Smokers tend to be less educated and from a lower socio-economic class.

So why would I want to date someone like that?

Better a smoker than a snob. :rolleyes1 BTW, I know several PhD's that smoke and several of our most wealthy citizens that smoke. I wouldn't be so quick to judge others.

As for the question, I cannot control what my dh does nor do I try. What I can control is what he does when he is with me. If he wants to smoke, that is his business but he doesnt' smoke in the house or in the car. I want him to respect me and my wishes; but I know that I should respect his too.

To say, "I won't be friends with someone who smokes" is really being awfully rigid. You could be missing out on the best friend you could have. Being a smoker has nothing to do with someone's personality. You can be friends with someone without being around everything they do. I am a former smoker and have many friends that still smoke, they just don't smoke around me. I certainly don't go around sniffing people to see if I smell smoke to determine if I am going to be friends with them or not.

I guess it depends on what you mean by putting your foot down. I wouldn't allow anyone to smoke in my home, car, etc, but I wouldn't automatically end a relationship because of it. However, dip is just plain nasty to me and I don't think I could stomach being around someone who was constantly spitting. Ewww. It makes me queasy just thinking about it.

So my husband is in a lower class than you? OK maybe so, but pretty much the entire East coast fleet of the Navy needs my husband. So I'll take his smoking lower class self over you any day.

You can't control what someone else does; you can only control your response. Sure, you can put your foot down, but be aware of all the possible outcomes.

JMO, but "it depends how good-looking they are" is just too shallow to even consider ;)

For the record...I just put that choice in there to make it light hearted... I didn't honestly think someone WOULD be serious about that... at least I hope not!

And, as far as your first statement. I tend to agree.. .I'd like that control, but wouldnt' we all?

Gosh - I hope you don't have any children who grow up to be smokers.. I know some may respond with "my kids will never smoke" - but if you are honest with yourself, you will realize that it's impossible to take that stand because it's still an unknown.. My DD swore up and down she would NEVER, EVER smoke.. Something very traumatic happened in her life 6 years ago and she started smoking.. Although she has since quit, "never" had always been a big word in her vocabulary..

Really? One of my former doctors smoked; I worked for a doctor who smoked; my attorney was a former smoker; my SIL came from a very well to do family, graduated from college with a degree in engineering (was exempt from all of his final exams due to his grades) and was a smoker up until 4 months ago.. I could go on and on - but I think you can see the flaw in making such a sweeping generalization..:goodvibes

My son-in-law was a smoker when my DD met him (she was not).. She didn't like it, but every other aspect of his personality - from his intelligence to his work ethics to his unconditional love for everyone around him - far outweighed the fact that he smoked outside and never in her presence.. She knew that when he was ready to quit, he would - and he did..

To judge the totality of a person based on whether or not they smoke is equivalent to judging a person by the color of their skin.. Some of the kindest people I have known have been smokers and some of the cruelest people I have known have been non-smokers.. Regardless of how one feels about smoking, I think it's unreasonable to judge a persons entire "worth" based on just one aspect of their life.. I can understand not wanting to be around a person while they are smoking - or not being in a smoking atmosphere - but to assume that a person is poor, uneducated, and unworthy based on nothing more than smoking is just mind boggling to me.. :confused3

I have very, very strong feelings about alcohol consumption - regardless of the amount consumed - but would never make such statements as those made here - cut a person out of my life, or worse yet, not even get to know them - just because they have a beer or a glass of wine in their hand..
Wow!!

WOW .... nice

I'm one of those people that will never be good enough for you. bummer

Don't feel too bad - you're in good company.. Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis was a smoker too - and we all know how "poor" and "uneducated" she was..;)

:rotfl2: and we're off! Great googly moogly.......

and for what it's worth, I don't date anyone who smokes, mainly because I'm allergic to it and my eyes swell shut. Dates kinda lose their fun factor after that. But I would never assume they were less educated or form a lower socio-economic class.

Hey, doesn't our President smoke?? Don't think he's stupid or classless at all.
