.

I'm a grown man. I have sky dived, bungie jumped, ridden a bucking bull, you name it...

But when it comes to snakes....I have the same reaction as other here....I can't stand to watch one on TV, if I am driving in a truck and see one on the road, I roll up the windows. I was mowing my yard last summer. I was sitting atop a 23 horsepower John Deere riding lawn mower. I saw a snake. I stopped mowing. It was at least an hour before I could go back outside.

I have had nightmares involving snakes since I was a kid. I was born and spend most of my childhood in Okeechobee, FL. I recall having a close encounter with a snake when I was little. That must be where my fear comes from.

I have goosebumps thinking about them.

Yet, when I am at Disney, I don't think about snakes.

Rats and mice near the food courts!?!?! IIEWWWWW...

As for snakes.. I have never seen one. Just the little lizards (they are cute).

I say this more to reassure you than to scare you, but they are all over the place in WDW. If you're observant, you're likely to see them, but generally snakes don't want to encounter us anymore than we want to encounter them, so they make a quick exit when they become aware of people. We've seen quite a few in and around the Bay Lake area over the years.

We love snakes and my kids would be thrilled to see one, but in all my years of going to WDW I have only seen one, a harmless black snake, on the path to the laundry in Ft. Wilderness. They are shy creatures and will go like mad to get away from you. Don't worry about being accosted by one!

Now Palmetto Bugs are another story. They are NASTY and I don't care what Floridians call them, they are roaches! EEEEEW. I have seen a few at WDW, mostly at night when they were buzzing around lights. One time we had been in a long line and I really wanted to FLEE the line because we had to pass where the bugs were... I guess we all have our unique critter phobias!

Well, in answer to your question, up until last year I had (LUCKILY) never seen a snake. However, on our visit last year I did see one at AK when I was walking off the Dinosaur ride. It was probably about 3 to 4 feet long and all black. I made a HUGE scene and even made a little girl cry. Boy, did I feel horrible.
Angie, don't feel bad. I have to admit I made a huge scene also. I posted this a while back. I don't know that I made anyone cry...other than my dh with tears of laughter.

"A few years go we were staying at the Wilderness Lodge. Our children were 7, 4, and almost 2 at the time. We brought the stroller on our way to our p.s. for CRT , ds was ready to walk now but we knew he'd need it later. I had the stroller and was walking merrily out the back door to the boat dock a few feet ahead of the rest - wanted to make the ferry on time you know! I'm walking and my dh yells my name and says SNAKE! Now this word in itself frightens me to death. I can't watch Animal Planet when the snakes are on. I look down and there is a greenish black, and who the heck knows what other color ('cause I wasn't staying to find out) SNAKE next to the sidewalk, COILED UP AND LOOKING AT ME I SWEAR (I think he was about to cross the sidewalk and was ticked at me) and it happened. I always knew if I came face to face I would freak out and I did. I saw it and a bunch of expletives that I can not repeat and never say (at least in public ;-) came flying out of my mouth as I RAN with the stroller and ran until I reached the boat dock. I stopped, took a breath and remembered I left my family to deal with the snake! They said I scared it when I screamed (along with the people on the other side of the pool who just saw a woman running with a stroller cussing) and it went under a bush and they walked around it. I was so embarassed that I went around the resort with sunglasses on so nobody would recognize the crazy stroller woman. I hate snakes so much it ruined my appetite and that really made me mad since those p.s. are hard to get! :teeth: "

I am a fellow snake hater - though I am sort of drawn to them at the zoo and stuff - I don't mind looking at them in an aquarium or whatevr, bu tI really don't like thinking about them in WDW - I will stay on pavement! We vacation in Georgian Bay in Ontario and are always on a snake lookout there - Flashlights ta dusk, etc. I never really thought about it in WDW. I will be very careful!

Hi All,
Thanks for the input. I guess forewarned is forearmed!

But..................

Just in case I do have a snake encounter..........which is the best bar to drink in?

Pauline

We camped in Fort Wilderness 2 or 3 times in the 70's. I recall that they took "snake sightings" very seriously (although we never saw one, darn it).

My DS loves rubber snakes. He used to wait for me to fall asleep and get them out of his toy box and lay them all over me. I would wake up covered with snakes. He thought this was great fun. :rotfl:
I've never seen one at WDW, though. Just an alligator in the lake with the raft to Tom Sawyer Island, and lots of little lizards sunning themselves. I can handle alligators and lizards, just not snakes! :scared1:

The one that makes you forget what you had just encountered!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'd take a snake any day over those big honkin' "palmetto" bugs (cockroaches)! Gross!
