Smugmug

I get the feeling that the board moderators (or some other powers that be) have the power to turn on/off html code for each forum as they see fit. Imagine the bandwidth that would get used if those slideshows became popular here on the photography board (then again, that may not be a big dea, I'm not really a techie). I browsed around a bit and some were on and some were off. In the Seaworld post where it worked, the code looked like this(see below), but doesn't appear to work on this forum. Too bad, it looked really cool and seemed like something that would be very useful here.

yes, you should see the bandwidth used on just my signature pics!

Thanks guys for looking into it for me. :)
I agree it must have something to do with HTML (whatever that is :rotfl:)

Gotta admit it is a tasty way to show off your photos. It would mean those who dont like clicking on links to external sites like Smugmug would see ALL of a galery right here on the Dis. There is another method where small thumbnails of your gallery are displayed like a grid then each one displays as 800x600 or whatever size you chose. Very cool indeed. :thumbsup2

So I am trying to set up my new smugmug website, but I have a question regarding the galleries/folders. Can you have an album within an album? :confused3 For instance, I'm trying to upload pictures from my Disney 2007 trip but there is over 900 pictures. Can I set up a sub-folder like Magic Kingdom 2007, DCL 2007, Epcot 2007, etc. Thanks!

I think you would want to use categories and sub-categories to accomplish that. Then set your main page to display categories instead of albums.

Thanks! Can you add subcategories AFTER you've already got a gallery of pictures? In case it helps to see, HERE is my website as of now. I know it's basic and bare, but I just started it yesterday afternoon.

Yes. I started with just a Disney category and put all of our Disneyland trips under that heading. When I wanted to upload our cruise pictures I then decided to add subcategories. Will add WDW in a few weeks. See here

I have a Disney World Category then within that there are 4 other sub categories, 2006 trip, 2007 trip, 2009 trip and With Characters. Under each of the year trips I have a different gallery for each day of that trip.

If you've already started, best way to change things is to make your new sub-category, then make a gallery within that sub-category. You can then move stuff from one gallery to the new gallery.

So from my home page I have Gallery Categories (this includes, Disney World, Other, The Kids, Animals, Baseball, etc....)

Under the Disney World Category are Disney World Sub-Categories, then the Trip Galleries, then the actual gallery....

So the top looks like: Kyle Gendron > Disney World > 2006 Trip > Day 1

Check it out here.

I have a theater category
then a sub-category for this years show (an others for previous years)
then galleries for each night of performance

I highly recommend Omar's "send to smugmug" program. it is very easy to use and uploads rarely fail. it is the easiest way to send large quantities of photos.

and I think it is still free. But it is sooooo nice I donated a little to his cause.

That's GREAT everyone! Thanks!! :worship: Kyle, I do have one follow-up question for you; how did you get your website to just be your name? I thought all smugmug accounts had to be www.yourname.smugmug.com? :confused3

you need to register a domain name with a registry. Mine is www.mnmstudios.com then you forward all traffic that going there to your smug account. then they mask it so it does not show the www.yourname.smugmug.com. it only shows your url.

go daddy has a great deal with smugmug, or did when I signed up. domain name registry plus forwarding to your site, an email account etc... all for about $10 a year.

register dot com was charging me something like $30 for registry and another $50 for forwarding!!!! when I told them I was leaving they offered a lower rate. too late, treat your current customers right or loses them...

you have to go to a special godaddysmugmug page.

Yeah, what Mike said... I think when I got mine it was $7.95/year. I just missed out on a $5.95/year deal. Its all right in smugmug. Go to your Control Panel then Settings. About 8 rows down it says Domain:.... there should be a link there for you to click on to set it up. Right now they have the $7.95/year deal through godaddy.

I currently have a Power User level Smugmug account. I was just emailed by someone who told me they ordered some prints off my site. So does this mean that smugmug is making a profit off my photos and I don't see any piece of the sale :confused3

I knew there was a buy button but never paid much attention to it because I set the account up mainly to share photos with family and friends with some sense of security

If someone purchases an image from one of your galleries, you should indeed get an email from smugmug stating so. It will start with something like, "Who loves you baby......" For kicks, you might want to check your junk/spam email folder although mine never go there. Smugmug does get a piece of the pie but you have the ability to set the pricing however you choose with a pro level account. If you can confirm with the person that they did in fact make a purchase, I would email help@smugmug.com to find out further.

Danny....thanks for the help. I'll contact the buyer and go from there. I'd assume Smugmug would get a piece because they are doing the actual print service so I'm good with that.

If you don't want people to be able to order then you can also turn off the ability to order.

Or you set the prices in your gallery and make your own profit- the default setting for a pro account is just selling pictures for the processing cost.

Yep...after doing some research I saw that I can do that. I'll look into that for my family galleries which are password protected anyway.

Right now I have the Power user account which is the mid level account. I'm not sure if you can set a price with that level or you need the pro level for price adjustments. I'll need to research that for my renewal.

Thanks all for the info!!

I also have the mid level account and with that account you cannot set your own prices. You would need to upgrade to the pro account for that.

Is anyone else having problem getting on Smugmug? I can go on any sites this morning except for Smugmug :confused3. Wanting to find out if it is my computer problem or a problem with the site. Any help??!!?? I have LOTS of pictures to upload and I was hoping to start them before I left this morning!!
TIA
Ellen
