Smugmug

This post reminded me of my aborted smugmug project ;) Just before the holiday, I was trying to organize DS10's basketball pictures. I was able to create a basketball category then sub category for each week's game. The one thing I couldn't figure out is how to share the category (basketball)?? Seems like I can only share each sub-category(week). The albums are unlisted and I would like to provide a link to the basketball category instead of a link for each week. Does anyone know how to do this?

I started to explain this but I think I'll leave it to the heroes at smugmug. I think this might help......

I think SueinBoston is basically asking the same question as me. I understand creating share groups, but when I go to my Homepage or Visitor View, I don't see galleries that are sorted by share group, I just see individual galleries.

Using the example listed in your link on the SmugMug help page-here it goes.

My team dye their hair green to celebrate. I create two galleries, one titled "before" and one titled "after." The share group I create is "My Softball Team." I would like it set up so that when you click on the link in the signature for my SmugMug, you see a thumbnail view that says "My Softball Team" whereas right now, you will still see one for "Before" and one for "After" with a listing of share groups at the top. If you click on the "My Softball Team" share group, it will ultimately link you to both of these galleries, but only when you click on the share group link...not when you first enter my Homepage.

Does that make sense?? :confused3

I'm at the point where I'm going to delete all of my pictures and re-upload them. It will be a lengthy process, and I honestly am not an idiot when it comes to computer usage...but I just CAN'T figure this out.

I want mine to be set up like Kyle's (handicap). When you click to his, there is a gallery called "Baseball" then there are sub-galleries called (and I'm paraphrasing) "MLB" "DS' Tee Ball" "Minor League"...to go even further, if you click into one of THOSE galleries (like MLB) you can find more sub-galleries sorted by date, team, whatever.

Homepage--->Baseball Gallery--->Minor League
------------------------------->Tee ball
------------------------------->MLB --->Regular Season--->April 08
---------------------------------------->Play-offs

Anne, before you reload everything, i would suggest to dig a little deeper. When I was doing the basketball pictures, it took me hours to figure out the category and subcategories and move all the existing pictues to each of the sub categories. So I know it can be done! I wish I can explain it to you but unfortunately, I don't know what steps I took, I know I created galleries, deleted galleries, moved pictures around and finally got everything into the right categories. And by that time, I gave up on researching share group.

As for the view, there's a little selection to view on the upper right corner,did you select gallery? Took me a while to find that too :rotfl:

Smugmug is down now so I can't get you the exact wording on that selection.

Ann, it took me a little while to figure out how to get it done. I've deleted a few galleries in the beginning because I had done it wrong....

For your specific Softball issue here is what I would do.... first, grrrrrrr.... ok smugmug is having internal issues right now so I'll try this on the blind side.....

Go to add new gallery. Before you add any pictures you want to create this gallery in a category... In your case "My Softball Team" (you can create your own category name by going to the bottom of the list, or you can use one of the pre-named smugmug ones). Above that there is a place to create the name of the gallery name next to Title. Then you can click on create gallery and add the photos. To make the "After" gallery, you also have to choose the "My Softball Team" category.

Now, if you'd like you can put the Before and After galleries in another "Sub-Caterogry" within the "My Softball Team" Category. If you already have the gallery title made and have images loaded, like others have said, you can move this gallery by going under the Customize Gallery tab within the gallery itself (Its listed above the big photo on the right).

If your still stuck, PM or email me. I should be around tomorrow and can probably give some more specific help while we're both online.

Another thing I noticed, but can't confirm until smugmug gets back up.... you also might want to look at how your front page is set up. I notice that you do have some categories already set up, but that is not is what is showing on your front page.

If you look at mine, I have it to display Gallery Categories. Your is just Galleries. IIRC there is a place under Control Panel to set this. You'll want to have your Gallery Categories show not just Galleries.

I also had problems learning the structure. It is much easier to build categories and galleries with the send to smugmug program. Freeware supported by smugmug.

Plus it is great for batch uploads.

Watching this thread with interest, my smugmug needs to be organized badly. I keep clicking on Kyle's links to see what Anne is talking about but am only seeing Photo Bucket albums?

What do you guys use to upload to smugmug? Whenever I use Flock as my browser it crashes it so I end up using IE to drag and drop and it flippin' takes forever.

I probably should fix my signature. Wen you can see my smugmug site at www.kylegendron.com

For uploading to smugmug I use IE and the uploaded at smugmug. With firefox I found that if I upload more than 1 image it crashes. SO I just go over to IE and do it.

Ann, to view your Category Galleries: on your front page you will see on the same line as Galleries it will say Organize (on the right side). Under that it says display: you want to click on categories. This will show all your Categories on your main page rather than just only your galleries. I think this might help alot in getting what your are looking for. Once you have that then you can figure out if you need to add more categories and/or subcategories.

Thanks Kyle! Your New England pics are awesome!
Definitely like the structure you have going for your galleries.:thumbsup2

This is EXACTLY what I meant. I sort of set up the other stuff with the sub groups and all (at least I started to) but I still kept seeing a "Gallery View" on my homepage, rather than the "Category View" or whatever. If this fixes it (which I believe it will)---that was so simple, and I am a moron. :rotfl:

This is my other smugmug project, figuring out a way to upload :confused3
I have PSE6 and when I try to upload to smugmug, it crashes after 3 pictures. So now I resort to exporting the pictures from PSE6 into a folder on my desktop and then using smugmug upload tool. But I really want to avoid that extra step of exporting.

Have you tried the "send to smugmug" program.
Right click on any file (or an entire folder) and send it. You get all the options to set up new pages if you want or add to existing pages. Great software and it is free.

Why not download with smugmug directly from the same folder you use for PSE? Why are you putting them in a 2nd folder? The pictures are in a folder on your computer, just find that folder. It doesn't matter if PSE is also using it or not.

Are you doing it the way that SmugMug instructs you to when using the "SmugMug" option on PE6??

PE6--->Organize--->Highlight Thumbnails of Photos To Upload--->Share--->More Options--->Send to SmugMug Gallery

From here you should be able to create a new album, pick an old album or whatever. Mine crashes sometimes, after maybe 5 photos it says something about unable to connect to the internet and then I have the option to re-try, cancel, etc. If you press continue or re-try, it will continue uploading from the point the error occurred, it doesn't always go back to step 1.

Good luck!

Those are the steps I followed exactly and I get the same message about unable to connect to the internet. I press continue and it would go another 4-5 pictures and stops again so I end up having to babysit the upload process. I've checked my interenet connection and that is not the problem. There's also no problem when I use other batch upload program so I'm thinking it's PSE6. :mad:

:rotfl:

That's my EXACT SAME problem. It never happened when I did a batch upload on SmugMug directly (although it would freeze mid-photo every once in a while). I always thought it was my internet (I use wireless on my laptop) but who knows...maybe not. Maybe it is the program.

Just want to clarify, I'm having trouble with the 'upload to Smugmug tool' in PSE6 not the 'upload tool' in Smugmug.

Why not download with smugmug directly from the same folder you use for PSE? Why are you putting them in a 2nd folder? The pictures are in a folder on your computer, just find that folder. It doesn't matter if PSE is also using it or not.

That's because I don't upload all the pictures in my PSE folder. I typically create an album of pictures that I want to upload and share. I should be able to use the PSE6 'upload to Smugmug tool'. But it seems like that tool crashes after 3-4 pictures, so I end up exporting those pictures in the album (random pictures in my PSE folder) then using the smugmug tool (one from smugmug, not PSE6)

Mikeee,
Thanks, I 've read very good things about this program, but my problem is that I rely on PSE6 to tag the pictures I want to upload and share. Without PSE6, I wouldn't know which photos I want to upload (i could rename the photos, but that just seems too labor intensive ;)

I love your site!! Your Favorites gallery is amazing, I love the lighthouse pictures, great job. I also like the organization of your page- I started using the site a few months ago and once I finished uploading from the holidays I already have 30 galleries and haven't finished putting up pictures from Disney, etc. I just used the above instructions to set up my page similar to yours and I love it! So much easier to look through when you have a ton of galleries. Although under "Featured" I have the four most recent (this will change to the 3 most recent, along with a "My Favorites" gallery once I put one together).

Thanks!
